What's the general verdict on this game?

Places like IGN are lovin' this game, but when I went to see the forum for the game, people were all PO'd. They were saying things like "EA owes us money!" and "this game is the worst!". Who's right? Is it really undeserving of a 9.0, or does NFS just have a broken fanbase? I mean, you can use a Maserati, the Lambo Reventon, the LF-A, it just goes on.

Oh, and when you're online, can you specify which tier of car you use like in Burnout Paradise? I'm just worried that some of the lower cars (ie, RX-8 and the AE86) would be useless online.

Also, once you unlock a car in career mode, can you customize it for quick-race and online without worrying about money? Sort of like in Carbon?

I was loving the game in Tier1 and Tier2, Then Tier 3 came. Frame rate issues, slow motion, "bouncing cars", "punter" AI driving. When the next patch for the Shift comes out hopefully it corrects most of the issues less the AI as discussed in the patch thread. You will notice that most people that are posting in the threads are running stock races, or cars tuned for 10.0 or less. I would highly recommend renting the game first, don't get me wrong it is fun but frustrating the higher level you attain.

I pretty much agree with above. When i race online i always race stock cars tier 2 maybe 3 but definitely under 10.00. Otherwise people just cant handle the cars, get too excited and start ramming constantly. It's rididulous. Stick em in a slow car and they don't know what to do with themselves "OMG i actually needz skillz".

Again offline the AI is too crazy in tier 3/4 cars. It's a hell of alot of fun though this game, i'm glad i bought it. And despite what some say, the career has plenty of depth IMO. I've had it since release and i've still racing early tier 3 events and have ALOT of invititational events to do. yet i have plenty of money from sponsorships and wins to have all of the cars i want or need. Money isn't really an object in this game.

AI being a cheat isn't too much of an issue for me; I play F-Zero. As long as the game isn't unwinnable, I can do it.

And can you modify LF-A?

Basically it's a great, but very buggy game. In the state it was released there was no way it deserved 9.0. When the bouncing and frame rate issues are fixed, which is the majority of the major problems people are having then I'd call it a fair somewhere between 8 and 9. Very good and worthy of picking up if you like racing.

Patch to fix the bouncing and frame rate is due out in the next month or so. Buy it now and get some practise in. Some car/track combinations are undrivable as is, and finishing the career mode is frustrating but you'll have a blast with the rest of the game.

Places like IGN and game reviewers in general, don't play most games they test in-depth.
And yes, on the surface, only playing NFS Shift for an hour or two, it could seem really great, especially to someone that isn't overly car savvy.
However, once you go in-depth, and probe into all of the games "features", you find loads of flaws.
I myself haven't played it in almost a week now, with the delivery of Moto GP 08 from gamefly yesterday, it's going to be a lot longer, if I don't just sell it altogether.

Shift will be 10x better when the bouncing bug is fixed.
You mean IF it's fixed. It's getting close to 2 months since it's release, I can't speak for anyone else, but my patience is about out.

If I'd only played shift for a few hours I would have thrown it out the window, it took me more than a few hours just to fix all the damn bugs that made it completely unplayable. :P

Just to give you an impression... I bought it on release day... I was blown away in the beginning... Nice fresh game... good driving experience etc, etc. After a couple weeks of playing... Frustration, frustration and more frustration... TOO MANY BUGS, so many that it just gets discouraging to play anything but single player race mode or online with people you know... Some cars bounce uncontrollably like theyre on hydros, frame rate issues to point it looks like slow-mo... It's basically a typical EA game... Rushed in development and all about the money... It's a pity though, the game has GREAT potential and if you have a good gaming PC, which I dont, I would suggest getting the PC version over the console one... Also because of the Mods and stuff...

Oh yeah... I dont play Shift anymore at the moment... Unless a good patch comes out that fixes all the issues I think its going to stay that way as well... Im really enjoying Supercar Challenge though... Graphics are a bit less but car choice is good and the game itself + Physics are very, very challenging.. ;)

Originally I loved this game, played it nearly non-stop. But around my second week of playing Shift it started to get a little boring. All the bugs, ridiculous AI and other factors started to ruin the game for me. The online does not get any better either. Many of the people I've raced online apart from those I know don't race clean at all. But what can I say, the game does not necessarily preach clean racing.

Overall the game is really challenging and fairly enjoyable, but these array of issues really bring the game down.

Let's be fair, the racers online aren't any different to the racers online in any other racing game. 90% of them behave like they're drunken 12 year olds with three fingers.

NFS:S is a really good racing game that is, unfortunately, hampered by a layer of bugs and glitches. If they can patch up the problems, it'll be a fantastic game. But it should've been released with everything working properly.

It feels like a product where they didn't have enough time to check/test everything, maybe due to time constraints to meet a release date... (*cough* EA *cough*)

Shift is a fun game if you don't take it too seriously. And has excellent graphics and graphic features.

But in no way can it compare to GT5P, FC or SCC.

Think of it as an enhanced chewing gum. you get it, you taste it, feels nice, then the flavour gets lost and you dump it in the nearest trash bin.

I have not been more immersed in a driving game. I think the actual "feeling of driving" is worth owning this game for, especially if you enjoy the cockpit view as it is the only way to play this game. It certainly does not have the longevity of other driving games, and I am not saying it is one of the best driving games, but if you can pick it up at a reduced price it is well worth the price of admission.

I agree with this. EA are pricks, but it doesn't necessarily make this a bad game just because it's EA.

I think if Shift were in full working order, it would compare well to GT5P and FC/SCC. The physics are different to either of those, but still good. The graphics would be acceptable to good if it didn't have the frame rate drops. The force feedback is good, and the driving experience exceptional. There are definite positives to the game.

I think anyone who is serious enough to frequent these forums should at least rent and try it. If you can't rent, buy it. At worst you'll have some fun for a few weeks and get sick of it as Hun200kmh says. At best, it'll click with you and you'll play it till GT5 comes out.

I think its definately worth a rent, but I regret buying it. "Few weeks" was more like "few days" for me.

Ouch. that's a big cost for a few days entertainment WolfRacer.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in the game too. I'm quite happy to hot lap in the stock cars with the occasional bit of online, and the game handles that fine. Hence why I'm still playing. If you wanted to go for more of the tuning side, or racing the AI and career mode then I could see how it would be an expensive coaster after a couple of days.

Shift feels too much like NFS:SHIFT "Prologue"... or the GT4 "Arcade" disc. Enough to whet your appetite for a bit, but not a long term relationship like GT or Forza is...

If the glitches and at-the-limit assists were fixed, then it might be worth a long-term drive. As it is, it's a perplexing mix of detailed, accurate physics and arcade-like gameplay. It'll fail to satisfy pure arcade drivers and pure hardcore drivers, but if you're at the right distance between the two, you will most likely enjoy it a lot.

I've seen one IGN's video on YouTube (a review on NFS Shift with a 9.0 score). They were talking about the cockpit view and, the cockpit view, the graphics and how it's fun to play... but for me, it seems to have a driving style similar to NFS Pro Street (which was ***)
Do the cars move like NFS:PS or to any other NFS?
And please tell me, what is the real problem in tier 3/4 cars?

I like the game. It has problems for sure but overall but it's a good game. The track selection is fair enough the car selection is kind of light but its a good game.

SHIFT ain't nothing like ProStreet except in terms of presentation... ProStreet was as arcade as most other NFS titles... SHIFT has an entirely different game engine.

Shift grows on me more and more and now I am hooked at getting better. I loved GRID and this is a completely different driving experience. More difficult to drive really well in Shift. The tuning is great but difficult to get a handle on. I find the default settings horrible and others race them well. I play on a PC with a keyboard and that makes it much more difficult than using a wheel.

I love Shift. Its a great game in many respects.... but i feel that there are many pieces of the game that don't seem complete, or were simply overlooked. Heres a list of things i think should be addressed:

-Decorating your car (sooo difficult to make YOUR OWN car...)
-The annoying bouncing many cars do
-The damage isnt as good as many other games (GRID is way better)
-Tuning isnt striaghtforward (fast bump, slow bump???)

I also have this problem with audio when i am using bumper and hood cam while racing... the audio is intermittent. The gameplay can also become laggy when doing a 16-car race.

Overall though, I like this game..... its fun, and a decent alternative to GT5p.... Not bad for a first attempt at a full-on racing sim.

Fast and slow bump refer to how your suspension acts under different conditions and different rates of vertical travel. Slow bump will affect how your car reacts to dips and crests and gentle bumps. Fast bump will affect how it reacts to harsher suspension inputs, like kerbs and pebbles.

I can't pretend to understand how to accurately tune such a system, but you can check this series of articles out for some good tips:

It was good for a couple weeks of entertainment, after that it got old. The gameplay itself isn't horrible but the bigs make it a lot worse than it should be. Here are some of my main complaints.
-Horrible menu's, sure the angled menu looks good but it is harder than it should be to read.
-Higher performance cars serve no purpose in career mode(why even have them?)
-Online is horrible without being able to select a room
-Too easy to get money, even if you don't do the super easy "race now with no AI" you can get loads of cash just doing career mode. A little grinding never hurts a game.
-Rewards over-aggressive driving.

Overall this is a good first step to bring the NFS series back to what it should be. However they still have a ways to go.

gota say its growing on me. only other racing game I had for the PS3 was GRID and this takes racing to a whole new level. even convinced me to go out and get a wheel took a while to get it set up right but now I'm loving it.
the things that wind me up are no online lobby, whats that all about? insanly twitchy tier 4 cars and no pre race tuning or multiple tuning options.
what i would realy like to see is them bring out some kind of full race weekend patch / DLC. but i dought thats ever going to happen
