What is the best way to practice?

About me:
I would say I'm a mid-range sim racer.
I've been playing racing games for years and have had a steering wheel setup for a few years now. I play GT(7), Forza (Motorsport),F1 (24), WRC, Assetto Corsa, ACC or even Grid and PJ Cars.
In GT7 I got all the licenses, missions and track experiences to Gold.

I've studied a lot about car technology (suspension, gears, differentials, etc.) and racing techniques.
(trail braking, racing line, weight balance)

So I know a lot about the theory. And this has also made me better over the last few years.

Now I've had the feeling for a long time that I'm not getting any further.
I think this is mainly because I know the theory well, but the implementation is not yet so good 😅. How do you train these things?
How do you recognize your mistakes, successes and progress?

I look forward to learning from your experiences.

In CE I use the demo ghost, in time trials I use a ghost close to the gold time, and change for a faster if needed.

In some extreme cases, I download a video from the replay I want to emulate, a video of my best lap, and I play them in sync using Kinovea, and I slow down or pause video to compare both, to check where and when the guy in the replay I study is braking, releasing brakes, trail-braking, throttlind, iddling...

I like to think I'm a decent driver.

Like you I have got gold on all Licences, Circuit Experiences and Missions.

Generally in weekly time trials I will only manage silver, unless I have the time to have a real crack at it and I manage gold (Gr. 3 at Daytona being a great example).

This past week I managed to get my DR up to B for the Nations Cup and try to keep my SR at S or A (minimum).

What I've done is joined an online league for the region I live (Australia) and they do practice sessions each Monday night for the Tuesday night race (Gr. 3 League).

In those sessions it is led by an A+ driver who will do a lap showing you the specifics about the track with regards to braking points and how to navigate it. Then will do a full lap showing you. After that we do qualifying and a full race where we keep the party chat open so you can ask for advice on certain aspects.

What I discovered last week was that whilst I can be quick during qualifying, when it gets to racing I kind of fall apart.

Also my tyre management is atrocious. I could only manage 10 laps of HSR with the mediums on, whilst the pro guys could stretch them over 20. They gave me a few tips and I tried to implement them and managed to get them out to 14 laps on the next stint. Unfortunately I buggered it up completely on Tuesday nights race.

We also do a sprint series on Wednesday nights which involves 2 races where everyone is mixed (Gr. 3 league is split into 4 Divisions - Pro, Pro Am, Development Am and Development Clubman) and due to there being no strategy involved and everyone driving the same vehicle, Honda Civic Type R (EK) Touring Car, I've found myself keeping pace with alot of the pro guys until I inevitably make a mistake.

I do not see anything about your online racing experience on GT7 i think that is where you need to pay the most attention is SPORT MODE.
As quoted from Han Solo "Good against remotes is one thing. Good against the living, that's something else."

Thank you for your input.

@jrbabbitt: my online statistics are currently: B/S
But I don't race that much in the
sport mode.
Currently I have:
38 races
7 clean races
3 Fast Laps
1 pole position
2 Victories
12 Top5 Finish

19 Gold Finishes
36 Silver Finishes
17 Bronze Finishes

Often I just drive qualifying in the Dayli Races, sometimes in lobbies with friends and also often just with any car for me Time Trial.

In the qualifying of the Dayli Races I miss 2-4 seconds on the top on normal long tracks. Yes, depending on the track. Of course it's less on short tracks and a bit more on very long ones. 😅

@Thorson1987
A group like that would be great, of course. But at the moment I don't have the time to actively pursue it.

@Lomic
Yes, I also use the Ghosts, but I think the idea of layering videos is great.

The topic of car balance when
braking and cornering is something I'm very interested in at the moment. In reality, I can feel it relatively well with my body. I really miss that in sim racing. How do you compensate for this? Visual perception, or simply training with a specific car?

I have the problem that I love to drive lots of different cars.
cars. Would it be better to limit yourself to just 1 or 2?

The Path to Mastery in Samurai Philosophy

1️⃣ Learn the Technique – First, you train rigorously, repeating forms, strikes, and discipline until the technique is perfectly ingrained.

2️⃣ Forget the Technique – Once the technique becomes second nature, the next step is to step away from the sword and engage in something completely different—gardening, poetry, painting, or another art.

3️⃣ Return to the Sword with a New Mindset – When you return, you no longer think about technique—you simply act, letting instinct and deep knowledge flow effortlessly.

This process is sometimes called "mushin no shin" (無心の心)"mind without mind" or "no-mind." The goal is to detach from conscious effort and let skill emerge naturally and spontaneously.
