When i was like young i was like" I wanna be a police officer", Couple years later "I wanna be in the Armed Forces" After that, at 14 "Boom Car Designer"

I wanted to be a traditional artist for Disney. Of course, then they shifted to computer-assisted animation, and more recently, things like this happened, so perhaps I made the right choice to not pursue that.

A terrible string of art teachers in high school killed off my love of drawing, and combined with a semester of learning HTML and web design in grade seven, I started becoming more interested in graphic design. So I still get to sketch, and I love the psychological aspect of this field.

An F1 driver. Then a fighter pilot, then an aerodynamics engineer for an F1 team and now a politician. I currently have the last one being my ultimate aim.

Had no idea when I was a kid. Right now I have some sort of idea of what I'm going to be. I plan on working in the IT field very soon and I'll see how my life goes from there.

When I was little I wanted to be a dump truck driver. Then I wanted to be a pilot, and then an architect. Now I want to fix clocks and watches for a living after an apprenticeship I had last summer. But I've got to figure out how to go to school for it and make ends meet.

 That reminds me, when I was little, just starting school in fact, I wanted to be a school bus driver. It was my dream job until I realized how terrible it was.

I wanted to follow my brother into F2 ModStocks. Not long after he retired from them (1976) they just seemed to die out. They now exist as an F2 heritage series.

Even at 61 he built and raced one at Buxton - Derbyshire this weekend just gone.

I wanted to be a master Chef (like Gordon Ramsay but without so much bad temper) until I was like ...13, then I wanted to be an architect and then ... I had no idea, and I still sort of don't.

*shrugs*

Honestly? A car showroom manager. I spent quite a lot of time in various showrooms when I was with my step-dad looking around for something new to carry the family about. So that might have played a part in why I wanted to work in such a place.

Growing up as a kid I wanted to be a mechanic. When I was about 5 my dad met a guy at a car show who introduced us to his car club, which we joined and showed with. This guy became a good friend of my dad's and he was a mechanic, and we used to spend time at his garage on weekends, which is what made me decide, around the age of 6, that I wanted to be a mechanic. I'd often ask to help out and whenever my dad worked on our car at home I was always eager to help him. I even had my own pair of overalls.

10 years on and I still want to be a mechanic. In fact I'm currently searching local companies to take me on for work experience soon, then next year I'm hoping to go on to do motor vehicle work in college. I'd like to get my qualifications from college and then apply to work for a race team, such as M-Sport in Cumbria who run the Ford teams in the WRC. On the side I'd like to run in ameteur rallycross or drifting, and perhaps work my way up from there.

First I wanted to be a firefighter, then a cop, then a fighter pilot. Had to forget about being a pilot because I'm colourblind, for a while I thought about joining the military but decided against that. Later I wanted to be a teacher but Ontario is a graveyard for young teachers' careers (roughly 16,000 new teachers a year for 900 job openings), and then I started getting interested in business from talking about it with my dad.

After all the fun and exciting ideas for jobs I had, I want to be an accountant and work into a management position

I wanted to be an automotive journalist, a road test editor. I got a Bachelors in Journalism, but ultimately decided during my college years that I didn't want to move to California or Michigan, and I've settled here in Wisconsin.

When I was younger I wanted to be single. Then I got a girl pregnant. Five years after I married her. And then again two years later. Now I just want to be an adequate dad.

Not great, just adequate.

I'm sorry? Or congrats?

Could you set out what made you decide and go for your decision and stick with it?

As I'm still floundering around a little bit at the present.

When I was growing up, I did wonder about becoming a professional swimmer (as I did it so much) but after some years I sort of fell out with the sport itself as it wasn't really something I enjoyed while being at the sharp end of the sport!

Before that, it was a racing driver (as was watching loads of F1 races) then decided to consider commentary. However my voice is *not* clear at all so that just went down the pan. Good dreams though.

Now, my dream job is just something that I enjoy and take pride in which also brings in enough cash for me to be content with my life. I am not talking about multi-millions, just a reasonable salary with reasonable cost of living.

Although I also have an alternative line of thinking of just devoting myself to something that would have big rewards.

Basically I had no idea what I wanted to do until I realized my love of cars was far to great to let it go. So I decided to get into a vocational school and take a trade that would have me become a technician. I initially wanted to keep working on cars a hobby than a job but eventually I sucked it up. Now I'm looking into classic car restoration.

I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist, and I still do. It's going to be quite difficult because I bloody hate sea animals, but if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

As far back as I can remember, I had always wanted to be a Paleontologist. This had been the dream of my childhood, I'll never forget how much I was interested in them, I still kind of am.

Dig dinosaurs out of the the earth.

Quick, you get the shovels, I'll bring the brushes!

I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist

After my love of Dinosaurs sort of dwindled I actually wanted to do this too. I wanted to specialise in Sharks. I had tons of books on them and was always looking at pictures, too. I don't really know why I wanted to do it though, I guess I thought that I'd always be on a boat out in the sea, and the sun would always be shining.

I don't think that's quite what it's like, though.

Older.
Now I want to be younger. :indiff:

Funny how that works. :sly:

I wanted to be a vet when I was a kid, then as I was getting into high school I got more into design and wanted to become an architect, I even did a course on it but there were no jobs going & I ended up in an office on minimum wage making cups of tea & answering the phone.

12 years later and I'm married (had my first anniversary earlier this month), I now organise conferences & event, mostly for RBS but for other companies too. I've actually just this week applied for a job doing the same as I do now but for a considerably higher pay to what I'm on do here's hoping. I don't regret where I am in my life now, my life's as good as its been in the last 3 years.

When I was younger?

I wanted to be a little bit taller and a baller. I wanted to be with a girl that looked good so I could call her. I also wanted a rabbit in a hat with a bat and a '64 Impala....but that's besides the point

Honestly though I wanted to be Indiana Jones and it stuck with me all the way through college. I ended up with a degree in archaeology and even went on a handful of digs, I was severely disappointed by the lack of Nazi's shooting at me though. I still do go on excavations from time to time though, but with moving to a new area I don't know how much I'll be able to do that.

-Race car driver (still the dream)
-Business related to automobiles and motorsports (most realistic dream)

When I was really young: Farmer, fireman, truck driver, soldier, maybe a few others that I've forgotten.

A little older: Engineer. Going to work with my father, the smell of oil and metal and machinery, travelling around the country and going on huge cold-storage ships, meeting sailors who spoke in funny accents and strange languages. I wish I could have been taken on as my fathers apprentice, but circumstances changed and prevented it.

Professional explorer/mountain guide. Going climbing with my family for the first time, feeling like I could achieve anything after reaching my first peak.

Blacksmith/farrier. Spending my summers on a farm I loved watching horses being shod, stakes being shaped, etc. I have done and still do quite a lot of smithing for clients, just a pity that farriery is so difficult to get into as a career.

Currently working as a self-employed engineer and part-time farmhand, which makes good money and is enjoyable enough, although I'm trying to figure out where I want to go next. I am glad that I went to a specialist engineering college, but that also means that I have no A-levels, so switching career is going to be expensive!

If you want to get into that field the best thing you can do is join a vocational school. Though I'm not sure if they have trade schools where you live, but that was the best decision I ever made in my life. Really helped me.

Because of that decision I'm now around all the cars I grew up admiring. Working on them, riding in them, driving them etc. I haven't looked back and I couldn't't be happier with that aspect of my life right now. Everything is going in the right direction for me all because I got into a school.

Even though I had a bit prior knowledge upon entering, I learned a lot these past 2 years. Even if it requires joining a small college that has a automotive program, joining is the best thing you can do to get started.

I sent this email to a friend of mine who was unsure whether to get into the automotive field just a few minutes ago. (Copied and pasted)

Well to be honest I always liked cars and since my dad has that truck he always worked on it when I was little. I always felt badass riding around with him. Going places they'd ask me who I was riding with and it was always dad. I loved the way it sounded and looked and it was big and beefy. I've even had a kid ask me if it was a monster truck.

Honestly it really depends. For me I had that same thought. I loved working on cars as a hobby and making it a job I thought would ruin it for me.

It couldn't be further from the opposite.

That said, that depends on what you want. Do you want to be a parts changer that works in a shop and fixes others cars for a living or do you want to focus on one area of expertise? Do you want to get into the modern world of cars or go back to the classics? Do you want to restore cars or resto-mod cars? Do you want to this do you want to that. That's what it comes down to. Do you want to build drift/drag/circuit cars? Street cars? etc etc.

Me personally I always loved muscle cars. High horsepower, obnoxiously loud V8s in fat ass cars that looked sweet. I wanted to get into engine building but as I've matured, I want to save these beasts and restore them to their former glory.

It's really about what you want. You can be stuck in a shop fixing others peoples cars or you can get out there and do your own thing. You have the power to make that choice. You have to start somewhere.

I think you should get into basic stuff right now and work your way up. It's extremely rewarding to show off a car; a piece of art rather that you built up.

The benefits out way the negatives in my opinion. I mean look at all the old cars I'm in contact with. Hell even the Cobra II today. You have to get out there and meet people. That's how you get places. Do you think I started automatically knowing people and chilling around these cars? Hell no! But I made the effort to get there and it's paying off and I'm doing what I love.

I couldn't be happier right now. Take this from a kid who had no idea what he wanted out of life until about a year and a half ago. Trust me on this bro.

It's like you don't even care about the Judge Danny show anymore.

Growing up? ;)

I'm a grown man and managed to accomplish this one.

Good point

I wanted to have a career in the video game industry, but somehow I grew out of that & instead switched to something in fine arts, maybe illustrator or something. And now, I'm not really sure what career I'll take up. I actually recall a time that I wanted to work in the field of astronomy since I thought outer space was so fascinating to me. Here and there archaeology comes to mind too as I recently started liking history. Then there's architect, chef... I could go on. I might as well get into racing & compete in the GT class!
