My favorite guitarists in this order (and the band they are currently playing in) are:
1) Alex Lifeson (Rush)
2) Joe Satriani (Chickenfoot)
3) Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
4) The Edge (U2)
5) Jimmi Hendrix

1: Buckethead
2: John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
3: George Harrison (The Beatles)
4: Emppu Vuorinen (Nightwish)
5: Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction)

The final 5 minutes of this video are what does it for me. Seriously that is absolutely insane. In his final days with the peppers.

Sorry, got it wrong the first time a few days ago. Changed.

Joe Satriani (just found out my doctor went to the same highschool as him!)
John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Steve vai
Paul Gilbert (Racer X)
Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth)

1. John Petrucci (Dream Theater) JOHN PETRUCCI IS GOD

2. Marty Friedman (used to be in Megadeth, one of his solos are so extreme Megadeth's new guitarist, Chris Broderick fell over after playing it)

3. Joe Satriani (Joe Satriani)

4. Steve Vai (Steve Vai)

5. Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden, thing is, he is really underrated, people say he's not that good but he is)

Chris Broderick (Megadeth/Nevermore/Jag Panzer)
Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)
Django Reinhardt
Paul Gilbert
Frederick Thorendaal

*Edit* Gonna swap Nuno for Tosin Abasi from Animals as leaders.

Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
John Petrucci
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Angus Young
Tommy Emanuel
Joe Satriani

There are too much...

1. Dave Murray/Adrian Smith/Janick Gers (Iron Maiden)
2. Dave Mustaine(Megadeth)
3. Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
4. Dimebag Darrell (Pantera)
5. Michael Amott/Christopher Amott (Arch Enemy)

Maybe not the 5 best, by my personal favorites.

Honorable Mentions: Jeff Loomis (Nevermore), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Chris Broderick (Megadeth), John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Glen Titpton/K.K Downing (Judas Priest), Alex Skolnick/Eric Peterson (Testament), Gary Holt/Lee Altus (Exodus), Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman (Slayer), Chuck Schuldiner (Death), Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah)......Too many to list :)

New 5. My opinion of the all time top 5.

1. Hendrix
2. Frusciante
3. Gilmour
4. Page
5. Clapton

What? No mention of Yngwie Johansson Malsmsteen?

My Top Five would be:
1 : Eddie Van Halen - The most influent guitarrist ever.
2 : Hendrix - Awesome in all ways.
3 : Joe Satriani - Instrumental rock FTW.
4 : Yngwie Malmsteen - Ridiculously fast, flamboyant and mad, if a Lamborghini knew how to solo it would want to be Malmsteen.
5 : Dave Mustaine - Because Megadeeeeeth rocks.

Eddie Van Halen
Gary Moore
Guthrie Govan
Frank Zappa
Devin Townsend

Otherwise - Steve Vai, Satriani, the Ammott brothers (Arch Enemy), Hendrix and probably a few more also played a huge part in influencing and inspiring me to play guitar, and wrote some of my favourite music.

1. Tony Iommi (The Inventor of the Heavy Metal Riff)
2. Eddie Van Halen (All Style Master)
3. Dimebag Darrell (Like Eddie)
4. Ace Frehley (Best Soloist)
5. Dave Mustaine (Technical Wizard)

Iommi tops everyone and without Iommi there would be no metal at all.

I'm a big music fan, just about any kind, except for most of the mainstream stuff.

Anyway, I thought I'd start a thread about discussing our favorite guitarists. Could be from any band, genre, etc, it doesn't matter. And you can post as many as you want, preferably with a link(such as a youtube video) to your favorite song by said guitarist. Also maybe give a quick description as to what you like about their style of playing, etc...

I'll start things off with some of my current favorites and players who influence me when I play my own guitar:

Eric Johnson
This guy is incredible. From his melodic fast paced style of playing, to his smooth flowing riffs and mastery of tone, Eric inspires me any time I hear/watch him play. I am going to a live show in August to see him, I can't wait! Also he is most famous for his song Cliffs of Dover.

Here's a couple songs, just a sample. I encourage you to check out more of his stuff!:

Cliffs of Dover live
(1988 Austin, Texas)

Manic Depression(Jimi Hendrix cover, Anaheim 2006)

Are You Experienced(Jimi Hendrix cover, 1988 Austin, Texas)
note: it starts around the 7:38 mark. The songs before that are Eric's own original stuff

Jimi Hendrix
Guitar legend. Without Jimi, music would not be as it is today. Not much more to say, except that if you don't know who Jimi Hendrix is, then you just are .

Eric Gales

Other than the fact the he is left handed, and plays a right handed guitar upside down with the strings backwards, ummm... Yeah. This guitarist is mesmerizing to watch. He makes playing look so easy. In a few ways, he reminds me of how Jimi played on stage, how he made it looks effortless.

Little Wing(Jimi Hendrix cover)(specifically around the 6:00 minute mark)

Little Wing(again, Jimi Hendrix cover)

Voodoo Chile(again, Jimi Hendrix cover)

J Mascis

He's the guitarist/singer for the band, Dinosaur Jr. He's got some heavy distortion on everything he plays for Dinosaur Jr. But he's got some great solos in him, specifically in these songs:

Said the People:

Pick Me Up:

There's a few more guitarists that I like, but I don't want to make this post too long.

So, what about the rest of you? Who do you like?

John Petrucci
Adrian Smith
Marty Friedman
Steve Vai
Michael Romeo

By the way, I think there's already a thread on this
