What would you do with $30k?

Must be hard to be a college or university student in the US (financially).
A lot of student loans in this thread.

The student loans are just extremely long term and more an annoyance. It's very attractive to get them out of the way. Universities are expensive almost everywhere, there are cheap "college" alternatives though.

I'm really amazed at the cost of all of these student loans.

I managed to get through 5 years of studies without owing a single penny to anyone. I did work through most of it though and paid as I went along.

Did you have scholarships?

Nope, but I did get some government support. The course fees I payed in advance and I worked to pay my rent and bills and everything else. I guess I was really lucky when it came to the opportunities that came my way. :)

School cost in Canada isn't bad, my tuition was $6000 this year, it's just when you combine that with living costs it gets pricey. I'm getting paid to live on residence as an RA next year so next year I won't be taking any debt. Lots of horror stories about US college debt though, especially the more prestigious private schools.

I'd have the money put into my education because then it's squared away and I don't have to worry about paying for tuition at all. That lets me keep the money I earn instead of saving money in May-August and then having no money every September.

I also don't really have anything big to spend it on otherwise, and I'd rather graduate debt free so when I have a job that pays higher after I get my degree I'll be able to buy cool schtuff.

Add me to the list. I think $30k might be just enough to eliminate my debt, student loans and all.

Finally start my thrash-techno band, can anyone here play the Glass Harmonica?

The cost of a university education in America is insane. I have friends who applied to schools with tuition costs of $60,000 a year. And they have to pay living expenses on top of that.

That wouldn't cost 30k to do...

Have you ever looked into how much it would cost to take a 20 piece synth-orchestra on the road!?

30k would only cover the first couple stops. After those are clear we can ride the rest on ticket sales.

Yes, I'm dead serious bro.

Perhaps I'd pay $5,000~10,000 for my studies or some equipments indispensable for them(like my PC of my own and its keyboard), or my school lones in case of emergency(in fact the academic fees in Japan are extremely high)...
another $10,000 I'll deposit them in a bank for my future insurance or home loan for my parents if they can't afford to pay that back altogether.

And with regards to the rest I'll save 7,000~8,000 for other future purposes other than mortgages(or in case I'm about to run out of money in other expenditure) and the remnant 2,000~3,000 I'll spend for my hobbies. :D

Student loans.....luckily for me I'd still have a couple g's left over. I suppose I'd go back and finish my school with that money....woo....

I would buy the wife another old Volkswagen of some kind. Probably a split window bus for her to restore.

And to think that this is a real situation for myself...

Anyway, first, I'll be depositing it with my bank, fixed for seven years or something. I'll also create an additional savings account. In seven or so years, I'll take all of the money and take out a loan to buy an apartment or a small house.

Lucky. I've been in college for 3.75 years and spent a total of $50K. I went so long because I switched to a different course. It costs me $13K per year going by how long that I've been there. But normally it's $20K per year in my college's 2 year program. Thankfully I have the financial support of my parents and I'm only paying for $8K-10K out of the total price.

Invest in stock market or just put in bank. I have no reason to be stupid and spend for now what I may need for later.

If I was old enough, I'd buy a Mazda. More specifically, this one. Obviously I've tweaked it a bit to my liking, but I can't show that in the link.

I wish I was that smart, but I'm stupid so I'd run out and by a Luxman L-507u or L-509u integrated amplifier, they sound amazing and they look cool as hell with those big old school VU meters., I'd probably pay off the credit card and put the remaining money back into the emergency fund....which recently shrank.

What would I do with $30,000?

Exchange it for £19762.50. :sly:

Then I'd buy a nice new '13 small/city car (let's say £10000 for a fully kitted car), put £4500 in my bank for petrol, and use the other £4500 as spending money. :)

The other £760 would be blown in one big unnecessary spending spree. :D

How did you get that figure? I got £19557.99. :P
