Why so many underage users?

I don't think age matters as much as a person maturity. But generally kids 12-15 aren't very mature and it ruins it for the rest.

Lol age has nothing to do with being a jack ass. I promise 99% of the stupid people are in high school. It's more up to the person signing up to be responsible because it's literally impossible to tell who signs up.

So true. I walk around the halls of my school every day and sigh at the immaturity that goes on.

I could as well ask, how does turning 13 make you any different than what you were at the age of 12 years and 364 days? In no way. That's a big loophole in age limits, same goes for the limit of 18 years when buying violent games. I fail to see a 17 year, 364 day old dude who is too immature to play GTA, suddenly become mature enough on his 18th birthday.

Maturity is irrelevant. The law sets an age limit as you have to draw a line somewhere. If they said, "ah, okay then, if you're 17 years, 364 days old then you can buy this 18 rated game" then all the 17 year, 363 day old people are going to wonder why they can't also buy it. And on, and on ad infinitum.

A line has to be drawn regardless of maturity.

I don't know if this applies to the world too but I am sick and tired of seeing underage users, because quite frankly they expose themselves to unneeded risk and they have generally a low level of maturity and barely can contribute to a civil conversation.
Now, I am not just adding to the list of complaints with this thread. All I want is a reassuring answer on why so many underage users? Isn't this supposedly illegal to join this site if under the age of 13?
Thank you.

Don't worry I frown upon them too. :grumpy: 👍

So if I were in violation of the COPPA law, can I be prosecuted even though I live in New Zealand, where the law doesn't apply?

it's easy to lie about age, however, we do ban users who are found to be under the age limit.

You don't have to reveal any of your secret know how (if that's the such), but how can you really identify an underage user ?

Grammar ? Lack of punctuation and capitalization ? We see a bit of that throughout the forum, many of whom are from a foreign country who's grammar, punctuation and lack of caps. is not the greatest. So how do you decipher if it is a person with bad English writing skills or an underage user ?

Oddly enough, they usually reveal their age themselves, either to a member of the staff or in a forum post.

That's how I screwed myself on another forum  Weird enough, on this forum or the other one-I never see anything about an age limit. Yes, I always read the rules.

You're required to enter your birth date during new account registration. If the date puts you at less than 13 years of age, you won't be allowed to continue.

I'm fairly sure it was there when I signed up a few years ago. You know it's bad when, like me, lying about your age means taking it back a few years, not adding them on!!

slowman
If you want drama and immaturity, you should've been on gran-turismo.com back in the very late 90's/early 00's.
I may have been a contributor to some of that. :0
When you're young you don't realize that people get mad if you say/type what you really think.

Steady on granddad...

It's a Federal Law so it'll be the FBI.

(think of the FBI as being like the UK's CID but rather than belonging to one police force they're employed at a national level).

I am Admin over at GBRC, was having a nose around the Admin Control Panel and could see some ref to COPPA.

Yes, you'll have a list of Registered (COPPA) Users. It's a function of most forum softwares I can think of (which is a small list).

If a site has COPPA Users this means the site allows under-13s to join and requires a signed statement from a parent or guardian allowing them to join. GTP has no COPPA Users.

Okay...we don't need to know everyone's age when they joined in this thread.

Go here: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=114794
(I know, "old" doesn't work in the search engine, so I helped.)

But if a parent was to provide a signed statement a user under 13 could sign up here? Or do you just not accept such requests?

For sites that accept COPPA users, yes. This site does not accept COPPA users.

One question though. Let's assume I have a second son/daughter, still under 13, that he/she plays GT with his/her dad and older brother and wants to join gtplanet. I just checked the "register" procedures and as soon as you set a birthday date that means you are still under 13 you get a message saying that you can't register (doesn't say why though).

My question is, because I saw this posted by Famine:

"By requiring people to be over 13, GTP commits no offense* under COPPA regulations. Anyone who tries to join GTP who is under 13 and lies to join the site is themselves committing an offense under COPPA regulations if they do not provide us with signed parental consent and is breaking the AUP."

So I could send Jordan a signed "parental consent" and then he could allow my youngest son/daughter to register an account here?

EDIT - LOL, Tree'd inn the last 10 minutes, that's what you get for looking around before posting
