Wolfe: While what you said did play a major role, I think Nintendo actually made it their policy to distant themselves from games like Grand Theft Auto for a while, indeed focusing on "kiddie" games. I do remember Nintendo executive getting quoted for saying something along those lines. I did dislike them for that. And it wasn't until Resident Evil series started being mentioned for GameCube that I considered getting a Nintendo console again.

That may be true (and it wouldn't surprise me), but the bottom line is that they seem to have learned their lesson from those days, and have a clear mission plan for the Wii -- games for everyone.

Who the heck is "Big Reggie"? Does he really work for Nintendo, or did you just paste the face on some Japanese guy?

It's okay, Duck, Omnis was just having a "Touring Mars" moment, and I decided to join in the fun. If you know what I mean by that, you should be able to find what you're looking for in our posts on this page. ;) (It may help you to notice the italicized words in my posts.)

:boggled:

Let's just say I'm tired and can't think straight.

Yeah, he seems like a really cool guy. One of my favorite quotes of his is the following:

Wikipedia.org
At E3 2006, Reggie Fils-Aime described [Excite Truck] as being in the same "pedigree" as Excitebike, except you are controlling a "big damn truck".

A big damn truck indeed.

Yeah, I saw that one. Now we just need to watch out for Oprah.

By the way, I thought of something last night...are you guys familiar with those hotels that have Nintendo "pay-per-play" systems, where the TV has an SNES-controller-looking thing connected to it (that also functioned as the TV remote) and you can play Super Mario World and such for a small fee on your hotel bill?

I could easily imagine a hotel having a Wii in every room, with a special attachment on the WiiMote that allows it to perform both Wii and ordinary TV duties, and a menu where you can order Wii/GCN/N64/SNES/NES/Genesis/TG16 games...

Yay got my pre-order in for my Wii this morning, along with Twilight Princess! Only what 5-6 more weeks, nice.

Urgh, I was thinking about waking up earlier to stop by EBGames before going to work at 11:00am (my job and EB are both in the same mall, which opens at 10am), but I said "nah, I wanna sleep in a bit more. Besides, I'll only be there an hour or so after open."

By the time I got to EB (which was only minutes after getting to work and asking my boss if I could run over there quick), they had already sold out all of the preorders, which seemed ridiculous to me until I found out how many they had given out...18.

That's actually quite a lot in comparison to the 8 PS3 preorders per store.

And really, since there'll be about like what, 1 million at launch for the US, as well as several more million by the end of the year, preorders aren't a big deal.

Indeed. That's why I'm not particularly worried, although I am a bit cheezed that EB would even bother offering preorders if they don't know the official number that they're getting yet.

I'm probably just going to wind up pulling a Nintendo 64 Kid for my next gen consoles at Christmas.

...I know Best Buy said they won't take pre-orders for either system. If you can tolerate the weather, I'd say "Go for it!" But alas, winter came pretty quick this year across the midwest, and even New York.

(Ahhh, the good-ol-days. I remember November 9, 2004 like it was yesterday. Standing outside in 25 degree weather for two-hours waiting for Halo 2, thinking it was nothing... My what two-years does to your body. I isn't even worth it by my nearly 20 year-old standards these days... Unless of course we are talking about Halo 3...)

Back of the Wii box sparks speculation

The good people at Wiixors snagged some decent shots of the back of the Wii box at an EB Games and, besides making us want one of our very own, it has caused a few rumors to pop up -- namely, what is the Wii Startup Disc?

The rumors seem to be split into several camps: One says it's nothing more than the Wii Sports disc; others say it's an OS disc; other still say it's the Wii Opera browser, some sort of tutorial, or something far more insidious ... like a firmware update. It's a mystery.

If it's just the Wii Sports disc, why wouldn't the box say that? There's already a huge notice on the front of the box proclaiming the Wii Sports disc to be inside, so what else could it be? What do you want it to be?
Let the speculation begin.

Here's an additional pic.

...and that makes me wonder how large the box will be.

Most of that box is going to be air. It only needs to be that big for the sensor bar. The Wii itself is only like 8x6 inches. My guess is that the disc contains Wii Sports (duh), Opera or an installer, and a Network config CD type of thing.

GRAW 2 Takes Aim, Assassins Waits, More Wii from Ubi
The company makes an earnings statement interesting.
by Kathleen Sanders

October 24, 2006 - Packed in with Ubisoft's otherwise dry and stuffy earnings statement was some good news, and some bad news, for gamers.

First up, the company has good news for Nintendo fans. "Ubisoft managed to take full advantage of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and should now benefit from the much awaited PlayStation 3 and Wii launches, with in particular 7 titles available for the Wii", said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. At least one of those seven is an unannounced all-new brand for Nintendo's next-gen system. Ubisoft had previously admitted they are working on a version of Prince of Persia for the Wii -- perhaps that is part of this new group of titles. Along with the seven titles at the system's launch, Ubisoft will bring 14 games to the Wii by March of 2007.

The company also announced that anticipated sneak-and-strike action adventure Assassin's Creed and sequel WWII shooter Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway will not be released in the fourth fiscal quarter. Instead in that timeframe Ubisoft will offer Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, the sequel to the future-soldier first-person shooter. This means we'll see GRAW 2 before the end of March 2007. No further details on GRAW 2 were available at this time.

The company said holding Assassins and Brothers back "will now strengthen fiscal year 2007-08" -- which for the rest of us means the games will now arrive sometime between April 2007 and March 2008. Both titles were tentatively scheduled to be released in the first part of 2007 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
Hmm... I wonder what they could be?

Rabbits. I just want rabbits. That game is exactly the type of thing I want a Wii for. Looks good, and just over the top fun. I know, like everyone else does, that the Wii is no graphical powerhouse like the other 2 systems. But, I'm not a graphics whore, so it doesn't matter. If its fun, and hard to put down, I'm sold. Because of that, my 3 launch games I'm getting with the system in a few weeks are...

1 - Twilight Princess
2 - Monkey Ball
3 - Raving Rabbids

Those 3 games, along with Wii Sports, will keep me well-amused for some time. Man, I'm laughing right now typing this just thinking about those damn bunnies yelling. HA HA, that game is going to rule.

I'm definitely going for ExciteTruck as one of those games-to-get-at-the-same-time-as-the-system...I'll probably shell out $60 for a second controller set, too.

I'm totally jazzed for this thing. The more I read up on it, the more I want one. I'm not totally sold on Zelda yet though. I really liked the control on Wind Waker, so I might actually just wait for the GC version. That is unless the Wii version is just THAT GOOD. But, I think that game, Monkey Ball, and maybe Trauma Center should pass enough time for me. I think Rayman looks funny, but I just don't know if I want to own it. Overall though, I'm very excited about the Wii launch. And, seeing the new display up at a local Target it really sunk in that we are close. I can't wait.
