Which car do you think has the most bizarre sounding engine?

I think the Honda S500 does, it scared me when I first drove it!

The Austarlian FPV, or something like taht. fully tuned, it screams. And i really mean screams. :scared:

Edit: I mean screams for a frickin v8, ofcourse its ntorhing compared to a 10k revving s500, bu for a v8 it is crazy.

Meh.

I'm quite surprised nobody's said the FC RX-7s at low rpms. Of course, it's about right for a big ported two rotor, but... It sounds like nothing else on earth.

Definitely the Ford GT, LM or non-LM

. This car's engine doesn't even sound like an engine...it sounds like a dentist's drill or something 👎 I've heard a Ford GT in real-life (some lady who lives nearby actually owns & drives it often) and they sound nothing like the Gt in the game. 👎 It makes me MAD actually

i cant really give an opinion on the sound of the cars because i have the sound turned all the way down when i play. (mainly because the wife is watching melrose dvd's or some other ****) and the two tv's are in the same room. i dont like headphones because i am already turnig a little deaf.

i would rather play with no sound that not playing at all.

theres another thing i want to comment on. how come nearly all cars have the same sound when they are tuned to the max? and if not why dont the v8's actuall sound like a modified v8 rather than a whining sound of a v6,10 and 12?

Definately the Ford GT, LM or non-LM

You need to take a ride in the Ford GT and see what it sounds like inside...

Remember, the sounds are supposed to be representative of what you would hear DRIVING the car, not standing behind the exhaust. I'm not saying the sounds is definitely accurate, I'm just saying that comparing the Ford GT in the game to sound the same as the one driving by you on the street isn't the correct way to judge it. You would have to ride in the car...

Then howcome the cars sound different from different camera views when driving?

Does she drive it about 7000 revs all the time? How a car's engine sounds under normal conditions and how it sounds at full tilt around a track are very different.

Well, they do try to compensate somewhat for that, but not very well. Of course, I've never seen anyone actually drive the game in "behind view" anyway, so I don't know that it really matters much.

In the few vehicles which I can personally compare (the most obvious being the classic air-cooled boxer VWs), the sound is actually pretty accurate once you realize it is the "inside the car with windows rolled up" version of the car's sound. The sound of the classic VWs is spot-on. Yeah, it isn't as fun as hearing beetle and ghia tweet their way around the track, but it is more realistic since you don't hear that tweeting sound inside those cars when the windows are rolled up.

As for the Ford GT, it is actually supposed to be a reasonably quiet car inside, my guess is they probably got it relatively accurate. As for the (white) race version, I think you're hearing the whine of the super-charger, which would be just behind your right ear. With the removal of weight (sound-deadening materials), that super charger would be much louder.

Again, I'm not saying all the sounds are spot-on or perfect, but once you realize that the are NOT supposed to sound like you are standing right behind the exhaust, they make a lot more sense.

The Ford GT: It most likely would have taken too long to program seperate engine sounds for different camera angles for every car.

The Bentley Speed 8 has the same tone as an Audi R8, but with lower revs, as does the R390 GT1 and the R89C and R92CP. They actually have nice sounds, but the R8 sounds too much like a Skyline from GT2. The Nissan Group C racers are awesome, though. The Honda S800 and the Toyota Sports 800 (also S800) have this bizarre similarity as well, and let's not forget the Ford GT and the Mustang SVT Cobra.

The Panoz Esperante GT1 sounds like an asthmatic organ, and the S500 yes does have a strange engine sound. I like it. It is those roller bearings inside the motor, a feature from motorcycles, Honda's staple back then. This is why this sound did not carry over on the S600 or S800, as the cars became more conventional.

The Saleen S7 and the Viper SRT-10 also sound similar. Perhaps they share engines?

And how about those Alfas! They sound like GT1 Miatas!

Sorry, I'm not buying that explanation. There are 2 soundbytes for each car in the game...one that's supposed to be "inside" and one that's supposed to be "outside". The real-life Ford GT sounds more like a typical V8 with a fat, hollow-sounding exhaust, not the zzzweeeeee I'm hearing in the game.

No, but I did hear her pull some revs one day because I was right behind her GT at a red light. At idle the car's got a nice burbling exhaust, and as the revs build this changes to more of a growl. Again, not the zweeeeee I keep hearing in GT4.

....then again, I haven't actually driven a Ford GT in the game yet....I'm talking about the AI cars...perhaps when you drive it, it sounds better.

You guys who complain about the cars sharing sounds... think about one thing. The size of the sound files.

I play a PC flight simulator (MS CFS3 to be exact) a lot that allows adding custom sounds to aircraft. A good quality sound package can easily be 10 MB in size, even more if the clips are long. You guys want every car with every tuning part to sound different. Now, what if we had, say, 250 different sounds for the cars in GT4? They would already take up to 3 GB of disc space and still only cover a third of the stock cars. Add the same amount of sounds to every exhaust option and we're at 12 GB. Add the same amount to NA tuning, turbos and superchargers and we're at 21 GB. And the DVD disc can only take around 8 GB. I bet they had better use for the limited disc space than filling most of it with sounds.

Yes, some of the sounds could be better. But having a wider range of them is damn near impossible.

Yeah that's true. Honestly I'm happy with the variety of sounds in GT4, it's just that some of them are way off the mark.... The Ford GT dilemma in particular is odd to me since Kazunori owns one in real-life.

I was under the impression, please prove me wrong, that all A.I. cars in GT4 use a generic engine sound?

Okay, I wasn't exactly complaining, but rather I was just pointing out something I found interesting. I actually like that sound. But, you caught me on that Audi R8 comment, though I personally think those Skylines sounded great in GT2. Now they have a horribly dull exhaust note. Perhaps I should have worded my first post here differently.

As for the Viper and Saleen: Thank God!

No. Generic Ai engine/exhaust sounds are only found in GT1 and 2 because the PS1 system can only process so much info, so they had to program most of the Ai in these early games to sound alike.

Then how come the older GT games have much better sounds for each car, and a high percentage of them sounded different from other cars, meaning that you won't hear the same sound with racing exhaust as you do now in GT4. Even GT2 had more realistic V8 sounds with Racing Exhausts, or stock Exhausts. There was even times that I didn't even TRY installing a Racing Exhaust on my cars, because I'm pretty damn sure it was going to ruin the sound of it. In GT2 I can install it and still be pretty satisfied with the sound, even on muscle cars.

I would love it if they stuck with the sounds from GT2, and some from GT3, I miss that Supra JGTC's sound, it sounded like a Rally Car, with higher revs, considering they used a 4cyl Celica Rally Car's engine in it, and mods. And GT2 even had more realistic physics IMO.

No, in GT2 they had 3 generic AI sounds, one for NA cars, one for Turbo cars, and another for NA cars with over 9k revs.

that is because it has a motorcycle engin

just in case you didnt know:tup:

I would have though it would accelerate quickly with a Motorcycle Engine.

But then again it's over 40 years old and most Motorbikes don't weigh over 500KG.
