Days 29, 30, and 31 of my #31DaysofHalloweenViewing ends with a Hammer Horror and both Hocus Pocus movies. The Curse of Frankenstein stars Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as the monster. It was pretty much the first of the classic Hammer Horror line of movies, shot in glorious color and filmed in an actual derelict manor. Hocus Pocus 2 shouldn't even exist, considering the first one was both a critical and commercial failure. But Hocus Pocus found it's audience in the home video market, and critics softened a bit, recognizing the brilliance of Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson Sisters. The second movie also got poor reviews, but to me, it's got the same heart as first movie and ended with a surprisingly heartfelt scene from Midler. Considering Parker is 57, Najimy is 65 and Midler is 76, it seems unlikely we'll get a Hocus Pocus 3.

It's been fun. I think next year I'll do every "Treehouse of Horror" episode from The Simpson.

Been enjoying some Hong-Kong/Chinese action films that are free on Youtube (with ads). After hearing lots of people praise Donnie Yen, I figured I'd check out some of his films that YT had as well as some others. Some examples that are available still are the Ip Man series (1 to 3), Special ID, Kung Fu Killer, and 14 Blades to name a few that I've watched.

Also enjoyed some films with Andy Lau, Wu Jing, and Tony Jaa like SPL II/aka Killzone 2 [Nothing to do with the PS games] (2015), Paradox (2017), Shock Wave (2017), and Firestorm (2013) to name a few.

They kind of got me in the mood to try playing Sleeping Dogs, but that's for another thread. As I know there's supposedly a movie in development with Donnie Yen as Wei Shen, but I feel like Wu Jing would look closer to the character.

Without reading any reviews I didn't have to be a magic user to predict what the negative ones would be centred around (diverse cast etc) but there's nothing wrong with this movie so far. It certainly seems to be better made than the original which was a bit haphazard in places.

Finished the movie and while critics complained that they softened the villains I felt like the opposite. For the last half hour when they were powered up they did seem like the evil bullies the script had hinted at throughout the movie. I wish more of the original cast were able to return to make it a proper sequel. The Blondie musical number wasn't quite as good as the one in the first movie but the Elton John number was very good. I felt like the cat was one of Thackery's descendants and knew more than he was letting on.

Now I'm going to try out that Muppets movie @Adamgp recommended as they're usually very reliable (with the possible exception of Muppets 2011).

Muppets was slick as ****. It was extraordinarily well produced. Hats off (or maybe that should be heads off, mwuhaha) to whichever of the talented lyricists managed to rhyme "macabre" with "candelabra". I don't know how they made all the puns work in Czech and Chinese.

There's nearly as much Hallowe'en stuff to watch as there is at Christmas. Wish I'd started before the 31st but I may be able to Force one more special in before the sun comes up.

I love Muppets Haunted Mansion. There's a sad tale to the song "Dancing in the Moonlight" that's featured in the show. It was written by Sherman Kelly in 1969. "On a trip to St. Croix in 1969, I was the first victim of a vicious St. Croix gang who eventually murdered 8 American tourists. At that time, I suffered multiple facial fractures and wounds and was left for dead. While I was recovering, I wrote "Dancin in the Moonlight" in which I envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyful celebration of life." He recorded it with his own band Boffalongo but it did nothing in the charts. His brother Wells Kelly was in a Canadian/French band called King Harvest. They recorded it and it became a worldwide hit. So out of this horrific attack came this joyful song that people still listen to today.

I finally got around to watching Wonder Woman 84. While it’s better than the reviews would have you believe, it’s not as good as the first movie. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine have real chemistry. And both Kristen Wiig as Barbera Minerva and Pedro Pascal as Max Lord are perfect in their roles. My biggest issue with it was [SPOILERS] When Diana wishes Steve Trevor to come back to her, he inhabits another man’s body. Steve unintentionally steals this unnamed man’s life. Although Diana eventually renounces her wish and the man is restored to his body and life, it’s never addressed.

I was very happy to see Kevin Conroy get to play a live action version of Batman in the Arrowverse version of “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”

I watched The Devil Bat tonight riffed by The Mads, Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu.

Thanks to TCM UK channel and the first UK broadcast in 35+ years, this for the foreseeable future...

#31DaysofHalloweenViewing Days 23 and 24: Fankenstein (1931) and Coco. Having watched Young Frankenstein probably more than 100 times, it was time to go back to the original, and see just how brilliant Mel Brooks' homage is. And yes, I watched Coco recently, but it's fun and one of Pixar's most visually stunning movies, so why not?
