Ugly But Appealing Vehicles

People, Bertone styled cars aren't ugly. They may look strangely old-fashioned today, but they were regarded as beautiful in their time, which means they aren't actually ugly.

I mean not like this:

Always thought this one looked daft (for an Aston), too much tacked-on tackiness, but interesting, nonetheless.

But it looks like a manly modern muscle car! I don't think it looks daft in the slightest, it looks awesome.

I don't like color, though. I think it would look good in a Butternut Yellow.

Even though I prefer it in black for that cool Cold War vibe here's one in your requested colour. ;)

And here's an earlier example with the cyclops headlights which looks even better.

I wouldn't call these Tatra's even remotely ugly though, strange maybe but still gorgeous to my eyes, maybe the earlier T87 even more so.

Things got a bit awkward with the 613 and the later models which were based on it.
Looks a bit like a cross between an early Passat and a Renault 30 to me but it still had the rearmounted aircooled V8 which perhaps makes this the only Tatra which is ugly but appealing (the early ones are simply just appealing, period).

All hail the SD1, still the coolest uncool car of all time. :D Love it.

I'm really fond old working-class british(german for Opel/Vauxhall) stuff. If you're British I find it impossible not to like these;

None of those cars above are ugly really. Some are a bit dull, but you'd struggle to call them "ugly".

And the 405 is still one of the best-resolved saloons we've had in Europe.

They're either dull or garish enough (in the case of the MG's) to be ugly to me but I like the look of them (they're not beautifl, though), except maybe the Monza, I think it looks awesome actually.

Well since my dad worked for Rover for 15 years of my childhood, I have some "unique" memories, if not fond ones, of cars such as the SD1 and the Maestro.. and the Metro, and the Montego... :(

The Russian Zil and Gaz cars can be quite ugly but purposeful at the same time, though for me, one car iv'e always found quite ugly is the Saab 90 turbo (i know many will disagree..), but as the years have gone by, i can actually see the beauty in the design, the same applies for many 70's-80's BMW's (imo).

Gandini's Citroen BX is another example of bland yet appealing.

Reliant Robin.... My family's first car when i was a nipper, i'm sure many will consider ugly, but we had some good times in that 3-wheeler/plastic pig :D, so for me, i still find it appealing in some kind of way...

I strongly disagree with the "bland" bit - in retrospect I think it's one of the more interesting shapes of the 1980s, particularly earlier, pre-facelift models. The surfacing is really neat and it avoided one of the perennial design issues of the 80s, which was the 'generic grille, generic square headlights' look. Look head on at a dozen 80s saloons and typically the front end will differ only slightly, but the BX is quite unique.

It's just a pity there are so few BXs left these days. Like many bog-standard cars from most eras, they were used and abused and then scrapped.

Most Citroëns suffer from that faith. As soon as they are aging, and the oily bits of the suspension starts to leak, it just becomes too expensive to repair a car like that.

^I know a guy who still runs a CX estate, but yeah the spheres...

@ hfs.

Yep, i guess "bland" is a bit of a generalisation, and i hear you on the grill thing, but the BX wasn't unique in that respect.... Renault 5 ? (although not as sharp edged)... and the Fiat Ritmo?

PS. Always loved the 405.

[EDIT]

@ hfs.

With regards to the BX.. i think the Sierra was also a game changer when it came to grill treatment.

My father had a 405 for years. Bloody awful thing.

Just keeping the balance here, carry on. :D
