My apologies for not getting back to this thread sooner, I've been busy these last couple of days. 👍
-You mentioned some cars being classified as "unique", but how would the others be classified?
Cars could be unique for many different reasons, and not simple because they are expensive supercars or rare classics.
For example, all cars in GT5 could be classified as
'exceptional',
'excellent',
'average',
'below average', and
'poor'.
These rough ratings could be applied to key categories, like performance, looks, maintenance etc, so you could get a feel for how well that car rates compared to another car of the same type. Better rating will equal a higher asking price.
Many posters have said that they would not like to see players set the price, because of the vastly inflated prices that may arise. Well, I have a solution, to that. Instead of having the player set the price of the car, the price would be determined by some formula that takes into account the the above classifications. if you look after you car, you can expect it to generate a higher price than a car that has been hammered.
Maffski hit upon a point I was going to make too when he said this:

This thread did get me thinking though, and similar to what vincent just posted, it could be very interesting if no two cars were exactly alike in terms of power/torque etc, just like in real life. They could introduce slight discrepances in power output and for example a car that is listed by the manufacturer as having say 480bhp might occasionally randomly come with perhaps 485bhp or 490bhp, we're talking fractional differences, but enough to make it worth hunting down an exceptional example in the auctions or for sale listings.
This is more or less along the lines of what I was thinking when I first thought of unique cars. If your car has slightly higher than usual stock BHP, then it could be rated as
'excellent' or if it is higher still,
'exceptional'. The chances of anyone having a stock car with higher BHP might be small, but there would be a chance that any driver could get one.
-How would the worth of the used cars be determined?
See above. 👍
-How would the car auctions function? Would it be something like Forza's auction house or something along the lines of say, Barrett-Jackson?
I wasn't thinking anything ridiculously difficult when I though of auctions. I have not played Forza 2, so I can't comment on how the auctions work in that game, but for GT5 I though of something pretty similar to how EBAY works.
When you sell a car, you would be presented with an additional option to auction it too. If you select to auction it, you would be presented with a simple screen that has a couple of options.
For instance, you could have an option to set a minimum price you are willing to sell the car for, similar to a reserve. You could also set a buy-out price (which may or may not be the same as the reserve), and finally, the length of time the auction should last for. Once these parameters are set, the car details would be posted to a section on the online used car lot, and other drivers would be able to bid on, or buy-out the auction.
RACECAR
Ok, I see what you mean now. In that case, you may not be able to race that person's car since it won't reconize it. Then again though, I basing that off what I've seen with Grid where you could not race a person using a car from the 8-Ball Content unless you had it too.
Well there are two ways of doing this. For public races, I think It wouldn't be a problem as the online match making system would tie up all the players that have the same DLC cars and fit them into a race. The problem becomes harder when you have private races. If not all players in the private race have the car, then they would obviously be disabled.
Thinking a bit further on about this, I think that PD might release cars in packs of maybe 4 or 5 or even 6 cars, that are balanced with each other. This would ensure that there was greater variety of cars amongst the field of competitors. Then again, i may be wrong, but that's my take on it. 👍

As for trading/selling/auctioning cars/parts, if the wear and tear of parts (not crash damage, but degradation of parts) is simulated, this might make a used cars/parts player market interesting, as there would be parts of different quality that could be available for a lower price than a brand new part.
Sega GT from a few years ago, had a similar thing. You could buy used parts that were the same as the full-price versions, but had a much bigger chance of failure. Many of times I had raced my car too aggressively, and found that the 'used' exhaust I had installed had fallen off mid race, causing all sorts of problems!
Guys, you are doing exactly what you want PD NOT to do. You constantly come up with ideas like "it would be great if this or that could be added". Just imagine what would happen if Kaz and PD actually listened to you- GT5 would NEVER be released. Just let go. We need tracks and cars with GT physics. That's what GT is about.
That maybe so, but think of this. I seriously doubt that GT5 will be released as a finished product. Don't get me wrong, the game will not be released half done, just that there will be plenty more content in the pipes.
GT5 has taken so long to produce, that it would be illogical for PD to move onto the next game so soon without exploiting this game. 👍

hehe yeah I thought that was a bit too much of a coincidence. Used to DJ with bukem, tayla and blame back in the day, I still dj and produce, but the atmospheric side of things is a bit dead these days... hit me up sometime and I'll hook you up with a mix n ting.
You know your tunes pal! Most people spot the obvious 'Above and Beyond' connection, but your the only guy to have spotted the rest! I very well may hit you up for a mix (or two), what you got?

👍
