I think it's just the nature of some people of my generation that just like mean or angry looking cars. The hawk-eye STI's headlights coupled with the grill make it look like a car that always has something to prove imo. This is the ugliest version of the Impreza that Subaru has ever made. I will never understand how people preferred this over the much more coherent looking GR hatch, or it's blob-eye/bug-eye predecessors.
It's a toss up between this model and the bug eye for me in terms of the ugliest Impreza ever made. Maybe the bug eye edges out the hawk eye just a bit in terms of ugliness. The blob eye, for me, is by far the most attractive out of the second generation models. In terms of the best looking Imprezas, it's between it and the 22B. Looking back, the third generation was boring at most and not particularly ugly. Too bad the rest of the car was crap though.

There's a slightly better looking version of the car, but it's not exactly a Subaru. Is there a "slab-side" version of those? That's something I could maybe get behind. I gather all of these are AWD regardless of other specification, but maybe there's something more generic? I'd take generic over those ugly wide arches.
Ah, yeah, but that wasn't ever offered as anything but a wagon to the best of my knowledge, and I simply don't fetishize wagons the way some do. It is definitely better looking, though. There's a slightly better looking version of the car, but it's not exactly a Subaru.

Ew. It's like those Silverados with Escalade front ends but the fenders and quarter panels don't match. There's some people that have done the nose conversion on the sedans and it's... weird.
You're trying too hard. This is without a doubt the ugliest STI ever made.
So it's really not that ugly then? You're trying too hard.
Didn't realize how unpopular of an opinion this is since I'm not too much of a Porsche person, but I like how the 996 looks, especially with the facelift and in GT3 guise. I think it looks better than the 997.1 and the 997.2.
I've grown to like the 996 more and more, especially the facelift. I feel like the 997 has aged in a sort of weird way, but I'm not sure how to describe it. For me though, the best 996 is the Targa. And honestly, I like it more than the retro design of the 991/992 Targa with the classic hoop. I feel like a 996 Targa is an unpopular one.
Not sure how unpopular of an opinion this is, but I think that the 992 is the least good-looking generation of the 911. It's certainly not awful, but my problem with it is how pudgy and bulbous it looks. It still has that signature 911 shape thankfully, but it looks massive, to the point if I see on the road I often think it's a Panamera at first. I saw one parked next to a pre-facelift 997 and the size difference is very noticeable.
Yup. I could only imagine the size difference between a 992 and the original '64 901. Would make for an interesting comparison.I used to think the 996/997 was big (compared to the classic shelled 911s) but yeah, compared to the 991/992 they're pretty compact.

Man, that new 911 is THICC!
and then they get uppity and whiny when someone points out that poor full competition history outside of LeMans. The Mazda 787B was a largely terrible Group C car and people tend to overlook its rather poor full competition history that wasn't at Le Mans
Do you mean "uppity" here or is "upset" what you're going for? Uppity and whiny aren't mutually exclusive, but upset is more likely to go with whiny.and then they get uppity and whiny when someone points out that poor full competition history outside of LeMans.
