Some of the fouls the referee was missing were shocking. How Italy didn’t have a player sent off I don’t know.

Gutted for England and for Rashford, Sancho and Saka especially.

Italy deserved it they were the better team on balance in the game and the best in the tournament, what a job Mancini has done there.

Baffling young Saka took the final penalty and not Grealish.

Are you ****ing me?! How was Grealish not the #5 penalty taker?? You don’t put all the pressure on a 19 year old kid.
This looks right at first glance, but I saw too much excellent players miss their penalty during penalties shootout.

Not a red, apparently:

"It's coming Rome
It's coming Rome
It's coming...
Football's coming Rome...

Everyone seems to know the score
They've seen it all before
They just know
They're so sure

That England's surely threw it away
Surely blew it away
Italia knows they can play
'Cause I remember
Three Lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
55 years of hurt
Euro stopped us dreaming"

Can someone explain why players still stop before kicking the ball for the penalty? Every time they stop, the keeper saves it. All tournament.

I guess we won’t know. My reaction was not after Saka missed. I was immediately concerned when he stepped up. Managers are judged by their decisions. Mancini got it right. Southgate did not show any bravery throughout the game.

I think Southgate got his substitutions wrong. Declan Rice was playing brilliantly and he takes him off. The only one that kinda worked was Grealish.

It wouldn't have mattered that much if Saka was one or two places further down the line, it was sudden death at that point anyway (and going "last" to boot). If's and but's.

My fear now is that those select 3 get absolute dogs abuse... ☹️

It's supposed to impose the timing to the goalkeeper in order to put him out of his comfort zone.

Yeah the game management from Southgate wasn't great, Mancini was aggresive with his subs and Southgate was slow to respond.

Playing for penalties and bringing on two attacking players for the shootout very late on backfired, and Saka taking that last pen was a weird one for me.

Oh you know their social media accounts are filing up right now with the most hateful things you can think of.

Chielini pulling Saka is not a red card. It would be if it was closer to the box, next to the midfield is not.

Donnaruma selected as player of the tournament.

The discussion for the Ballon d'Or ir completely open now.

As of the time of this reply... I'm still trying to explain my dad why Southgate put both Rashford and Saka in the team being afro-english using the WHOLE French team as an example... 🙄🙄

Nerves got them... As simple as that...

Small club manager. The problem for England is there is no one else.

I'm going to sign off on here as I have been on here most of the day.

Like I said Italy fully deserve it, they have been fantastic this tournament and both Bonucci and Chiellini have been immense.

England too have had a great tournament and can be proud of making it to the final, it was a step too far tonight but I think they are heading in the right direction, a World Cup semi final and a Euros final in the last two majors is pretty good.

Gutted for England but Italy werearguably the better side for most of the game.

Southgate was too timid IMO, but the Italian defence was razor sharp when it needed to be, and it made the difference.

Penalties is always a harsh way to lose, but I can't fathom what England were thinking sending two players up there who hadn't touched the ball all night, and then leaving the crucial kick to Saka. I feel sorry for them, but given how important shootouts are, it was unforgivably poor strategy.

Jorghino's assault on Grealish was a straight red and really was a disgrace, Chellini's yellow was lucky given Saka could have been clear on goal otherwise, but arguably not a red card. Maguire looked like a rabbit in the headlights all night and was really poor, Sterling had a poor match, and Kane played the 1st half brilliantly and then disappeared.

All round a very disappointing night but not all that unexpected in the end.
