User Decals - A Tutorial On How To Make .SVG (Request in separate thread)

I've gotten my SVG file down to 18kb from ~200kb. It can't go without any more missing points without looking deformed. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to shave file size by a few kb so I'll finally be able to upload it?

Currently using the free trial of Illustrator.

So I found a site to shrink the file size of high quality logo pngs I want to use (Very good) and have used inkscape to turn those into SVGs well under the 15 KB limit.

However, I keep getting this:

upload_2017-11-19_22-33-14.png

What am I doing wrong?

I know there's some guys in here using Corel. I was able to upload some logos the other day, but now everything I try to upload, I get..."a server error occured". Even with that, I think the issue is on my end. My files are well under the size limit, I even tried a simple box at 700bytes, and still got the error, so the problem is something else. Another test I tried was grabbing an SVG file off of a logo site, and it uploaded no problem.

I feel there's a setting in my Corel that's keeping the files from uploading, but I be damn if I can find it. I already have a day and a half in troubleshooting this, with no resolution.

Any ideas? @MatskiMonk @vicbol

Edit: Solution found. Under Styling Options, the drop down box must have Presentation Attributes selected.

There seems to be some other requirements besides file size. But I am of not much help at the moment as I still can't upload anything.

SVG is XML Code, there may be something Corel writes into the XML tags that's causing the problem. I'd offer to troubleshoot for you, but I don't have a PS4!

If you want to upload, or post the XML from the files here, I don't mind looking to see if there's anything obvious.

Thanks for the offer, but I just figured it out. Under Styling Options it needs to be Presentation Attributes, anything else and you get the error on GT's site.
I'm back in business. :)

I'm getting really frustrated with the uploader. Most of the files in game just looked scrambled, and I can't figure out what's causing it....

It does seems the PS4 implementation is different, you see it well in the uploader and in the game it shows differnetly, I guess sharing here is the best we can do.

I have been trying to optimise a decal, with SVGGO web app thing, but once the file saved as, the uploaded just tells me there is a server error.

I chopped the decal up and aggressively removed nodes manually in Inkscape and the uploader was happy with that file... So has anyone else had problems with files that have been adjusted with SVGGO?

it is the first time I have tried to use that app and then upload the results...

I actually use it to get something working, my work generally does not load until I put it through SVGOMG, I recommend people to try it when they have issues.

So, now it's available to everyone. Figured I'd take immediate advantage of this.

Among the things I've just uploaded within the last hour include:
* Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey
* The logos for Sears, Skunk2 Racing, Scorpion Exhausts, and Waco Aircraft

I am going to have so much fun with this feature...then again, I'm also going be working my butt off in Illustrator and in Inkscape just to get these decals available.

EDIT: I can't upload decals, because for some reason PD put an arbitrary request limit per "unknown amount of time". Does anyone know how long I have to wait before I can upload decals again after a binge?

Maybe a dumb question, but how do you 'share' your custom decals? I've uploaded them and they appear ingame for me, but it seems other people can see them in the 'discover tab'. I also didn't need to put in any hashtags like we have to do with liveries or pics.

TUTORIAL #2: VECTOR MAGIC

Now to the second tutorial! This one was provided by our very own @Lord Protector :)

Vector Magic can be downloaded for free for Windows and Mac OS, but it is a little more restricted. You can only preview your work in the trial, not save it. A license can be bought for $7.95 / month, which is cheaper than Illustrator, which stands at $29.99 / month. You can choose an online browser version or an actual application.

Anyway, let's continue!

Step 1: Find a logo on the internet. Logo must be a JPG or PNG format. I use Google and just download any picture I like.

Step 2: Open the logo in Vector Magic and click "Fully Automatic". There is no need to go with "Basic" or "Advanced" because the first one gives the best results anyway.

Step 3: Once the logo is scanned, make sure the color palette is only the colors you actually need. Do NOT let it set "Unlimited Colors" as the logo will look worse and more importantly, size will be dramatically higher (remember, 15kb is your limit).

Step 4: If there are artifacts in the vector based logo, choose "Edit Results" and correct artifacts with either "Pencil" or "Fill", depending if artifact is connected to the logo or not. You can easily change colors by selecting "Color" and clicking on the color you want to use.

Step 5: You want your logos to have transparent background. Click "Remove Background" and then use "Erase" tool to erase parts you don't want present in your logo. Don't forget the insides of letters, like "a, o" etc. Do this really carefully, zoom-in the logo and look at every part, I can't even say how many times I had to everything from scratch because I missed something.

Step 6: Choose "Done Reviewing" and then save the results. I use drag and drop method as it seems easier to me, just don't forget to choose .svg!

View attachment 690742

Step 7: Review your results and check the size. Size must NOT be greater then 14.999 bytes otherwise it will not upload. Size on disk does not matter.

Step 8: Use the online optimizer mentioned earlier if needed. It's a very handy tool, but only use the precision that's needed. Remember 14kb is your target, not 8kb. Don't screw up your logo, always try the lowest precision first.

Step 9: Go to the GTS Community website and upload your decal. Always type in a good titles for decals, so you can find it more easily in the game.

The finished result can be seen or downloaded here.

Enjoy making decals for Gran Turismo Sport!

Good sites to find pre-made vector logos:

WorldVectorLogo
Brands of the World
Logopedia
Instant Logo Search
Wiki Commons

Having subscribed to this, it turns out the automatic background remover is only in the desktop version. Fuming.

my min I can get is in the mid 20's for kb size. why only 15kb for max limit? I can't even convert that small and I'm a new noob when it comes to this. Sometimes I get over 100kb to over 3Mb. Irritating lol. Used online converters from png to svg and also inkscape with no luck.

Go to your library in the game, decals, user created, press triangle over the decal(or pic or livery) and you get the option to share.

Which one worked well for you? I tried one with an uploader and it kept saying 0% reduction no matter what file size the input was.

A couple only worked if you paste in the xml and I havent figured out how to copy that out of Inkscape yet (tho I havent spent a lot of time in it yet).

So I managed to get my svgs uploaded, but they show up as nothing in game.
I'm having the same issue. The site says the SVG uploaded and the game apparently recognizes that I uploaded a decal, but it's blank when I click on it. Any ideas?

So apparently I need to learn how to .svg properly because at the moment most of the ones I've been working on for weeks look like Kirk Van Houten's interpretation of dignity.

You cannot just open a png and save it as a svg. It needs proper vectors.

I use Corel Draw and Illustrator, but in my opinion Corel is much more intuitive.

You can search logos here save as EPS format (is already a vector file) and import to Corel. Resize, change colours or whatever you want and then export it as SVG. Done.

This is what I tried to do, but my first round of decals all failed. Something in the CorelDraw settings was off. I tried converting the .cdr files into svg using a free online converter, and then loading them into the Vectr online app to check. There would usually be something I would have to fix, but saving from the Vectr app gave an svg file that the uploader would accept.

I also have some issues with decals which look perfectly fine on the GTS website both before and after uploading, but in the game itself all the transparencies have failed and it just becomes a solid black shape. Another where the colours were all lost once I got it into the actual game (again it was fine on the website interface).

Anyone else have these problems and/or any solutions?

I'm having this problem too. I'm trying to upload some old Lego emblems like the M Tron logo but when I upload them and look at them in game, it's just a black circle. Please help me.

Has anyone here an idea for Inkscape?

I can't get the filesize down, even with the minifyer, unless I open the .PNG file I created before in linked mode,
but then the uploader throws me an error.

Could it be that you have been using a huge canvas/artboard? GTS recognises the whole artboard and displays it, so it could be your logo is actually there, it is just extremely small on the preview.

The issue is how GTS is interpreting these "cut outs". Seems the implementation is very basic. A workaround could be to perform double cuts, but haven't tried it yet. Basically you would copy the shape you cut out, and cut twice.

The png file is your problem, because it's bitmap data.

check this explanation:
http://www.gran-turismo.com/us/gtsport/news/00_4307308.html
Well, I have to start somewhere, don't I?
I'm not trying to upload a PNG. I created a PNG in Photoshop from a JPG I found on the web.
Then I open the PNG with the in Photoshop removed background in Inkscape and save that as a normal SVG file.
Then I use the SVG Minifyer, but the filesize change is only tiny (like instead of 18.3 Kb 18 etc.

I don't quite understand what I'm missing.

If you want you can post it here so I can have a look, but from what I understand, you are still trying to save a bitmap in an svg.

Png or jpg doesn't matter, no need to convert it. It is bitmap data. If you save it as a svg, it will still be bitmap data, just within a svg "container".

you can look at svg like a it's a zip file. Inside the zip there could be anything. The zip file does not define the content of it.
