What do you do to keep focus when in the race?

As someone whose mind tends to wander (whether in a race or not), I though it would be interesting to ask, what do you do to keep your attention when racing.

I do listen to music, mostly j rock and talk to myself racing. This is so I know how far I am from someone, also to know when to pit.

I limit distractions.

- I put my phone in Do Not Disturb mode and place it screen down so I can't see any notifications or incoming calls.

- I always turn off music in racing games

- If my surroundings are loud, nearby construction for example, I use headphones on fairly loud volume, or, if I'm not bugging anyone, just crank my speakers way up. I like racing LOUD :D

- I also usually don't race online unless I'm home alone (or only one awake), so if my wife is home I stick to campaign stuff in case she would need my attention mid-race.

I think that's about it :P

I have a wandering mind too. I look around at the HUD. I look at the track map, pace times, whatever to keep my eyes on the screen. A lot of times if I don't immerse myself in the game I will miss brake points and make very easy but costly mistakes. Another thing that helps is a custom playlist of what I deem racing (often techno) tracks.

I also keep a custom playlist to race with.

I also have a wandering mind so I try to keep all my distractions useful and within the game. If the straight's long enough I would dart on all the stats the game gives me (Radar, speed on exit, tires, gap from other players, position, time, fuel. In that specific order)
In qualifying I also tend to look at my mid-corner speed usng peripheral vision

If it's a real life track I think about races I have watched there. Defending at brands I thought about BTCC races, Turkington defending Shedden etc etc

If not a real track then just previous races and how that race can help today's race.

It keeps my head occupied but in the race.

"Hmmmmm, shall I have beans or peas with my dinner tonight? Had beans the other night right enough, aye peas it...Aw FU!!!" THUD!

This is more or less how I lost first place on the last lap at a Brands race. Rumbling tummy=Wandering mind. Well it is with me.

I'd have gone with beans...

I don't really feel to be bored whatever circuit I race on. The races are short, even 10 laps fly by like 10 seconds, so yes I can only envy you if you have enough mind capacity to think about other than the racing around.
I always use earbuds, so they cut off the outside noise completely.
Yeah, locking wife is a good idea :) Recently I was racing at Brands Hatch GP and she passed between me and the tv, so I lost focus on braking point and went into the sand, lost 3 positons... d*mn it

keeping an eye on the next braking zone, checking radar/position/time gap to opposition, back to braking zone/radar/braking zone / apex and radar.

just about in that order, don't have a decent headset yet, so its now the standard earplug combined with a bluetooth headphone with a few dj sets.

On long straights I might keep looking behind me often or even hold it down to see if there are cars coming up behind or trying to draft me. In corners i always try to look at the sides of the track for any braking markers I can use. Usually this is enough to keep me distracted. I usually do a quick glance back before a hairpin to watch for divebombers too.

Sorry, no music for me while racing, even though I love GTS music tracks.
The other day I was playing till late night, being tired and lost concentration so I misread the lap counter and "finished" the race a lap earlier, went wide on turn 1 and hardly could keep 2nd place then. So, Bernie says, never play when you are tired

Can only race when kids are out to school or sleeping...
No music at all, have to listen to my car engine and tires all the time and other cars too... I turned off all music from the game.
Have 7.1 headphones which help a lot.
I use bumper cam so I don’t get distracted with the car interior or exterior,
Always try to focus on my horizon and rear mirror.
Lately I’ve been using B.B. and shifting during race so I still get a bit distracted when I have to look at the dash but with time it will be automatic.
In straights I’m constantly looking at the times and the track map to know if the guy behind is getting closer or I’m getting closer to the guy ahead.
With all that I have almost no time to enjoy the scenery or others liveries.... almost no time to race too...

When in Sport Mode: headphones, music OFF, racing sounds ON, driving line/cones ON, brake indicator ON, bumper cam w/radar.

Bernie also says "don't drink and drink. Yes unrelated but sounded cool.
