What is the best track to test cars?

It depends on what you want to use the car for, so it's pretty hard to answer that question per se.
Now, personally, I use the Nordschleife. I know that track inside out, and while it's hard to pull of laps that are very consistent, so that you can notice small changes on the car affecting your lap time, it does give a lot of feedback on how the car behaves.

Personally, I tune the car on the 'Ring until it feels right. Once I've got the feeling down, I might look at some minor details on tracks that are closer to what I want to use the car for.

That said, I focus on the Nordschleife so much that I hardly care about how my cars perform on other tracks...

Oh, how I miss Midfield Raceway...

Anyway, lately I've been testing just about stock regular cars(just about, meaning the only upgrade I do is I equip Sports Soft tires) on the Autumn Ring. Not the mini version, the longer one. Then I proceed to do one lap on the Top Gear track, and record the lap times. I find it fun comparing cars' lap times there, just like the show.

When I say regular stock cars, I mean cars like the 2010 Camaro SS, Audi TTS Coupe '09, BMW M3 Coupe '07, etc. Cars similar to the ones they use in the show.

What I would do is just start a practice run there, and drive til I get to the starting line, and start from a stop. I would do one lap, and one lap only, unless I would royally mess up or something. I sort of like to think I do a mixture of the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, and how the Stig drives. So even if I would spin out a bit, or slide around a bit through the different sections, I still keep going, unless I really just slide out.

Then I would record the lap time, and save the replay, and maybe eventually record it somehow and make a sort of mini car testing video...

Nurburgring and Cape Ring for handling tuning and setup. Indy Speedway and Fuji for high-speed aero and stability testing. And a custom Mt. Aso themed track really tests the bumps and transmission climbing hills.

My picks:

Cape Ring Inside (2.48km length, perfect for testing lateral grip and weight transfert for car beetween 150 to 400hp)

Cape Ring Periphery (Perfect for car of 500hp to 700hp) The 'C**K ring' as i like to call it is good to reveal grip and stability problems for high speed cornering over 1.5g

I use Nurburgring nordshlefer to validate the car after.

Trial Mountain is pretty good too, but i dont use it for primary setting. Tuning validation only.

Personally, i think Cape ring in any variance is the best track for curves layout, it have everyting from tight corners, esses, high speed corner and straights. I personnaly think that this one is gonna be the next great circuit like Grand valley or Midfeild.

Tsukuba, short and sweet, mainly test my light cars here like Caterham, ZZ-S. nice to do a few quick laps as standard, like said very consistent track. Very good to see times coming down and the differences entering and coming out of corners. has Hard braking U tuns, High speed corners, maybe a little smooth but most tracks on GT are.

Caterham loves it, does average 56 second laps, was great fun hammering the scuderia and tweaking it to get close to that with near standard power.

Cape ring I hate it but can see why it makes a good test track.

Nurb as good as it is it's to long, even in a standard car my laps are not consistent enough to see if the little tweaks are having the desired effects.

Deep Forest for GT1-4.
Now, Trial Mountain, Cape Ring Periphery (no boring middle bit), and the Nurbschleife.
Except I find myself worried less about lap times now than I used to. If a car feels quick, and is fun to drive, thats all the set-up it needs! But the occasional tweak here and there keeps me pointed in the right direction.

Le Sarthe WITH Chicanes, and Deep Forest. I usually do my LMP Cars at Monza, L Sarthe is where I use my Tuned cars, and almost everything else, and Deep Forest for Low-end Race cars like the 320i Touring

I like High Speed Ring Reverse because it has plenty of straights and banked turns to give me an idea of the speed and acceleration of my car with a few turns thrown in to give me a vibe of my car's handling. To me, the less variables (like tons of turns that are tough to do consistently every time) there are, the more it can truly be a test track for the car. I can lay down 5 or more laps in a row on that track within a half second of each other. THAT's how you know if your car is set up/tuned properly. These guys that test on the Ring baffle me.....I don't know how you can lay down consistent laps +/- a half second to truly test your car.....not your driving.

Personally I use the Indy road course. It has the best of both worlds. It has a nice long straight for testing top speeds and drag. Turns for cornering abilities and some really good s turns for drift practicing.

I usually take a car out on multiple tracks to shake it loose and see what it does.

Laguna Seca serves multiple purposes for seeing how a car responds. Indy because it is so consistent. Works better for higher speeds (obviously). Tokyo 246 is a great track to push a car on.

Those are my 3 favorites probably. I also like Cape Ring, Rome Circuit, High Speed Ring and Monza a lot.

Tsukuba Circuit. The corners are relatively flat, and sharp. Meaning if you can tune a car to rail them your car will handle amazing on courses with banked turns and much easier turns.

the problem with using the the ring is that its too fast and straight, it doesnt relate well to most of the other tracks in the world.

its a good test if you want your tuning a long track car though

I'd love to see Apricot Hill in GT5 again, it was my testing course before. Somehow I was addicted to it since GT2, loved the 200km endurance race there.

As it is not in the game, I use Grand Valley and sometimes Trial mountain. If I'm happy with the car there, I take it to the ring for a few laps as a final test

Nordschleife and the full Cape Ring would be good test tracks if they weren't so long. I prefer Deep Forest or the Top Gear Test Track. If I'm looking to test top end I go with either Sarthe or Special Route 7.

I use two different tracks,
Monza (No Chicane), its a wide open throttle track for the majority, so power is King here, and has some nice corners that require high speed balance.

Autumn Ring, its tight and has lots of direction changes, so handling is what this course if for.

I find these two are a good combination and allow you to test the varying abilities of a car that you might not get over a single course.

Check out this google doc for lap times that people have added.

Which would be the best track to test the total performance of a car?

I'm thinking maybe Fuji, long straight, some quick corners, the slow/tight in field section.

Any other ideas?

I like Trial Mountain.... it may not be the most demanding, but it flows and has some fast and slow corners.

PS... because it has a sense of rhythm, I'm less likely to make mistakes, which in turn means I'm giving the cars a more equal chance to show their potential.... if you see what I mean!

I test all my cars on trial mountain.
There is a straight on that and it gives you a fair sense of how fast your car can go and the corners tell you all the characteristics of the car, it's essentially the track where I tune and tweak my cars.
