I've learned to race with distractions, sound very low, tv on next to it, kids arguing or fighting around me or listening to you tube, dog whining, and now the river flooding next to the house. It's now harder to race without distractions. If there's a large gap in front of me or I'm comfortably first I tend to lose focus and might completely miss a braking point :/

On initial D (yes my fave anime and always mentioning it, it's 🤬 ace) I like the idea of how Kozo Hoshino (stage 4) uses shouting and grunting to stay focused when racing. If he were to over concentrate. He drive without braking. I have done this a few times. I would say it works for me

For me it’s just mindfulness.

You can’t let your mind start to review your day or other things unrelated to racing.

For me I try to always come back to “where is my next braking point?”

Braking point, track in, apex, track out mirror check, braking point, track in etc

Now having said that, I must focus on every brake point(often not the cones), apex(often changing my apex depending on whether I'm defending or chasing) and bump in the road... If I don't, I'm screwed...
I don't have the natural talent, or, "feel" like some... my buddy, who is faster than me, couldn't tell you where he brake points are or why he used a late/early apex... it just works automatically for him... He can race fast and carry on a conversation...
Me... I have to think my entire way through or I'm in the weeds... sometimes I'm in the weeds even tho I'm certain I've done everything right. .

I envy those that need to ponder "now, how do I stay focused...?"

It could be like when people say to nervous speakers. Picture everyone in their underwear. Then you would see drivers, stewards and pit crew in their undercrackers.

To use the full width of the track and outline it I need all my senses, high volume also, at night headphones, listen to the revolution and the screeching of the wheels to know the traction you have, look at the fast lap, see if it's mine or I'm close, time difference with the car in front and behind, as the tires fall, gasoline consumption, see references of the car in front to stretch a little more and if while doing all that I do not make any mistake is already incredible .. ..

Like a lot of people said, I try to eliminate distractions. Only play when family isn't around, no music, and even turning off lights that aren't needed.

I usually have one of these 4 mindsets when racing:

1. Super focused - Aware of everything, obsessively watching the gaps to other cars, looking for braking points, checking fuel burn, etc.
2. Relaxed - Just focusing on being smooth and not really thinking.
3. Tense - Worried about everything, arms and shoulder muscles straining for no good reason, and leaning in my chair to keep on the track.
4. Enraged - Just got divebombed or punted and all I know is that I am going to catch and pass that jerk!

It's hard to lose focus when really mad, so if I see you on track I'll help you get into that Enraged mindset.

It's good to think while you run, and surely you do many more things that you're not aware of, the whiplash of a mischievous car that straightens the track again you can not think, if you think you're going, the reaction is automatic, not always is achieved but GT is benevolent even without assistance, running co manual change keeps you 90% concentrated too

The only thing i do is listening to music, got some great classic rocks playlists that i put on when i'm racing. The Spotify app integrated into ps4 that automatically mutes the in game music is EXCELLENT!

Other then that, i refuse myself to race when i'm tired, high, hungry, food coma and generally not in the mood for racing or not in my pristine condition

I also keep a custom playlist to race with.

I really need to see about doing this. Although, I enjoy the mix that comes with GTS.
I also keep down distractions. When my daughter is home I use my headphones so she cannot be distracted by the sounds of me playing on the PS4, regardless of the game.

Oddly enough, once I run enough laps, my mind can wander and it's no issue. Its all muscle memory.

I force myself to focus if I'm in a pack/in a battle for position. But if I'm on my own, I can space out a bit and hold my race pace
