WARNING: Another long and detailed thread!
This thread is for all to discuss what championships you think should return to GT5. Gran Turismo has been around for ten years. And through those ten years, GT gamers have been introduced to a variety of challenges, championships, endurances, and many more special races. Only our Gran Turismo veterans would know about just about every race and every championship. I'm proud to consider myself a Gran Turismo veteran having acheived at least 75% completion in all major Gran Turismo titles inclding beating all of Gran Turismo 1's races. Now it's time to take a look back to give you some perspective as to what championships and endurances you'd like to see return. I'm even willing to throw in whatever kinds of specific races you'd like to see. Now for the endurances, the endurance races are fine only as long as we'll be sure we can get to race them in GT5. So I'm not sure about if we'll see the return of (for example) the endurance race around Rome Circuit if it's not announced for GT5. This thread is not a copy of "The Road to the Gran Turismo World Championship." Instead, it is a look at championship series and endurances you'd love to see return to GT5 on this 10th Anniversary of the series. The closest thread similar to this topic was "What Race Series Would You Like to See in GT5?" by TheCracker. Only my thread is about past championships and series would you like to see return and not what new championships you'd want to see.
So let's do this! Now before we begin, I'd like to note that there are some classic championship series and events that are pretty much likely to show up in GT5. And those include the following:
--- Official Event Locks ---
* Sunday Cup
* Clubman Cup
* Gran Turismo Cup
* Gran Turismo World Championship
--- Special Event Locks ---
* Front/FWD races
* Front/RWD races
* Mid/RWD races
* 4WD races
* Grand Valley 300km
* Dream Car Championship
* Gran Turismo All-Stars
* Polyphony Digital Cup
* Spider and Roadster
* Lightweight Car Races
* Japanese/American/European Championships
* All Japan GT Championship and German Touring Car Championship
--- In Perspective: GT1's Races ---
Gran Turismo started it all in 1997 and 1998. Every race (except for the Spot Races and endurances) was its own championship. Once you had the license and the car needed for the event, it was just about entering the events. There were absolutely no races devoted to a single make or a single car within a make. The following were the many races GT1 had:
--- Official Events ---
Sunday Cup
Clubman Cup
Gran Turismo Cup
Gran Turismo World Championship
--- Special Events ---
* FF Cars
* FR Cars
* 4WD Cars
* Lightweight
* US vs. Japan
* Japan vs. UK
* US vs. UK
* Megaspeed
* Normal Car
* Tuned Car
* Grand Valley 300km
* Special Stage Route 11 All-Night 1
* Special Stage Route 11 All-Night 2
* (a special mode once you complete GT1)
This was just the very beginning for a game that was going to be much larger in future iterations.
--- In Perspective: GT2's Races ---
Gran Turismo 2 featured a wider variety of races even featuring One-Make Races. And for the first time, GT players could race in events without needing a license. This is for those who just can't wait to pick up the DualShock and go racing. The Gran Turismo League was the official race series. This series introduced cars from Germany, Italy, and France while broadening the range of cars for three existing nationalities of car in the GT series. In addition, rally races were added as well as four more endurance races than GT1 had. Simply put, this GT was bigger and more expansive than GT1. Surprisingly, only three official championship series are in GT2. This was the first GT to include a few new races that would become mainstays of the Gran Turismo universe- the normally-aspirated car races, the turbo races, and more importantly, the Gran Turismo All-Stars. One-Make Races would all take place on random race tracks requiring either normal cars or normal and racing cars. That would all change starting in GT3 and much more in-depth in GT4. This was also the debut of races divided among decades of cars including a new class devoted to classic and vintage cars. Here are the races other than the One-Make Races:
--- Official Races ---
* Japan Nationals
* French Nationals
* Italian Nationals
* US Nationals
* UK Nationals
* German Nationals
* Euro League
* Pacific League
* Gran Turismo World League
--- Special Races ---
* Sunday Cup
* Clubman Cup
* FF Challenge
* FR Challenge
* Mid-Engine Challenge
* 4WD Challenge
* Light-weight "K" Cup
* Luxury Sedan Cup
* Convertible Car World
* Compact Car World Cup
* Muscle Cup
* Historic Car Cup
* Station Wagon Cup
* Grand Touring Car Trophy
* 80s' Sports Car Cup
* Pure Sports Car Cup
* Tuned NA Car No.1 Cup
* Tuned Turbo Car No.1 Cup
* Gran Turismo All Stars
* Super Touring Trophy
* GT 300 Championship
* GT 500 Championship
--- Rally Events ---
(NOTE: Whether or not some of these return will depend on if we get them in GT5)
* Green Forest Roadway
* Smokey Mountain South
* Smokey Mountain North <<< personal favorite
* Tahiti Maze
* Tahiti Dirt R3
* Pikes Peak Downhill
* Pikes Peak Hill Climb
* Smokey Mt.North Reverse
* Tahiti Dirt R3 Reverse
--- Endurance Races ---
(NOTE: Whether or not some of these return will depend on if we get them in GT5)
* Laguna Seca 200 Miles
* Grand Valley 300 km
* Rome Circuit 2 Hours <<< "Millenium in Rome"
* Apricot Hill 200 km
* Trial Mountain 30 Laps
* Seattle Circuit 100 Miles
* S.S. Route All-Night
While I've hated GT2 later, there is one thing I'll admit for sure- the special events have the deepest amount of races for a broader variety of vehicles than even future GTs would allow. Where else could you competitively race a luxury car against others? I'd even welcome the challenge of racing a Bentley Continental GT (granted we Bentley returns with more cars in GT5) against a BMW 7-Series car or the Audi RS6 Sedan.
--- In Perspective: GT3's Races ---
While Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec lacked in the car count department from GT2, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec featured almost every make from GT2 including the debut of Gillet and Tickford. Events were sorted out according to difficulty level. Gran Turismo 3 lacked the diversity of events GT2 had, but made up for it with a variety of different races including newer championships and series. The only significant series that debuted were the Dream Car Championship and the Polyphony Digital Cup. Also significant was the series' first wet courses. While dynamic weather wasn't made available for every track, the challenge of wet racing was now possible for the first time in the series. This was the first GT in which you could compete in rally events without needing a rally car. Evidence was apparent when some of the license tests took place on the only wet course in the game- Special Stage Route 5. Other series would follow including Like the Wind and the infinitely more challenging Formula GT series. This game also includes the first-ever time an endurance race takes place around an oval. The different domestic championships and series would reappear in GT4 and may potentially be in GT5 as well.

These events would keep you busy despite the fact that the game doesn't have lots of One-Make Races. Race variety has mostly lacked, but hasn't lacked too much to be disappointments compared to GT2.
--- In Perspective: GT4's Events ---
A variety of firsts have come about for Gran Turismo 4. The most recent full GT game is the biggest yet with a massive variety of races and championships. Some of which last longer to even much longer than GT's past. Official events were now spread across three different levels of difficulty while not being like GT3 as far as the same series existing in other championships. Endurance races are now longer than ever, lasting anywhere between 90 minutes to 24 hours. You can thankfully use B-Spec to compete in the much longer races if you lack time to complete them. This is the first-ever Gran Turismo in which you don't need an International license or Super License to take part in an endurance. However, you need to have at least 25% of the game complete in order to race in the Endurance events.
While Gran Turismo 3 debuted nationality-specific championships, GT4 takes the concept even further with events for various nationalities of car. Each of those national events have lots of events to take part in ranging from championships to series races. One-Make Races returned and are all much more intense. Gran Turismo 4 debuted performance pickup trucks as well as an all-truck series. Proper tuner cars were also featured for the first time as they got their own championship. Beginners who wanted to race right away can do so without having to get a license. Only Spider and Roadster require a license.
A new "Extreme" class of events challenge the truest of champions in Gran Turismo. Victory in the Pro leagues will take you to newer heights as the game's most challenging races await you in the Extreme class. For the first time in GT history, you can freely compete in Family Cup events where you can enjoy a casual race in GT Mode to go out and casually race cars around a variety of tracks.
Also new is the first endurance-type championship series called "1,000 Miles!" This championship is in the European events, but a European car isn't required for the event. Don't be surprised if you see a Sting Ray Corvette race in this classic car (up to 1970) race.
This GT debuted many new nationalities of car including the debuts of Holden and FPV. This marked the debut of Spain's SEAT, the Netherlands' Spyker, the Swedish Volvo, and the Korea Republic's Hyundai and Proto Motors. The international appeal of GT has never been better. Same goes for the variety of races and race events.
On top of this, this is the first GT to feature true tarmac rallies as opposed to all dirt rallies. It was also the debut of snow rallies. One needs only race dirt and snow to know how much different racing on the two surfaces is.

Biggest GT yet with all kinds of race events.
So you now have a little refresher of all GT events even if you've never played any non-PS2 GT games. What would you like to see return for Gran Turismo 5? Please remember that this has to do with past GTs. This is a not a thread of "what is your dream championships and endurances?" Instead, it's about "if you want events to return to GT5 (even if on different tracks), what championships and endurances would you want to see return?" What series would you like to see return even if modified extensively modified for use in GT5? I will offer my commentary in a future post. Comment in the meanwhile.
