In my honest opinion, no matter how good you are using manual, you're still holding yourself back. Made in Holland, however good a driver he is, will never be able to catch Mr.P - the closer they both get to absolute perfect driving, the more likely there are going to be races where Mr.P will beat him because of it. The shifter is just another tool to control your car's driving behaviour with - sometimes you want the car revving high, sometimes low for instance - and when gearing can't be tuned, then many cars will be slightly faster when shifting manual, because the optimal shifting point is before or after the redline.
The very best AUTO drivers can cheat half of this by holding the shift button to prevent the car from upshifting. This should give you a clue. Then I could quote thousands of converts who were going faster after switching to manual. The point is, I'm not saying this to flame anyone. I just want to make sure you understand the choice you make. Made in Holland has shown that you can go very fast with AUTO, but for each Made in Holland there are a few Mr.Ps showing that MT is still faster.
As for in-car vs ex-car view, that's another matter. Both have their advantages. I prefer in car view, because ultimately
1. you have a bigger view of the track. This means you can be more precise when you pass the track. However, this is initially masked by the fact that you can see the full car ex-car, and you cannot in-car. But once you get a 'feel' for the dimensions of the car, the in-car view starts to be a precision instrument surpassing ex-car view. It's a long term reward, but it's certainly there.
2. it brings what your brain perceives closer to the reactions needed. Ex-car you are behind your car and have to position your mind's eye a little forward into the track. This I think is actually harder than driving in-car, but initially it is compensated by a better view of the track and the turns coming up, and the position of the car on the track.
I don't have a problem with AUTO drivers, and even less with ex-car drivers. Especially the combination is good, they can see me overtake them and so make way.
Seriously though, it's all a matter of the goals you set yourself. I aim high. Not that this means I'll get there, as I don't have as much time for driving as some top drivers (though probably also more than others ...), but I want to give myself every chance I have nevertheless. And I want to feel like I'm driving a car, not playing a game, but that's often a non-issue for DS2 drivers anyway.
