True Detective (HBO)

Really? If anything, this last episode was the most exciting of them all.

Ani and Ray are in serious trouble - they have always gone along figuring that they can get on top of anything that comes their way, but now that things are coming to a head, things are beyond their control. Within hours of their stealing the documents, Ani and Ray have been completely marginalised and Paul compromised by blackmail. They have nowhere to turn, no allies to rely on, and enemies on all sides. Just surviving the next episode will be difficult enough, let alone bringing everyone down.

Eh, I hate calling it "gritty". To me, that's just an attempt to make a story hard-hitting by stripping all of the joy out of it, like Ridley Scott's Robin Hood.

Okay, the ending was downbeat, but this was pure noir. The overwhelming theme was fighting your demons. Ray had to make peace with Chad and accept that he would die and be remembered as a cop killer and a killer cop, while Frank was tormented by all of the evil in his life in order to see Jordan again. All of this was an extension of the main theme of the season: humam corruption and greed. In the end, they got Osip and McCandless, while Chessani Snr. and Holloway got their own, but Chessani Jnr., Geldof and Burris lived on. Knock one down and another pops up. In the end, you can only fight it for as long as you can.

Presumably the new child was Ani's by Ray.

Also, Ani has turned the evidence amassed over to the 4th estate. So one may hope for justice in the future.

Yeah, it's Ray's child. Which was odd, considering that Frank and Jordan had been trying whilst Ray and Ani had no sexual chemistry until the very end. But then I suppose that the idea was that Ray had become a better man.

As for Ani handing the evidence over, I doubt much would come of it. Say they took down Tony Chessani and Burris - someone would simply fill the void, they way they filled the voids left by Chessani Snr. and Holloway.

Great News!

It's been more than two years since audiences last saw Matthew McConaughey star alongside Woody Harrelson in gritty television drama True Detective, and they have since seen new cast members Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn adopt lead roles in the original pair's place. But turns out, the Oscar-winning actor misses his character from the show just as much as followers of the show do.
