I just want to say I really like your setup wayside. I'm using it as a good starting point for mine. I'm wondering how did you attach the ply on the armrest where the black is, and is the black paint or fabric? Also how sturdy is it? And do you have more pictures on how the shifter attaches?

Again, great setup!

Thanks slogt. Here are some pics I took while building the armrest:

The shifter mounts to the main cross brace with the c clamps and the panels rest on the recessed cross braces and are bolted in from the bottom using Hex Drive Threaded Inserts (used through most of the install) so they can be easily removed. The armrest panels are covered in black leather from an old jacket that I got as a gift and never used. The whole setup is really very sturdy.

Wayside,
can you please give me all the dimension for these cuts:

When I cut the lumber I had just brought my laptop out to the garage and checked the SketchUp plans before each cut, like 'need 2 60" long 2X4s' and cut them, then next cut... Sorry, don't have a list but if you go through the trouble of figuring out exactly how many 2X4s and exactly how to cut them to get minimal waste I would appreciate it if you posted your findings to the thread.

very nice rig, a great alternative to a similar steel one i made, great work you should be proud of a great job

Thanks Kacprzak. As fun to drive as they are to build :)

nice Rig.

Always fun to built a rig.

i just don't like the colour of the rig, but that's a taste issue

You forgot to add a beer holder in your shifter mount ;)

Color, what color ;)
Actually it's supposed to be like the grey they use in the cockpits of Nascar cup cars.

Seems as though the contents of my zip files keep getting lost. Let's try it this way instead:

How long did it take you to model that in Sketchup?

Not long at all, maybe 6 hours over a few days. Once I figured out how to create the material (this was my first SketchUp project) it was pretty easy. I had the basic idea, just had to make it work with lumber and fit all the equipment.

what abt the cockpit's solidity ?

btw, i rlly admire ur work ;)

Hello, and welcome to GTPlanet.

Please take the extra 1.2 seconds required to type your messages in complete words. Not only is text speak against the rules, we find that it really improves the quality of our forums when people care enough to type in real words. If you don't have the extra nanoseconds it takes to spell properly, then perhaps you shouldn't be posting at all.

Thank you.

weird, i just spent 1.2 seconds to edit those nonsense words and it worked like a magic ! 👍

and yes, I edited my post in case YOU didn't notice

EDIT: I'm really sorry if I reduced the quality of GTP(or should I say GTPlanet) forums by any chance.

Your rig is mine! I have decided yours is basically what I was trying to draft out all along. I have a dfgt wheel but I still want the side arm rest. My pedals wont be inverted and awesome (im not sure the dfgt's can be torn apart like that?). Anyway.

When I get home Im downloading your files and buying some wood. My phone says I still have 95 days till gt5 comes out so Im good. However I wont get the screen for it till Christmas. Not sure what size would work best with your rig? 32\37\even a cheap 42 is in my budget, whats your take?

Cool, this is a pretty easy build so you should have fun putting it together.

As far as the screen size goes, I have not had any complaints about the 23". My take, I think the 23" fits the rig very well and at the distance it sits seems like the perfect size. If the 23" were to die I may try a size or two bigger but my main concern would be that the monitor is centered to the driver and that it doesn't hang over the left side of the dashboard.

How tough would it be to get in/out of it, if you had another armrest on the other side?

The great thing about this design is that there is no climbing. You can step in and out just about as easy as getting in and out of your average street car, maybe even easier because of the opening in the floorboard (there is no initial step up). I really like how friends and family are psyched to take a spin. If you had to climb over the armrest I don’t think many people would be as willing to give it a try.

As for a ‘climb in’ style setup, you would be better served taking a different design route because you could use the armrests on both sides to support the dash. Short answer: I think you could probably step over the armrest on to the seat without too much trouble as long as you placed the chassis on the ground.

Thanks! Do you miss not having an armrest on the left side? I was thinking for long sessions it would be nice, and could have a cup holder in it. I was thinking something on the lines of this.

Oh yeah, seat will be raised in final design.

That's not a bad idea, you keep the step in functionality while adding a left side armrest. You could even design it similar to the right side where it wouldn't be a box but instead an arm rest with supports. That may fit the overall design better.

Right side armrest is steady enough to place your beverage without worrying about it falling over.

Yeah, I had covered it just to see what it looked liked, but under the shell, it is built like the other side. I'm not sure if I want to do the same size as the right one, because that makes the cockpit 4' wide :nervous:

If I had a dedicated basement or area for it, that wouldn't be a problem, but this will be in the main living room of my house.

Maybe something like this will work for you:

A couple hinges and a locking mechanism and you will have the armrest without actually making the rig any wider.

Just an idea.

Thanks Wayside, I was thinking something like that too. A benefit I was thinking of making it a full arm, was I could use it as storage. I'm just weighing the pros and cons.

Have you modified yours anymore? Or have anything you want to change?

I was thinking more like an armrest built into the seat like the foldup ones that come with the seats of a minivans center row captains chair.

i love this rig. its an excellent starting point and better placement wise then any other rig out there.. this is so far the most real car like..

i joined up just to say thanks :)

and for all those out there who want to
1) mount their pedals upside down
2) change the steering wheel to a real one and add bigger shifter wings or
3) who want to add a hand break to their cockpit
using the logitech G25 or G27 then chilicoke has some really great tutorials and parts

im going to do all of the above plus add a keyboard + mouse tray, cup holder and design it so that it can pack away like the race-star converTTable, check it out in action.

I used Google SketchUp to design the cockpit. Once I had it looking pretty good and the measurements made sense I went out to the garage and cut all the lumber for the basic frame in one shot. I assembled the basic frame and made sure the seat rails matched up and that the dash placement was good.

is there a way to use Google SketchUp to export the dimensions for all the bits of wood you cut? or did you just know what lengths to cut since you designed it?
im guessing the other option is to use the tape measure tool...

has anyone got a model of the logitech G25/G27?

Wayside I've measured everything and getting ready to buy the wood.
But I cant quite get the correct measurement for the two beams on each side that hole up the desk for the steering wheel. It comes up as ~ 4 61/64

keep in mind that I'm looking at the width of it

I'll tell ya guys, our hobby is exploding. Just think, a few years ago it was controller or some ****** toy wheel. Now everyone is getting busy building these awesome pits. Kudos to all you custom builders.

I get 4 17/64" when I measure the length of the angle cut at the top of the two parallel supports for the "dashboard".

If I remember correctly, I used a bit of a cheat to get that to work out as nice as it did. I cut the bottom of those supports on the chop saw, same angle for both and cut them extra long. I mounted each side separately to its respective base and made sure the spacing was true from top to bottom. I then measured (in google sketchup) the front post length at the longest part (29 25/64") and the back post length at the shortest part (27 23/64") and used a straight edge to mark the wood. Took it apart and made the cuts. You don't have to follow the measurements exactly (29 and 27 should be fine), just make sure both sides are the same.

Make sense?

I think I've got it, the bottom part where the two beams are attached- that part is 11''
so I'll just made the width of each beam 5'' and leave a 1'' space in-between them

The part along the bottom where the two beams are attached is 11'', So.. the width of the beams should be 5'' each and 1'' space between them.. just like the gap shown in the design...

Hi i have been checking your cockpit out in google sketch, awsome design but I was wondering If I could make it 1300mm instead of 1600mm?
how big are you? Im 5,8 and Im going to do some sort of cockpit but space is limited In my new house
