I just got my drivers license the other day and now my parents are going to buy me a used car for under $10,000 CAD. I was planning on buying a Nissan 240SX SE or a Honda CRX but its really hard to find one with low kilometers in my area. My friend suggested i buy a 1999/2000 Honda Civic DX hatchback. My first car is gonna to be automatic transmission so i wont be doing any serious performance tweaks to it. I'll probably just put in a new stereo system, muffler, bodykit, spoiler, and lowering springs. What japanese car do you guys think i should get?

I'd go for the nissan, it already looks cool, you dont need a body kit for that, civics imo are ugly, i'd never get a civic...1.6L......BUZZ bUZZ!!!!

Insurance is killer on an automatic CRX/Civic/240SX?! Are you joking?

Actually, I checked them out not long ago and I got quoted at almost $450 a month for the new Civic Si and for the SX.

The CRX was about $250-or $300 if I can remember correctly.

If it his first car and he is young then yes they will be expensive.

when I sell my car, I'm gonna get a 1994 VOLVO 850 Turbo!!! Oh yeah!!! 8500$ cnd, 2.3L turbo = 220hp!! traction control, sport suspension, leather seats, 17'rims, cant get much better than that!!!! lol...my love for volvos........:D

What are the advantages in narrowing your choices down to only japanese autos?

Ah.. Toyota MR2 was one of my first choices too, but again, so hard to find one with low kilometers. Less than 100,000 km is my target.

The best car ever made.

You think I'm kidding but I'm not.

What country are you in?
A 249 SX will be hard to find. Especially one with low miles.
A $10,000 Civic, will indeed be about 3-4 years old. Also, due to their popularity as tuner cars, a lot of them will have been abused to some extent. Caveat Emptor.

For a first car, you can get a low mileage V-6 Mustang, A low mileage Cavalier, Focus, or Escort. Granted, none of these are the prettiest thing going, but If you shop around an Escort will run about $5,000. If your parents let you have the other $5,000 you can mod up quite a bit.

Another option is an Eclipse. Popular as tuner cars, but not usually a first choice, so prices are a bit lower.

I know, Ford is not what's on your mind. But, if you're only gonna thrash it. And let's face it that's what happens to most "first cars". Start with one you won't mind killing.

Im in Canada. I think i might just get a '99 civic dx hatchback. Easy to find a good stock one with low miles, i heard it has good fuel efficiency too. My only concern is that it only has like 100 horsepower.

In that case, all my recommendations stand. If you were in the UK, I'd be fresh out of ideas. But most of the cars you have in Canada, are available here in the US.

i dont think american cars would suite me since im asian. its rare to see an asian guy/girl in an american car where i live lol.

So, break out of the mold man. If you're 16 and have your own car, who cares about its country of origin?
Anyone who gives you crap is prolly still walking!
or borrowing the "mom-mobile"

Accords rule. Not only are the larger and more comfortable than a civic, they're faster too. a fully loaded 4 door automatic 4 cyl. Accord can take a manual civic easy. 2.2L on the 95 EX VTEC or just bump up to the V6.

That's in Canadian $, though, right? Still, though, that's a lot. Full coverage for me on my S2000 at 16 w/no tickets was under $400/month. All of the Z28's, and Trans Am's I've had were also less than $400/month. Hell, I got a quote for a 590hp single turbo Supra, and it was only $500/month for full coverage.

Either way insurance blows deez nuts.

Yeah, Canadian $$.

Also a 98 GS-R was close to $450 bones to insure too.

I would go with something fairly cheap; cheap to fix, and cheap to insure.

It's your first car, you are gonna ride the **** outta it and drive it into the ground. Just get a beater and save some $ for a better car in the future.

*edit* $400 -$500 isn't much for me and you Josh, but some people are no-where near as fortunate as us and $500 bucks JUST for insurance every month simply can be too much.

I dunno, up to him really, but lik I said he will prolly drive the car 'till it won't run anymor, so save for when you are older and insurance is cheaper and get something better.

thats why you should go with the volvo!! for under 10 grand cnd you can get a decent cond car (93-95) 220hp!! you cat argue with that, i agree with the person who said break out of the mold, an asian in a volvo!! its got like a 0-60 of the high 7s in auto, thats fast, it would spank all the little civics and stuff, but then again I love volvos...so dont listen to me:D

I think you hit the nail on the head there. If he only has 10,000 to buy a car then he definatley doesn't want a 500/month insurance payment. Hmmm.. I wonder What insurance will run me on the GTR?

I just caught this and I have to say it is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard in a long time.

if i had to get a used and my first car it would have to be... a used MR2.

the cars I wanted were 3000GT VR4, MR2 turbo, toyota supra turbo, Lexus ES300, and skyline GTR, I got none of those. I'm looking at a BMW M3 right now. Gotta see how much he wants for it though.

92 Talon/Eclipse... you can get them anywhere from $2,000-$4,000.. That leaves plenty left over for mods.. put $2,000 into it with REAL performance mods and you have a 12 second car.

I dunno my freind had a 90 eclipse and he had nothing but trouble everything from mechanical to electrical, it ended up costing more to fix it than he paid for the car. So if you get one make sure to have it checked out. Especially since alot of those cars have high milage and eclipse/talon engines are high maintenance from what I hear.

I think your friend had a rare case of bad luck. I had a 90 Laser Turbo with 210,000 miles on it. Only probelems it had were from shotty repairs from the last owner.... what a moron i might add. The motor still pulled hard, didnt smoke, would start up stoutly every morning.

And as TSiAWD said, few grand in mods and you got your self a rocket.

It may be a little bit higher but the old Talons, Eclipses, and Lasers had automatic seat belts so that helps insurance.

I dont have a very good driving record by any means and I live in colorado which is by my understanding one of the more expsensive states to get car insurance in. I got a quote for my 90 Laser at 110 a month for liability....... full coverage...... i have no clue.

And probably $3,402 a month or liability for me. :P Lucky 🤬 :D

But I would go with Tofu and TSi on the first generation DSMs. Fast, plenty of room for modifications, and they come in either front-wheel/all-wheel drive, which seem safer than rear-wheel drive cars, for a begginer that is (no offense to you driving skill).

If I could go back, I might consider one instead of the Subaru... but... I don't know. I love my Subaru. :D Could always go with an old Impreza L, and with some time and cash and finding correct wiring diagrams and harnesses, throw a WRX engine in there. 👍
