WARNING: Another long and detailed thread!

This thread is for all to discuss what championships you think should return to GT5. Gran Turismo has been around for ten years. And through those ten years, GT gamers have been introduced to a variety of challenges, championships, endurances, and many more special races. Only our Gran Turismo veterans would know about just about every race and every championship. I'm proud to consider myself a Gran Turismo veteran having acheived at least 75% completion in all major Gran Turismo titles inclding beating all of Gran Turismo 1's races. Now it's time to take a look back to give you some perspective as to what championships and endurances you'd like to see return. I'm even willing to throw in whatever kinds of specific races you'd like to see. Now for the endurances, the endurance races are fine only as long as we'll be sure we can get to race them in GT5. So I'm not sure about if we'll see the return of (for example) the endurance race around Rome Circuit if it's not announced for GT5. This thread is not a copy of "The Road to the Gran Turismo World Championship." Instead, it is a look at championship series and endurances you'd love to see return to GT5 on this 10th Anniversary of the series. The closest thread similar to this topic was "What Race Series Would You Like to See in GT5?" by TheCracker. Only my thread is about past championships and series would you like to see return and not what new championships you'd want to see.

So let's do this! Now before we begin, I'd like to note that there are some classic championship series and events that are pretty much likely to show up in GT5. And those include the following:

--- Official Event Locks ---
* Sunday Cup
* Clubman Cup
* Gran Turismo Cup
* Gran Turismo World Championship

--- Special Event Locks ---
* Front/FWD races
* Front/RWD races
* Mid/RWD races
* 4WD races
* Grand Valley 300km
* Dream Car Championship
* Gran Turismo All-Stars
* Polyphony Digital Cup
* Spider and Roadster
* Lightweight Car Races
* Japanese/American/European Championships
* All Japan GT Championship and German Touring Car Championship

--- In Perspective: GT1's Races ---
Gran Turismo started it all in 1997 and 1998. Every race (except for the Spot Races and endurances) was its own championship. Once you had the license and the car needed for the event, it was just about entering the events. There were absolutely no races devoted to a single make or a single car within a make. The following were the many races GT1 had:

--- Official Events ---
Sunday Cup
Clubman Cup
Gran Turismo Cup
Gran Turismo World Championship

--- Special Events ---
* FF Cars
* FR Cars
* 4WD Cars
* Lightweight
* US vs. Japan
* Japan vs. UK
* US vs. UK
* Megaspeed
* Normal Car
* Tuned Car
* Grand Valley 300km
* Special Stage Route 11 All-Night 1
* Special Stage Route 11 All-Night 2
* (a special mode once you complete GT1)

This was just the very beginning for a game that was going to be much larger in future iterations.

--- In Perspective: GT2's Races ---
Gran Turismo 2 featured a wider variety of races even featuring One-Make Races. And for the first time, GT players could race in events without needing a license. This is for those who just can't wait to pick up the DualShock and go racing. The Gran Turismo League was the official race series. This series introduced cars from Germany, Italy, and France while broadening the range of cars for three existing nationalities of car in the GT series. In addition, rally races were added as well as four more endurance races than GT1 had. Simply put, this GT was bigger and more expansive than GT1. Surprisingly, only three official championship series are in GT2. This was the first GT to include a few new races that would become mainstays of the Gran Turismo universe- the normally-aspirated car races, the turbo races, and more importantly, the Gran Turismo All-Stars. One-Make Races would all take place on random race tracks requiring either normal cars or normal and racing cars. That would all change starting in GT3 and much more in-depth in GT4. This was also the debut of races divided among decades of cars including a new class devoted to classic and vintage cars. Here are the races other than the One-Make Races:

--- Official Races ---
* Japan Nationals
* French Nationals
* Italian Nationals
* US Nationals
* UK Nationals
* German Nationals
* Euro League
* Pacific League
* Gran Turismo World League

--- Special Races ---
* Sunday Cup
* Clubman Cup
* FF Challenge
* FR Challenge
* Mid-Engine Challenge
* 4WD Challenge
* Light-weight "K" Cup
* Luxury Sedan Cup
* Convertible Car World
* Compact Car World Cup
* Muscle Cup
* Historic Car Cup
* Station Wagon Cup
* Grand Touring Car Trophy
* 80s' Sports Car Cup
* Pure Sports Car Cup
* Tuned NA Car No.1 Cup
* Tuned Turbo Car No.1 Cup
* Gran Turismo All Stars
* Super Touring Trophy
* GT 300 Championship
* GT 500 Championship

--- Rally Events ---
(NOTE: Whether or not some of these return will depend on if we get them in GT5)

* Green Forest Roadway
* Smokey Mountain South
* Smokey Mountain North <<< personal favorite
* Tahiti Maze
* Tahiti Dirt R3
* Pikes Peak Downhill
* Pikes Peak Hill Climb
* Smokey Mt.North Reverse
* Tahiti Dirt R3 Reverse

--- Endurance Races ---
(NOTE: Whether or not some of these return will depend on if we get them in GT5)
* Laguna Seca 200 Miles
* Grand Valley 300 km
* Rome Circuit 2 Hours <<< "Millenium in Rome"
* Apricot Hill 200 km
* Trial Mountain 30 Laps
* Seattle Circuit 100 Miles
* S.S. Route All-Night

While I've hated GT2 later, there is one thing I'll admit for sure- the special events have the deepest amount of races for a broader variety of vehicles than even future GTs would allow. Where else could you competitively race a luxury car against others? I'd even welcome the challenge of racing a Bentley Continental GT (granted we Bentley returns with more cars in GT5) against a BMW 7-Series car or the Audi RS6 Sedan.

--- In Perspective: GT3's Races ---
While Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec lacked in the car count department from GT2, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec featured almost every make from GT2 including the debut of Gillet and Tickford. Events were sorted out according to difficulty level. Gran Turismo 3 lacked the diversity of events GT2 had, but made up for it with a variety of different races including newer championships and series. The only significant series that debuted were the Dream Car Championship and the Polyphony Digital Cup. Also significant was the series' first wet courses. While dynamic weather wasn't made available for every track, the challenge of wet racing was now possible for the first time in the series. This was the first GT in which you could compete in rally events without needing a rally car. Evidence was apparent when some of the license tests took place on the only wet course in the game- Special Stage Route 5. Other series would follow including Like the Wind and the infinitely more challenging Formula GT series. This game also includes the first-ever time an endurance race takes place around an oval. The different domestic championships and series would reappear in GT4 and may potentially be in GT5 as well.

* Mistral 78 Laps <<< Cote d'Azur used
* Super Speedway 150 Miles

These events would keep you busy despite the fact that the game doesn't have lots of One-Make Races. Race variety has mostly lacked, but hasn't lacked too much to be disappointments compared to GT2.

--- In Perspective: GT4's Events ---
A variety of firsts have come about for Gran Turismo 4. The most recent full GT game is the biggest yet with a massive variety of races and championships. Some of which last longer to even much longer than GT's past. Official events were now spread across three different levels of difficulty while not being like GT3 as far as the same series existing in other championships. Endurance races are now longer than ever, lasting anywhere between 90 minutes to 24 hours. You can thankfully use B-Spec to compete in the much longer races if you lack time to complete them. This is the first-ever Gran Turismo in which you don't need an International license or Super License to take part in an endurance. However, you need to have at least 25% of the game complete in order to race in the Endurance events.

While Gran Turismo 3 debuted nationality-specific championships, GT4 takes the concept even further with events for various nationalities of car. Each of those national events have lots of events to take part in ranging from championships to series races. One-Make Races returned and are all much more intense. Gran Turismo 4 debuted performance pickup trucks as well as an all-truck series. Proper tuner cars were also featured for the first time as they got their own championship. Beginners who wanted to race right away can do so without having to get a license. Only Spider and Roadster require a license.

A new "Extreme" class of events challenge the truest of champions in Gran Turismo. Victory in the Pro leagues will take you to newer heights as the game's most challenging races await you in the Extreme class. For the first time in GT history, you can freely compete in Family Cup events where you can enjoy a casual race in GT Mode to go out and casually race cars around a variety of tracks.

Also new is the first endurance-type championship series called "1,000 Miles!" This championship is in the European events, but a European car isn't required for the event. Don't be surprised if you see a Sting Ray Corvette race in this classic car (up to 1970) race.

This GT debuted many new nationalities of car including the debuts of Holden and FPV. This marked the debut of Spain's SEAT, the Netherlands' Spyker, the Swedish Volvo, and the Korea Republic's Hyundai and Proto Motors. The international appeal of GT has never been better. Same goes for the variety of races and race events.

On top of this, this is the first GT to feature true tarmac rallies as opposed to all dirt rallies. It was also the debut of snow rallies. One needs only race dirt and snow to know how much different racing on the two surfaces is.

Biggest GT yet with all kinds of race events.

So you now have a little refresher of all GT events even if you've never played any non-PS2 GT games. What would you like to see return for Gran Turismo 5? Please remember that this has to do with past GTs. This is a not a thread of "what is your dream championships and endurances?" Instead, it's about "if you want events to return to GT5 (even if on different tracks), what championships and endurances would you want to see return?" What series would you like to see return even if modified extensively modified for use in GT5? I will offer my commentary in a future post. Comment in the meanwhile.

I'd certainly like to see national-level championships being a pre-requisite of qualifying for the World Championship like in GT2 as I felt that was a better approach than the "clear everything in this hall and in that hall before you can do this race" used in GT4. I'd also like to see the GTWC revert back to being about national cars rather than the Le Mans Prototypes. Something like FIA GT would better represent the Worl Championship than LMP. That said, an LMP championship would also be a must.

Formula-wise, I'd like to see a different system, maybe based on the current F3/World Series by Renault-GP2-F1 layout. Better yet, I'd like to see these as pre-requisites for obtaining the game's Super Licence. I never did like the way you could attain a full quota of racing licences before you even started racing. While it certainly made things easier in getting everything over and done with early on, I did find it a bit of a chore to do it all in one hit.

I have some favorites in the sense of "what would you like to see return for GT5 if any past championships come along?" Here are some of my favorites:

--- Gran Turismo 1 Favorites ---
* Megaspeed Cup. Think about it- a high-horsepower, speed freaking demon going across three tracks. I could remember getting my Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO to scream down the track at about 240 mph tops. Never mind that it was absolutely heavy- that car can fly! Even more amazing that you can race these cars against a bunch of other demons. Any type of car could compete (meaning racing models can be used), just be sure to bring a powerful car! It was great fun to compete in a championship that's all about flat-out speed. Can you imagine what a championship like this could be like in GT5, especially if we see Daytona's oval carried over?

* Tuned Car. The Tuned Car event was special in that you could race highly-tuned cars... against highly-tuned cars. Only production models could enter. Just bring a capable car to take on about five different race courses. Can you be the hard-tuned car champion? Find out in this race.

* US vs. Japan, Japan vs. UK, and US vs. UK. I am including all three of these because this is a proper international championship pitting all three nationalities of car in GT1. The races were five laps long across five races. This was a race series in which you actually could take a little pride in taking on and taking down some of the finest cars GT1 had to offer. Especially with Racing Modifications, you can take your best pure sports car and compete with RacingModify (to use Tourist Trophy speak) cars. I'd even love to see some other championships among nationalities of car. Can you imagine UK vs. Germany? Germany vs. Italy? Japan vs. Korea? Japan vs. Australia?

--- Gran Turismo 2 Favorites ---
You may note a pattern or some sort of consistency with my posts here. Here are my picks. See if you can spot what I'm gearing towards.

* All Nationals. The Nationals offered up that sense of accomplishment in taking on the best the world has to offer in GT2. It would be perfect for a stepping ladder leading to the Gran Turismo World Championship.

* Luxury Sedan Cup. This was a series that pitted a variety of luxury cars against one another. I think a GT5 version could be called "Executive Car Cup." A lot of luxury-type cars have wonderful performance. Think of racing the BMW M5 in GT4 in that One-Make Series.

* Station Wagon Cup. They are long, heavy, and do a hell of a lot more than haul groceries. They can haul some ass as well. You GT4 types probably enjoy racing that Volvo station wagon/estate car in the game. Imagine sixteen of these at once on a track. I'd even opt for an Impreza estate car to use in the championship. I may even go for a Legnum or the classic Stagea.

* Grand Touring Car Trophy. I'd like to think of this as a light championship featuring GT-type cars. You won't find any Race Modified cars, but you almost want it to. This is like a baby GT series featuring production cars highly-modified for racing.

* Super Touring Trophy. There are a few cars I have in Gran Turismo 4 that I've specially tuned for racing, especially touring car racing. I would love the opportunity to do some touring car racing in GT5. These highly-modified economy sedans and coupes make for great touring cars. Among some of the models I have in GT5 include the 2003 Honda Accord, that Volvo S80, the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT (the FWD car you wish was 4WD or RWD), and cars like those. This was a great championship as you really had a chance to race certain cars in true touring car racing.

* GT 300 Championship and GT 500 Championship. The Autobacs Super GT cars have two seperate championships unlike in GT3. Japan's biggest motorsport series allows you to race both classes for victory in championships. If we get this in GT5, I hope GT5 allows class racing so that we can race the same schedule and only have to worry about winning in our class. In other words, I'd rather win in a C-West Silvia against other GT3000 opposition instead of always getting beaten by GT500 opposition.

That consistent flow I'm talking about? I'm mentioning the variety of racing events for a variety of cars, then also tweaking the formula to allow for race modified cars. These are things I'd lobby for in GT5.

-- Gran Turismo 3 Favorites ---

* Spider and Roadster. Here was a new bit of modifying I thought of: for convertible cars, have the option of having an open roll cage top similar to cars that run in the SCCA Production classes (like G-Production, for example) and even very few GT cars (the Spyker C8's have had this design for their GT cars some time back including some BMW Z4s that raced in Grand-Am Cup (now the Koni Challenge Series)). Imagine top-down racing fun!

* Stars and Stripes. This All-American championship pits the best American cars against one another. Who got the best American car? That's for you to find out in this championship.

* Beetle Cup. You only raced against Beetle Cup cars. However, it was a proper touring car-style cup featuring these unique cars.

* Legend of the Silver Arrow. It wasn't a championship, but it probably should be. It's about the best Mercedes-Benz autos. There were three or four of them in GT3 (the DTM car nonwithstanding), so it wasn't very interesting racing the same car multiple times. Mercedes cars can range from the entry-level model all the way up to the SLR. Of course, I'd like for it to be a One-Make Race.

* Japanese, American, and European Championships. What I liked about this is that it was a proper national championship of racing (or for Europe, a intercontinental championship). The cars were all road-going cars. Just run what you brung and make sure you brung enough. I predicted this to be a lock for GT5, so I can only hope for specially-tuned racing cars. Those of the production car variety, of course. Racing Modifications would be perfect here.

--- Gran Turismo 4 Favorites ---

* Sport Truck Race. My B-Spec driver was 0-3 while my A-Spec in this event was 3-0. Nothing wrong with racing trucks. There were actually some great performance pickup trucks in this game. I loved the Toyota Tacoma X-Runner best. I called it a "car that thinks it's a truck." I didn't state that in disrepect. What I meant was that it was a truck that performed great, almost car-like. I even won the Japanese Championship once racing this truck. Won every race with my finely-tuned Tacoma. The ultimate Tacoma to me is that Pikes Peak Toyota Tacoma raced in 1999 and 2000 by the awesome Rod Millen.

* Tuning Car Grand Prix. Those tuner cars can actually be quite capable. If you just absolutely hate these kinds of cars, at least this series shows that you can have fun with these kinds of cars. They aren't just "rice rockets" with the ugliest paint and body work known to humanity. I praised the Amuse S2000 GT1 as my favorite car in the game because it's a race car on street tires. As long as there are tuner cars, this will be a fixture guaranteed. D1GP cars may probably be used in racing though drift cars aren't very good road racers.

* World Classic Car Series. I didn't mention this as a fixture for GT4, but this series helps you appreciate the performance potential of various classic cars. With a new driving model, the cars may become tougher to handle. That could make the vintage car races exceptionally tough.

* Supercar Festival. It may well be a fixture if Ferrari's now included. The inclusion of Ferrari truly boosts the appeal of this series. I'm not sure how you'd define a supercar in the context of GT because a car with 493 horsepower or more can enter. That's a good start, but this means that ANY car not known or recognized as a supercar can enter this series. The cars have to be production cars with standard or sports tires.

* Real Circuit Tours. This is a series featuring only real-life world circuits. I'd probably appreciate if LMPs aren't required to even be competitive here.

Muscle Car Competition. A fun way to make this series better is to be able to have Trans-Am style cars competiting. I love Trans-Am, and this is about the best way to enjoy the classic days of Trans-Am featuring muscle cars.

1000 Miles! I'd appreciate this as an Extreme event as opposed to it just being a European event if it were in GT5. If you can make the time for a long race, you're as good as gold here. Just bring a production car here.

So those are series I wouldn't mind seeing again in GT5 if they were to return for GT5. How about you?

I'd like the real PD Cup to return - 20 laps of street-based race tracks in standard, unmodified production cars.

The Dream Car Championship was a great GT1 style event, and was a good place for me to race my home brewed race cars.

I'd like to see a proper Polyphny Digital Cup come back. I found GT4's method of pitting you against four average cars and one race-modifed road car incrediby annoying. Racing with it meant there was only one car that provided any measure of a challenge, while racing with the others was incredibly difficult.

I can't remember the name of it for sure, but I used to love an event in GT2 that was an endurance race at Grand Valley (could be the grand valley 300km event) I used to use the TVR Speed 12, its the only long race I ever felt like racing over and over again.

The GVS 300km enduro is quite possibly one of my single most favourite races, and having been in GT since the very beginning is kind of like "the" enduro of the Gran Turismo series, it certainly has a lot of heritage.

The Miata/MX5 enduro, it was a race I thought I would hate but it turned out I really enjoyed it.

Oh yeah man I remember that one, I felt the same way about it and ended up enjoying it a lot too! I always thought MX-5's were rubbish until I played that event, but now whenever I see one on the road I smile. :)

The Miata/MX5 enduro, it was a race I thought I would hate but it turned out I really enjoyed it.

Second that one, always nice to have a perfectly balanced car to race around a small but billiard-table smooth circuit!

Would quite like to see the return of the pickup races, providing we have pickups in GT5. And I'd like to see the lightweight K races back too.

GT300/GT500 is a must. Hopefully GT5 will include different classes of cars in each race (or at least the possibility of it).

I Miss both the trail mountain 2hrs and the Rome 2hrs

loved driving the Toyota GT One Road car in them

Was the 75 Laps Of Monte Carlo on gt4??

i can't remember the name of it but i'd like to see the championship series with the Formula GT from GT4 in GT5, that was some of the most competitive racing in all of GT4
a race with cars that close in performace at the Daytona oval would make for some great racing.

I miss the Event Synthesizer in GT2.
Imagine something similar with proper AI:s and relevant performance/vehicle type matching. An appreciated evolution would be the ability to choose the track and/or competition Yourself, maybee even constructing Your own championships.
Throw in the 12 to 16 or so strong starting grid and I can't think of a better gameplay after completing 100%.

Some past championships and endurances are locks for me as I listed in Post #1. Most of the basic events will likely stick around for GT5 including GT All-Stars, Grand Valley Speedway (GT's signature flagship race track), and all the different drivetrain races. The comments I've seen posted all consist mostly of past tracks that I think will likely show up in GT5 when GT5 is released. So fear not of seeing these again.

Here's a crazy concern... do you think it's possible for the first time in series history to see more than one version of a past track? For example, could you imagine Special Stage Route 11 in GT5 feauturing the configurations of GT1 and GT3 (and maybe a special GT5 configuration)? Or maybe GT4's variant of Grand Valley Speedway as opposed to GT's 1 and 2's configuration (GT4 has a smoother chicane coming out of the tunnel)?

Absolutly 2HR race at Tokyo ,love that track its got everything,long straights with crazy speed,hairpins,sweepers corner entrance & exit speed are critical.

wll i must say GT300/GT500 are a must indeed.
Also an endurance on trail mountain is a must for me i just love that track so any modified race on it is fine.
also the nationals where great fun.

I'd like to see the return of the Ford falcon supercar(GT3) and add a Holden Commodore supercar at Bathurst doing 1000 km enduro/100km sprint.

I'd like to see the return of the Ford falcon supercar(GT3) and add a Holden Commodore supercar at Bathurst doing 1000 km enduro/100km sprint.

There wasn't any races for the Supercar in the past though, this thread's about past championships returning.;)

I'd like to see the Japan GT Championship returning except with a small tweak, more cars and the seperation of the two classes in GT500 and GT300 but then on the flipside it would stop you from entering any car that wasn't classed in either of those two classes........

Also the Tuning Car Grand Prix. I loved that series with all the different tuners and cars, hopefully in GT5 there are more tuner cars so instead of six we can have upwards of ten car fields. More Euro tuners hopefully would make this even better.

And last but not least the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft championship, it was great to see the Opel, Mercedes and Alfa from the earlier years of ITC racing against the more modern Mercedes CLK, Opel Astra and the Audi TTR and A4. That would make a welcome return and please the European market no end.

I disslike every competiton that takes more than 2h to race....those 24h races in gt4 were just dumb imo...

race that last 20 laps is long enough for me

Not hardcore enough, please don't take the hardcore away from the hardcores.

haha..I won't... :dopey:

hope there is that b-spec in this one also.....

Yeah, B-Spec with a drive who knows what he's doing and a X6 speed.:D That way I can actually drive parts of the 24hr and it won't take over 12hrs to do. (I did it all B-Spec in GT4 except the start of the race and the finish, took over 9hrs each time).
