Trueno Drift

No, I turned off public access and made it competition-only. Unfortunately, when I did so, all the videos got deleted (including some of my own)... If you have something though and nowhere to host it, e-mail it to me and I will host it for you.

MR2's look like lots of fun! I followed one down some mountain road in Oregon and had all four tires squeeling just keeping up with him, and he was following someone else so he probably wasn't even pushing his limits (shouts Randy if you read this, you're fast!). It was track prepped though, so he had a little bit of an advantage =) Anyway, Nissans look like lots of fun too, I'm still deciding between a 240 or another 86 as my next car. I'm waiting until my friend up in Tacoma gets her 240 because I want to drive it around and see how it is, then decide. I could just test drive one but hers has an SR20DET and other goodies so it will give me a better idea of what the car can do. I really love those SR20's but I also love the balance of the 86, so if the 240 doesn't have the same balance and response as the 86 I will probably just get another 86.

Actually that's the same plan I have for my 86. =) I know that most people associate the 4A-GE with the various gaps in the powerband that it has, but if you use the right combination of bottom-end and top-end, you can eliminate the gaps completely and actually end up with a fairly nice steady powerband. Most of the gaps are attributed to the TVIS being combined with a high-comp redtop or 20V. Personally, I just love turbos and promised myself I'd never be without one again.

I been driving in GT series since the first one came out since I was 10. The first I ever heard of the word drift was that mysterious question of what kinda settings you wanted in an arcade race, lol. Then about a year ago a friend introduce me to Initial D, and I was like "well thats great! whats the real thing look like?" so I started kinda getting into real drifting a bit, not to mention I naturally fell in love with the AE86 (dont believe me? I bought one!).

I decided to give it a try a few days ago when I came across this site and found some decent settings. I used the settings I found as a basis to create my own. Here's a short vid (its only like 13 seconds cuz of the time limit on my digital camera). Its not really the best I can do, just something I did with the cam cuz I was bored, but I thought I'd post it up to see what you guys think. I'm sure this is total newb stuff to most of u. I've been trying to focus on using the natural inertia of the car to keep it sideways around the track without having to use the brake. You'll see I actually messed up in this vid when entering the 3rd corner, I allowed the car to re-gain grip and had to use the brakes and gass to break it free again, I usually dont do that on this series of corners, its usually all inertia-based. O well, win some u lose some.

Soooo, comments, suggestions, tips, do's donts etc? This was all done on an analog controller. my wheel doesnt come for another 2 weeks I'm afraid.

86 huh
good drift and welcome to gtp

Um, bro, the 4A-GZE is a supercharged engine that ran in the AE101 Corolla's and AW111 MR2's. Turbo'd 4A-G series engines are 4A-GE's with custom turbo internals that people have spent alot of time and money getting to run with a turbo. They kick code for them is 4A-GTE, but the 4A-GZE's will always be supercharged.... just thought I'd let ya know, lol.

You wouldn't want to turbocharge a 4A-GE, they are too high compression. The most common way to turbo a 4A-G is to get a GZE and replace the supercharger with a turbo. It's much easier since you don't even have to modify the top or bottom, it's mostly pipe work.

I think Perg is smokin somtn. You got a pipe of hashish goin over there or somtn? Of course just about anything beats the 4A-C I got in my little pos SR5, muahahaha. lol. At least its nice and clean :) blacked out, muahaha. Pretty much mint inside and out :)

What makes you say that? Where have you heard otherwise?

BTW nice ride, looks like it's in great shape! Converting it to a GT-S? I've got an '85 GT-S and I love it! It's kind of a pain to do the conversion though.. but it works. One of the local guys did it and it turned out nicely. As long as you use an SR-5 body it is exactly the same as the GT-S, unlike the JDM AE85 which did actually have a weaker shell.

I used to have an 87 SR5.....it was alright for the time being...a nice A to B car.....never got much drifting out of it...although I didn't wanna shell out the cash for any swaps.

yah, I am converting it to a GTS, but I am focusing on the suspension first. I'm getting EPSILIR springs, Kociko adjustable shocks, cusco strut bars and TRD Bushings all around for starts sometime next month. Once I get the suspension the way I want it, I'll focus on the drive train. I still need camber plates and what not after that. I really wanna get some TRD coilovers eventually, but those are hecka $$$$ that I probably wont have.

When it comes to the engine, I am going to rebuild it with lightweight racing parts and I have a friend who builds custom turbo's that's already working on a 4A-GE custom turbo kit. Him and his friends are pretty much the best around here. Its going to be interesting to see what the HP outcome is :) I was originally going to just leave it N/A and just rebuild it with lightweight cam gears, cams, springs, etc, but I really wanted to see how far I could push the engine with the turbo (which is gonna run me about $1,500 :-/)

Here's a shot of the interior.

Sweet, that ought to be a nice ride! Not that I'm trying to advertise here, but have you checked out Techno Toy Tuning? If you're looking to spend the money that dude makes the best stuff out there.
http://www.technotoytuning.com/
The way to do it though is don't buy intermediate stuff. Like don't buy the spring and shocks if you're going to buy coilovers later. Do you know what turbo your friend is going to use in the kit? There's a guy on Club4AG putting a T04 50-trim (with T3 turbine) on his GZE and he's expecting 25psi with a redline of 9500RPM, so it'll be interesting to see how yours turns out compared to his, with yours being the higher compression, lower boost I assume?

to be honest, I am quite new to advanced tuning, so I pretty much dont know shyte about turbo. I know some advanced stuff, like how engines work (EXACTLY), why lighter/more responsive internals give your more hp, etc, but I havent even tried to learn anything about turbo systems yet. I know alot of suspension now, I did alot of research and what not... but I still have alot to learn :) Thanks for the link, it looks promising :) have you checked out www.toysport.com ?

Yeah those Toysport guys are really cool, I haven't been to any of their meets but I've seen pics and they look bigger than the NW meets that's for sure. Are you in their area?

are you keeping your sohc engone or geting a 4a-ge, and dont turbo it a buddy of mine had his turbed but with the 4a-ge unless you spend an amazing ampount of money the lag is just enourmous and you wont be able to drift

Neither have I, cuz Mitsu turbos suck :D

Anyway, he is right though, turbo lag is a compromise. If the turbo was chosen well and isn't pushing too high of boost, then it should spool fairly quickly. The only real reason that turbo lag ever becomes a problem is if you're running so high of boost that you need a huge turbo that takes forever to spool.

well from what I know about turbo, he is creating a low boost turbo with extremely light parts (light is their specialty) so that it will spool quick enough and u dont end up with the aweful lag, because when he was trying to convince me to do it that was my biggest pet peave is I didnt want the lag, I wnted the power under my foot as soon as I pressed the gas, and I wanted to know just how much I was gonna get when I pressed the gas. He's assured me that it wont be a problem :) If it is a problem I'll just kick his a** and go back to N/A lol.

My plans for the drivetrain, as stated before, involve a 16v 4A-GE (because you have to cut out the firewall for a 20V and I refuse to deface an 86 in such a manner) with lightweight internals + turbo (maybe), a sport tuned transmission, a dual friction plate clutch with a lightweight flywheel, and a pretty much stock rear end off a GTS with LSD.

But right now I am focusing on the suspension. I might wait a bit longer and buy the short stroke coilover kit from the guys at Techno Toy Tuning, they really seem to know their stuff :) Besides, that seems like it would be better in the long run. Then of course camber plates, strut tower braces, and new wheels and tires (14" rims that sit a full 2 inches inside the wheel well with 185/70R14 tires just wont cut it). Once I have the suspension the way I want it, I'll focus on the internals, but there's alot more than just an engine tranny, and rear end u gotta have to do a GT-S conversion. You need alot of wiring, a gas tank, a fuel pump, an ecu, and a ton of other little tiny crap thats gonna be really hard to find unless I can find a cheap beat down GTS donor car. I had found one a while back for $300 but it got sold the day b4 I was sposed to go take a look at it and buy it. Ah well.

You can use the same tank and I think maybe even the fuel pump (can't remember), but the fuel pump won't do for turbo'ing obviously so you'll have to replace it anyway. I know what you mean about turbo lag, I'm just as picky. High power isn't worth huge lag in anything but drag races, and especially not in drifting. I've got big plans for the GZE if that's what I decide to go with. Everyone has to have their secrets though =) If your friend gets his turbo kit worked out, I'd be very interested to see what setup he chooses. Please keep me informed! What kind of internals are you going to use? What bottom-end/top-end combo? I assume redtop but high-comp or low-comp? If/when I decide to go with a GZE, I currently have a 7-rib redtop bottom-end in mine that you might find useful. The rings are starting to go, so it will need a rebuild which means better deal if you plan on upgrading it anyway. It may be a while though, so I don't know what your timeline looks like.

I'll probably go with a blacktop with a red top ECU, and then custom tune the ECU from there. Not sure about the internals yet... Stage One sells a nice set of lightweight cam gears, and I've heard good thinks about HKS Camshafts, but I havnt even looked into the rest because I'm focusing on the suspension atm :)

Comment on my drift you bastard! lol :) I forgot about the blacktop being a 20v... wait... are you sure? *Goes back and checks* hmm... anywho :) lol. wouldnt mind the extra 4 valves tho... maybe I should look into this.... meh... later.... lol

Nice find, Perg. Do you use the Driving Force, or the GT Force wheel? I bought both wheels and I found the GT Force to be of a much higher qualitative value. The force feadback is more responsive, and the paddles are made much better. What do you think? ;)

my find damn you! lol. Its probably not the "best" wheel out there, but its a wheel, so I am happy, its gotta be better than the poc analog controller for drifting.

Here's a setup I did with a 180SX Type X and some drifting about in it:
