Volkswagen today revealed the GTI W12 concept — an ultra-high-performance version of its popular GTI hatchback. Featuring a 12-cylinder, 6.0 liter motor, the GTI W12 can hit 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds.

Delivering 650 horsepower and 553 pound feet of torque, this GTI uses the same powerplant found in the Bentley Continental, Audi A8, Volkswagen Phaeton, and Touareg. The engine is based on two narrow-angle VR6 engines joined at the crank.

The car features extensive body modifications for increased aerodynamics and rides on 19-inch wheels. Volkswagen says the GTI W12 can hit a top speed of 202 mph. "This GTI moved the wing inward," explains Klaus Bischoff. "The roof is part of an enormous diffuser, which provides sufficient down force on the rear axle. It is made of carbon fiber and forces air over and under the tail spoiler to obtain a perfect amount of pressure on the rear axle."

The purpose of this design study is not known, and production seems unlikely.

Here is the press release from Autoblog

PRESS RELEASE:
Volkswagen Golf GTI W12 650
Showtime at the Wörthersee

Leave conventions behind and let ypur passion awake - since the beginning these were the roots of the GTI idea. Until today they got more than 1.67 million drivers into their spell. Long has the Golf GTI been an icon. A mark for itself.

Since 1982 Golf GTI celebrate it annually in the Austrian Land at the Wörthersee. Thousands come.Volkswagen placed a Golf before them: the Golf GTI W12-650 showcar. This sports car is a inclination before the GTI friends at the Wörthersee, people for whom the GTI is a myth.
Stronger, broader, faster
A Golf was never stronger, broader or faster. It seems that the Golf GTI W12-650 comes directly from the racing course. A Golf that runs like the Pace Car of the 24 hours of Le Mans. Its name means: W12-Zylinder, 650 HP (477 KW with 6.000 rpm). A Showcar, not more, not less. Nevertheless it shows what enormous potential the Golf has to offer.

3.7 seconds, 325 km/h, 750 Newtonmeters
Its 6,0 Liter Biturbo engine is longitudinal and placed directly behind the driver and the front seat passenger. The Golf GTI W12-650 differentiate itself in this way from the classical central engine car. A 6-speed automatic transmission transfers 750 Newtonmeters (at 4.500 rpm) to the rear axle. It catapults the Golf GTI W12-650 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. With a maximum speed of 325 km/h the Golf GTI W12-650 leaves behind nearly all of the world's supercars.

Width 1.88 m, 235er tire in front, 295er tire in the back
Automotive engineers and designers united under Volkswagen Golf GTI W12 650
its 1.88 meters (series: 1.76 meters) spread and 1.42 meters (series: 1.50 meters) flatten body. The chassis components of the Golf GTI W12-650 were adapted directly from supersports cars. The wheels are of course made from a light alloy and because of the gigantic wheel dimensions a specialy engineered tire had to be made.

70 millimeters lower, 160 millimeters broader
The goal was clearly defined - despite the partially dramatic technical changes the study should
remain completely clear that this is a Golf GTI. Therefore as much parts as possible were taken from tha classical GTI like: the headlights, the doors, the front hood and the tail lamps. The axles were pushed 70 millimeters into the body.

The largest problem was to supply the 6-litre central engine with sufficient air and to produce sufficient drift at the rear axle without watering the silhouette of the Golf GTI W12-650. Therefore the C-columns were re-designed in such a way that they lead air to the engine. The rear side windows run inward, so that two channels develop between the disks and the C-columns on the left and on the right to drive air to the engine.
The Carbon fiber roof is a diffuser
Innovative building of the body also prevented that the lines of the Golf GTI W12-650 to get ruined by a putting on a roof wing. The study carries the wing inward. The roof is part of an enormous diffuser, which provides sufficient drift to the rear axle. It's made from carbon fiber and leads air under the normal tail spoiler.

Interior with racing ambitions
The leather is Alcantara. On the middle range of the armatures are Three rows of auxiliary instruments. Transparent "Flip UP" switch guards for central functions like the disconnectible ESP look like taken derectly from the race track.

Fire extinguishers are integrated in the place of the glove compartment to also remind us of the race. Because of weight reasons "stripped" the door linings are complete; only lattices are used, which grant a complete view of the interior mechanics of the door.

I know they will never make it, but just the idea of a 12 cylinder engine in a GTI just seems excessive. Guess the guys at Volkswagen were just sitting around with nothing to do. They probably should have named it hte R60.

Sounds interesting. 👍
I assume this will be 4wd?
I certainly hope it's not FF. :ouch:
Also, I hope they really worked to change the GTI platform to fit a new engine like that. I'm sure the balance could be thrown off and I doubt the original car had a long enough wheelbase to accomidate the speeds a W12 will do.

If all works well it will be a great little car... If all works poorly I'd expect to see this flop big time.

Brilliant. Now stuff the W16 quad-turbo Veyron engine in the A3 and we'll talk. lol

Would. I'm pretty sure this isn't going anywhere, especially seeing that VW didn't even provide a purpose.

Are you kidding? It's MR!!

I read the title and started wondering why anyone would want a 600 hp FF car:dunce:. I certainly hope it's M4(?) (Mid engine, 4wd?).

It's rear-wheel-drive only, not 4Matic.

I had read the VWVortex writeup before this thread was made, but BX beat me to the Create Thread button.

Yeah an FF would get you from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds alright...
It could do, what does a car being FF have to do with being able to hit 60 fast or not? Besides, as has already been pointed out, this car is mid-engined rear wheel drive. I have one word for this concept, insane.

So I loved the V GTI, yes but what the hell?

Seriously, 👎

The styling looks rediculous, and it's far too powerfull, with that weight and such a little chassis, that thing could well be a death trap! I'll have the R32, thanks 👍

-> And heres the article from Inside Line:

Inside Line
WOLFSBURG, Germany — The word "extreme" hardly begins to describe Volkswagen's latest concept, the new Golf GTi W12-650.

Created to headline this weekend's annual gathering of Volkswagen enthusiasts at Woethersee in Austria, the new three-door hatchback was conceived as the wildest, fastest and most powerful incarnation of the Golf GTi ever. With rear-wheel drive and a mid-mounted 12-cylinder engine producing 650 horsepower, its specification meets and beats those of some of the world's most celebrated supercars.

Although it's just a concept car for now, there appears to be real intent in its existence, with high-ranking Volkswagen insiders suggesting it is a signal of what is in store as new VW Chief Martin Winterkorn makes changes aimed at raising Volkswagen's profile.

No ordinary-looking Golf GTi, the W12-650 receives a bespoke steel and carbon-fiber body shell styled in-house under Volkswagen Design Boss Klaus Bischoff.

"Our target was clearly defined. Despite the dramatic technical changes carried out underneath, we strived to retain a classic GTi appearance," he says, adding, "The biggest challenge was to provide the mid-mounted engine with sufficient air without upsetting the silhouette to any great degree." Among the concessions to cooling are a gaping duct up front and substantial openings set into the sills behind the reworked doors. The rear windows have also been reshaped to allow air to enter the body along the leading edge of the C-pillars.

The car has a truly menacing stance and take-no-prisoners visual attitude that's sure to have Volkswagen fans drooling with delight. The standard Golf GTi's 101.5-inch wheelbase has also been shortened by 2.8 inches, providing the W12-650 with a more compact appearance.

At the heart of the Golf GTi W12 is a specially developed twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine constructed by Volkswagen's Motorsport division. Mounted longitudinally behind the front row of seats, it produces more than three times the power and double the torque of the standard Golf GTi's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder power plant, pushing out 650 hp at 6,000 rpm and 553 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm.

The prodigious reserves are transferred to the concept car's rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox with shift paddles on the steering wheel and a locking differential to ensure traction remains strong during full-bore getaways.

Volkswagen claims 0-62-mph acceleration in just 3.7 seconds and a top speed that goes 57 mph beyond that of the showroom version of the Golf GTi to a breathtaking 202 mph.

What this means to you: This GTI concept offers a level of performance that will embarrass all but the top echelon of supercars on sale today.

^ Looks visious if you ask me. Nice work VW!

(:

I wonder how stable that thing would be at high speed. Short wheelbases + high speed usually means dissaster waiting to happen. But most of the time, the entire car hasn't been reshaped to maximise aerodynamic benefits like this has. The entire roof looks like it's been designed to channel air and maximise the downforce from the wing, also it has underbody aerodyanamics as well. I'd be very interested to see what this thing can pull round a popular track with other times to compare.

It's not going to be as stable as it could be if it was built around a longer car, but that's not to say that with all the aerodynamics and what not, it won't be stable. We'll hopefully find out what it's truely capable of.

Well since Renault was stupid and discontinued it's Clio MR hatch, someone had to do something--and the Germans have outdone themselves again. I hope it goes into production--infact put ANY engine larger than 3000cc in the back/middle of the Golf and sell it.

There's no way this will go into production, it's a silhouette concept, nothing more. It might do the rounds at some race tracks and car shows for some time to come, but it'll never become a production reality.

I know this won't go into production, but I think it might be an omen to what the future has in store. Like a few have said, they might be thinking about a MR GTI in the future.

I want to see and hear this thing run.

Just awesome! It certainly shows that the Germans still have a sense of humor!

I'm wondering how well the HPA R32 Stage II would hold-up against the W12 monster, given that it has the "advantage" of AWD, and is only short by 50 BHP...

I don't give a damn who wins I just want to see that drag race to 120mph and then followed by a track race.

That is one mad little concept.

Bravo to VW for the work!

Boo to them for enticing us with yet another car that'll never see series (or even very limited) production... :(

just to be annoying but the hpa golf isnt a true r32,its just a golf with an r32 v6 stuck in and the r32 bodykit as iirc r32 golfs arent legal in canada :P

2004 R32s had seatbelt issues for legality in Canada (IIRC). The issue was fixed for newer MY cars, but the car wasn't actually sold in Canada. It was possible to get one through dealers though. A friend of mine has got an R32 Skyline and he shoots around town with an R32 Golf, but I think we're the only ones who find it funny.

So, um, Piech has control of VW again. That's all this concept tells me. I hope he is using this for an engine test bed more than an actual production car, as I want the Nardo.

The W12 in this is already an established VAG Engine, imo it's simply a "look what we can do" concept.

But the Nardo's W12 produced 600HP, while Naturally Aspirated...

Seriously, I'll cheer for it if they bring out the Nardo. Be it under Bugatti, Audi, Lambo, Porsche, or Skoda/SEAT - just bring it out again. Then do those Golfs.
