OK, so I've been checking my second hand car lots alot lately looking for this particular car to drift with... Much to my excitement it shows up last night, so I buy it!!!

I fully upgrade it, and begin tuning it to drift... then the question hits me.... WHAT IS IT WITH ALL THE HYPE ABOUT THIS CAR???? It sucks!!! It's gear changes take soooo long, I can't get it to stop wheel spinning (the bad kind that makes you spin out)... Damn... I went to the settings depo about 10 times adjusting my LSD, power, suspension, gear ratios, wieght and I still couldn't drift it nicely...

So I pose the question, who else thinks that the only thing about this car, is the Hype Initial D gave it??? Cus I do!!!

There was a small cult following before Initial D came. Then Initial D came. All hype I say.

A cheap beginner's car, but thats all. Beginner as in the first car one could buy, before the Takumi tax came ;)

It's all hype!

The SS isn't even cheap. It's way too peaky for the gear ratios, which don't even mimic a Rollas real gear ratios. It's possible to do some ill drifts with it, but I have a tunned Levin that drifts way better with 100 less HP. The car is ALL hype. I only have an SS because it goes lower than the other Rollas, and the front bumper is abit lower, but it's still ugly as piss...

Let us not forget DT_C's wise words of wisdom about the Trueno...

Thank goodness, I thought I was gonna get flamed to bits on this thread, but it seems there are people who agree...

I too Tuned the Apex to drift and it runs like magic, but the SS..ooiii!!! hehe...

And I agree about the ugly part, not a pretty car...

Although, IRL, the sprinter and rollas are great drift cars because of their balance and affordablility for first time drifters...

I like the SS....I noticed it takes a different style as other cars....Just keep the revs high and you will have no problem....

YOU KNOW? I HATE THAT FREAKIN CAR, I HATE ALL THOSE LOOK-ALIKE CARS LIKE THAT TRUENO:lol: HEHE, so offcourse your not gonna get flamed, it's as ugly as hell, drifts like hell, feels like hell, races like hell. So no prob man, I hate it with all my hart:mad: But I cant drift a normal Trueno either lol:lol: I hate it. Just not my kinda style car.....

Anti-Trueno, love that picture btw:tup:

I like my regular Levin quite a bit, but the SS is pretty nasty. The powerband seems like it's 100 revs narrow or something, and don't get me started on the gear changes ;) But like DTC said, I keep it cause it's got a lower stance and bigger rims than the standard Levin/Trueno :dunce:

like some others said, it just takes more SKILL to drift it. Remember, a car is only as good as its driver.

that said, Initial D is teh suxor.

*looks behind him at stack of Initial D DVD's*

damnit.....

SKILL, as you put it, I got!!! And yeah, I did get it it to drift fine, but it's still a horrible machine to drive and drift.... AND, it looks horrible... hehe...

The guy's first car was ae86, it's just sentimental... makes him feel young, said it himself...

GOOD car nevertheless, overated by the crowd.

In video games, the Trueno is ONLY popular because of Initial D. Quite frankly I find it rather pitiful when people obsess over something like that. Oh well.

It's a cute car, but it doesn't suit my drving style in GT4. I'd like one IRL, but there's the Tak tax (the people driving prices up don't know his REAL name) that makes it cost $10k instead of $.8k.

I didn't even know about Initial D until a few months ago; I drove an 86 in NFSU2 and GT3 without even knowing that it was a cult car.

If GT4 was online I would show you what the SS is all about! There is no reason to bash a car because you havent found the right setup. DKING said it best "Keep the revs up"
the same apply's to FD's & FC's. I'm not trying to be an ass

Keep drifting

Well Swift, lets assume you've grown up with Initial D, and always felt something for the SS, you would have the same reason to love the car as Tsuchiya (or something).

:D ME<<<WISE ASS;):P

But that still doesn't prevent me from hating the car more than in any other car in the game:yuck:

I've always been fond of the Levin and Trueno, since way back before I'd even heard of Initial D. It's always a good laugh to see one in real life taking down bigger cars on the track, I'll post some pics of 86 racing cars I took last summer at the track. AE86's were popular because they were cheap, light and RWD. Nowdays they're way to expensive and you can get better bang for your buck from plenty of more modern Japanese peformance cars.

The SS Trueno goes pretty well in my opinion, the engine is purely a racing engine and has to be treated as such and trying to drive it like a normal 86 doesn't work.

Wow we should change the thread name to ae86 hater thread lol j/k,

but i like the car but before initial d i always like the underdogs, but yea to many people are like in a cult following with it i was watching forumula d and they did a whole segment on that car. what alot of d1 drivers call it "the poor mans drifting car"

and thats what it is but its and ok car in the game, and a good car in real life

IMHO the Trueno is misrepresented in the game. It's a really fun, speedy, lightfooted little car to drive in real life but in GT4 it drives a lot heavier and understeers much more. The AE86 is real back-happy little car, hell, I've caught myself drifting my uncle's 86 without thinking around some corners. It's that easy to drift in it. But in GT4...ugh. I keep saying, there is way too much understeer in GT4.

In truth, the Trueno is the car that taught me to control a drift in GT4. It's a very good Newbie Trainer. But like this guy said at my Initial D World hangout, the Trueno is a good car, it's just in to hate the thing like it's in to hate anime, Starbucks, Walmart, Linkin Park, and so on.

Hating anime is very much "cool" in the gamer-circles at the moment and the car-nut circles in general. Much in the way that it's "cool" to hate punk-rock and Starbucks coffee. Most people who bash Initial D have never seen it or read it.

On top of that, competition-drifting really is just about seeing who can get the most sideways and stay that way the longest, whereas Initial D drifting is about using drift techniques to minimize the amount of speed shed during a turn, and most car-nut circles will yell all day long about how in real life there is absolutely no practical racing-application for drifting. Actually it's usually just the wannabes who do that, people who are really into the sport (read, the people who have actually been capable of providing the correct advice or information I've asked of them) are generally more open to and forgiving of outsiders, even if they think what they're (the outsiders) saying is silly.

I don't know that I believe that it is, though, I think it depends on the particular corner in question. I could easily see drifting being a faster way through hairpins or consecutive corners of certain shapes. But this is a tangent now...

Short version: you say why they have to hate is beyond you, so the reason they hate is usually "because all the cool kids are hating." Now it's not beyond anyone.

ahaha those forums are so funny i remember i posted a vid there and then people are all that's not good enough you have to be more sideways i was like any more sideways and i would go around the turn like at 30 mph lol

Hmmm what do I think................

OMG! I WANT TO BE LIKE TAKUMI!! ::imitates drift driving::

OK pretending all done. ::goes back to drifting Vipers and high end sports cars that pwn the AE86::

Honestly, like all you guys said, its because the Hype of Initial D and maybe because the Drift King; Keiichi Tsuchiya, drives and drifts a Hachi.

Bleh, people should look into the Vipers, Supras, and all them higher performance cars instead of the old common Trueno/Levin. Really driftin is all about style, excitement, and FUN. What fun is it to drift a car that can be tuned up to 300+hp ((sorry if mistaken)). FCs and all those other higher performance cars are much fun due to the fact they give the driver thrill due to their high ass torque and fast drift entry/exit speeds.

HACHI-ROKUs ARE GETTING OLD!!! STOP ADIMIRING TAKUMI AND LOOK AT BUNTA!

Captain Trips
it's just in to hate the thing like it's in to hate anime, Starbucks, Walmart, Linkin Park, and so on.

Noone saying it's hated(apart from Gt4-Fan:lol:). It's just over represented to the point where it's stupid, and liking it makes you look like a tool. And noone wants to be a tool right?

Ok, let's get this straight right now. I like initial D. I have in my possesion every episode that I know about. It's a LOT of fun to watch. But guess what, just like any other good anime/movie, that's where it STOPS. Some of us just have a problem leaving the anime/manga on the screen/page.

OK I'll clear something up here... The reason so many people drift the AE86 in real life is because it's a VERY well balanced FR car... The balance on this car is such that it's as if Toyota built this car with drifting in mind, which is why Captain Trips finds it so easy to drift his uncles...

My problem comes in game where it just dissappoints... I counted last night, it takes roughly 1-2 seconds to change gears, I mean cummon!!! I had the Corolla model before the AE86 as my first car and I didn't take near that long when shifting through the gears...

Ok, it seems some of you are jumping back in forth between how you think a real AE86 engine response should be, and the AE86 Shigeno version feels in GT4... First off, the Shigeno version has a completely different engine designed for racing (Group A), with a 10k+ redline... Different transmission as well... A real AE86 is definitely NOT going to act at all like the AE86 Trueno SS... Don't compare them... Compare the normal stock AE86 Trueno against a real Trueno, if anything...

That said, I watch Initial D... It's entertaining... However, I realise that it is a hyper-realistic show... Over the top, and not fully based in reality... Fun to watch, but not a good idea to base anything off of...

Some people just get out of hand with their "fanboyism", and end up sounding like little girls on an Insync forum...

;)

^I agree with Delphic. I don't think anyone here can compare the SS Trueno in the game to one IRL, or any other Trueno anywhere. Why? I don't think anyone here owns or driven a Trueno that has been modified anywhere near like it. The chance of getting an engine like that or making one is almost impossible(a lot of research and connections can make the 10,000RPM attainable). The search of finding the right suspension, the complete stripping down and spot welding of the body/chassis, choice of transmission and differential, etc., that adds up for one priceless ride. The SS is a track/circuit car, I'll choose that to run in a race than some other car in the same category. Its balance is what makes it so sought after, it's not meant to be drift only. I think it sucks how those that are selling their Corollas IRL want so much because of some anime they found out about. They never knew what they had to begin with, and that's a d*** shame.

Some things to read for those interested and know (or don't know) what the AE86 is and tuning

Firstly, 300hp is plenty in a light, small car. Good drifting is about control not just power. What's the fun of a car that all it needs to require to slide is hitting the throttle? In all honesty I'd rather have an 86 than a Viper, any day. 8.4 litres of boat anchor doesn't seem like fun to me.

Also, what's with this Hachi-roku crap? I don't see people calling 180sxs by whatever 180 is in Japanese. Seems like some Initial D fanboy thing to me. I love 86s along with other cool old Toyotas (not KE series though, nothing cool about them) but I'd never be dorky/fanboy enough to go round calling them hachi-rokus, it sounds clumsy and stupid. At the end of the day I'd take an AE86 Corolla GT over a Levin/Trueno :)

yeah sure the car drifts like crap in GT4. Big deal.

Im a fan of the 86, and its underpowered 4A-GE ;).. There must be something good about them if there is as many running around these days as there were when they were produced.

Sure Initial D provoked some of the attention, but why would someone keep a car because it drifts well in a cartoon. If they do, then there obviously stupid. and therefore its not the car's fault.

Im also a fan of Inital D. Its good fun to watch, but i dont base my car likes or hates around it.

For the real 86 Enthuisiasts that actually know what there on about, good for them..And its a great car... and not all of the 86's attention is based around drift. they are ofcoarse raced aswell.

I HATE IT!!!!!!! :dunce: :yuck:  :ouch: :banghead:

Lolz;)

Edit: BTW, the first picture from mad murphy shows how a Trueno is gonna get lapped in one second lmao:lol::crazy::dopey:

;)J/K

I like the car originally... however after thousands of comments like "AE86 IZ TEH DORIFTO MACHINEZZZ!!!" I'm sick of it, every time I look at the boxy thing, I want to puke.
