What about those Leafs?

So, why not divert money from McCabe's contract to lure a skilled prospect like Evgeni Malkin or Alexander Ovechkin.

Never happen... want to know why? Toronto doesn't have anything those two teams need or want.

Okay, so my comparison was a tad outrageous... But that seems to be close to the sum that McCabe is being paid. At least distribute it to another worthy player, such as Mats Sundin.

Point is: Ferguson is most likely behind this idiocy.

P.S: Can't believe the Raptors lost to Real Madrid...

Also: Glad to see this thread back on its feet.

Tomas Kaberle is the only reason anybody ever thought Bryan McCabe was good, Kaberle makes everybody on the ice around him better. It's an incredible injustice that a scrub and defensive liability like McCabe is being paid more than Kaberle, who is among the league's best defensemen.

Unfortunetely I don't get to see too many Leafs games on tv since I live in Pittsburgh, so the first game I have been able to see so far was the game against the Pens last night. They blew their two goal lead and it was all downhill from there.

What do you think of Toskala? I think he's an upgrade from Raycroft, but I'm still not totally sold on him yet.

I wouldn't say Toronto sucks but they are very inconsistent, sometimes they have great games, other times they have terrible games. It seems like it depends on whether or not the team wants to play any given night. Although I didn't watch the Carolina/Toronto game, I caught the highlights.

Ponikarovsky (sp?) had the puck in the Carolina end with an empty net and opted not to shoot before it was too late, he was stripped of the puck, the 'Canes went the other way and scored on a one-timer, tieing the game.

Into Overtime, Ponikarovsky was forechecking in Carolina's end and gets a penalty. The 'Canes proceed to score on the ensuing power-play. So the Leafs once again blow a lead and lose.

Thankfully I am a New Jersey fan, so it didnt hurt to bad but you never want to see a Canadian team blow a lead like that, even if it is Toronto. I can assure you that all the Leafs fans around me are pretty P.Od

Nicely summed, Formula1Driver. The inconsistency is getting to the point where fans are suggesting that Mats Sundin (the Leaf's captain) should start packing his bags and head back to Sweden. It is sad because he is too devoted to the team and is a great team player, always supporting his linemates and pulling his team to confront these tough times.

I understand why some people would like to see the Swede back across the ocean, but he would not ask for anything more than to be a Leaf to his retirement.

Those New Jersey Devils do appear to be a good team...

Ya I have heard some people talking about Mats going back to Sweden but I don't think he wants to, I am sure he wishes for nothing more than to win the Stanley Cup in Toronto. He has been in Toronto for a real long time and I am sure he considers it his home, plus he has been around the NHL too long without winning a cup to go to Sweden and play in a Swedish league and play for some other championship that not many people have heard about.

I really think it is a shame because Mats is such a talented player and if he were on a different team or had some really talented winger to back him up, he would have more like 1800 points instead or 1300 (give or take).

Mats Sundin waived his no-trade clause... (sad expression)

...hopefully, he'll get a Stanley Cup or two now, but there's not much hope at this time.

The real problem is an organization that doesn't care about the team's on ice performance as long as they're bringing in money, which they are.

Ferguson needs to be canned ASAP, he's a disgrace.

Thats true, they are the most important team to the NHL and bring in the most revenue by far. The owners and management know that they will sell tickets and make alot of money no matter what happens, there is a waiting list probably 10 years long (or more) for season tickets, which just shows how popular they are.

They definately need to get rid of JFJ but I hope they don't fire Maurice, I like him and think hes a good coach. In regards to Mats, was this the last year in his contract? If so, they should trade him for some picks, prospects, and a good player to a very good playoff contender so that he can win his Stanley Cup, then he would probably gladly resign with Toronto once the playoffs are over.

Mats originally had a no-trade clause in his contract, but I don't think it was his last year, though it would explain why people are so tense to trade him.

A tribute: When he was on the Swedish national team, playing on the same line with Peter Forsberg and another amazing countryman, he was just racking up points, scoring 17 goals in the series, I think. This trade will hopefully get him to a team where his linemates are skilled players, and he can finally show to North America his full capabilities. He spent his best years toiling long and hard as the captain of a Bismarck-type ship, though...

But hey, they (Boston) sent Ray Bourque away to get a Stanley Cup, and he did. Hope is still there.

The day that Mats Sundin scores on the Leafs on the other side, I will truly cry, but for his own sake.

Definately, I have no doubt that on almost any other team or with atleast one other star forward Mats would have more than 1300 points (roughly). He is actually one of the best power forwards and has been for a really long time, he just hasn't had anyone to work with him and really produce.

Ferguson has left! Cliff Fletcher is back at 72 for an interim role, and Mats Sundin may stay. Can't understand why Ferguson is 'proud of his legacy', though.

Sundin may have played what possibly could have been his last game...

Ferguson really left a mess. Even if the Leafs received Stemkes, he would be useless without good linemates, and the old man (Cliff Fletcher aside) gave the franchise people nobody else wants. I mean, who wants Bryan McCabe now?

The Pens wanted Hal Gill so it's not too over the top to think someone would have wanted McCabe, I mean even though he's a joke in the defensive zone, he can still score on the PP.

I just hope they can dump off his and Kubinas humungous contracts in the off season, those guys are the problem, not Sundin and Kaberle.

It's sad how Bryan McCabe lists his wife as a reason to go to New York. Surely everybody wants him there, except New York's GM and coaching staff.

I am rejoicing for the reason that Sundin is staying, though.

I still think the Leafs got unlucky when Sundin and everyone else didn't wave their no-trade clauses.

What if Mats retires after the season, the leafs are left with not much offense at all, I dont like when people say, "He loves Toronto, he has roots" I think he goes back to Sweden once the season is over and comes back for the next.

There was definately interest in McCabe and the others, but because of these no-trade clauses the Leafs got screwed. Even if McCabe is overrated, he is still a decent player, sure he screws up but I would say he is a top 4 defense and not some guy that sits on the bench.

I stopped watching when Wendel Clark (Cap'n Crunch) retired. He was the Kasuyoshi Okamura (Oka-chan) of Hockey.

Why the ADVAN jacket if his car is sponsored by Yashia Factory and HKS?

The Leafs are still in, you know. Unless they lose to the Flyers or if they fail to win the next ten games. It's still possible!

At least that picture's somewhat funny (Leaf Fan). That was probably taken in Toronto, however...

All this false hope is really getting annoying, last night I wanted the Flyers to beat the Leafs so that everyone can stop with all the talk about them making the playoffs.

Lets get serious, the Eastern Conference is pretty much set as it is, maybe playoff positions will shift but the teams are pretty much staying put. Even if the Leafs by some amazing run manage to get into the playoffs, who are they going to play in the first round, Montreal, New Jersey, or the Penguins? I don't think they have much chance against either of those teams.

Well, I guess that it is more the fact of making it to the playoffs rather than win a Stanley Cup. The problem is that so many people appear to see the intention for the Leafs to take it all, when in fact what it should be is to avoid matching a record last set in 1928: the only Leafs lineup to miss the playoffs for 3 consecutive years. And, nobody's really rooting for them even if they do make it or not, because most of the fans have left. The only reasons I root for them are because Mats Sundin is the LeBron James (or vice versa) of the Leafs, carrying a weak franchise on his shoulders, and for the reason that I am disgusted with everybody tearing down Sundin's legend and undermining his real leadership skills and talent. Yes, he is 37 years old, but who else will take the monumental role he has now when he inevitably retires? Jason Blake? Kyle Wellwood? Bryan McCabe? It says quite a bit that he chose to stay in Toronto, when so many other options were open for him. And this is why I remain faithful to the Leafs, personally.
