Installing on an old machine now. Receiving the key was easy following PaP's links.

Now I have to wait a long time for it to install... It's not connected to the internet so hopefully it won't have any troubles.

You guys think it'll run on a 500mhz P3 with 8mb of on-board ATI Rage graphics? This is going to be fun.

OH! Oh, damn it! The damn hard drive on that thing isn't even big enough for the 16gb requirement.

Oh well. If only someone would let me borrow a non-dial-up-age computer.

Got my key first thing this morning without any hassle. The download link wouldn't do anything though, for some reason. So I snagged a torrent. Still taking a ridiculous amount to download, considering the number of seeds.

I'm actually thinking about trying it on my 600 mhz Athlon Classic with a 16mb Voodoo3 2000 (Compaq Presario 5868!).

I used Pap's method but I did 5 tabs with reloading in 1 second intervals(see the custom option). I got 4 key's in less than a hour.

For those of you who have installed windows 7: How much disk space does it consume? Surely it's not 16gb, is it?

Seems like Vista used somewhere around six. I wouldn't expect much bigger, if any, for 7.

Christ... I finally booted up the system and it's just completely filled with bloatware. Using Windows 98 again after a decade makes you look back and wonder why you were so completely stupid.

Got it installed as of now. It seems to be pretty quick, but I don't have the usual stuff installed and running in the background, so I get to see what is compatible and what isn't sometime tomorrow.

I would download and install on my older PC, Win2k is really being a pain in the ass with it. Shame it's 2.4gB to download, I'll run out of quota *facepalm*.

Kinda want to download it but I dont think it will run on my old computer (Athlon 1.4GHz with 512MB of RAM). Plus I would need to get a new HDD because all my others are too valueable for MS to bugger up!

I've installed the leaked version on a Dell D430, 1.2Ghz, 2Gb ram, 32Gb solid state disk, as I couldn't get it to install on my XenServer (Crashed one of the other clients actually - Never saw that before).. Runs fairly well on the small box and definitely faster than Vista. And the new(er) Wireless Conf thingy is excellent !..

I'll give this one a go on the XenServer and report back what happens..

I got a key (getting one is easy now) but was wondering if they expire before the date when the beta expires (August 1st). Also can you burn the iso to a DVD-RW?

Because I want to get the iso and key now but maybe use it later like in a month or so when I have the right stuff to test it on. Keen to see whether it runs PTC Pro Engineer Wildfire 4.0.

Robin.

Do the iso links posted in this thread need keys in order to use them? if so where do you get these? Also can you burn the iso to a DVD-RW?

You can install it without a key, but only for a short time (30 days?) like any other version of Windows.

And yes, you can burn it to an RW.

Downloading...

Don't forget that if you're installing to a virtual machine, you don't need to burn the ISO to DVD. Just mount the ISO file as a DVD drive in the VM and you're laughing.

Could you also use Daemon Tools?

I know the beta expires August 1st but do the keys have a limited time of operability if I got mine today and used it months from now?

Nope... The key doesn't expire - So should you decide to wait till late July with the actual installation - By all means ;-)

[Edit:] And yes. If you're doing a test install on say Microsoft VPC, you can use DT for mounting the image. Which I can't see why you would, since MsVPC mounts isos natively :-/

I'm downloading the 64 bit version right now, to install in my new rig. People using the pre-beta said it's much lighter than Vista, and it runs almost any programs that run on Vista with no problem.

I won't use it as my main OS though, of course.

So the beta doesnt end until August. Does that mean the full release wont be until winter 09 or even early 2010?

Nah 16gb is lies, my Virtual Hard Disk that I have it installed on it only 10gb and it doesn't use all of that. I would say about 7gb it needs.

Is the 16Gb to ensure that there is enough space for future updates and things like that?

@ FatAssBR: Thanks, I was expecting it a lot earlier than that but I suppose its still not too far away.

It's scheduled for a January 2010 release.

Microsoft have promised RTM in August, ready for OEM shipment in PCs for Christmas. The Betas for Vista expired when the product went RTM, so that's consistent.

No luck with neither the 32bit or 64bit version on top of Xen Express :-/

That's a shame. VMware Server and Virtual PC both claim to support it. I'm not installing 'till I've done my Vista rebuild (next week), so I can't comment until then.

Mabye but I don't think Microsoft have ever quoted space for possible updates before.

VPC does support it, thats what i'm using but the virtual CPU can make it extremely slow.
Command Prompt inside VPC shows 100% usage.
Command Prompt in host system shows 33% usage

Actually...I'm running on a 150GB partition and have ~22GB used already with only Firefox and AVG installed so far. Its very possible that there is an 8GB or larger page file created to match my RAM, so I'm going to track down where to change that to see if that is why.

Edit: Yep, 8.5GB of that used space is a page file. ;)

Edit2: WINDOWS 7 USES DIRECTX 11!!

Edit3: Also a hibernation file that was 6GB...

Yeah, I'm gonna put it on the M1710.

Edit: Or, rather, would, except the Microsoft page is being dumb again.

Eww so Windows 7 is RAM friendly but hates Hard Drive space. Must be microsofts cunning plan to cut down the amount of pron on peoples PC's.

The pagefile and hibernation files will usually each expand to roughly match your RAM. It's the same in Vista. If I recall the 7 installation is actually a bit smaller than Vista.

If you want to clear up some room on your partition you can disable the hibernation file by opening a command prompt with admin priviledges and typing powercfg.exe -h off. You can also set the pagefile to a certain size if you want (or disable it completely – not recommended!).

Well, with 1.5TB hard drives being just over $100 now, a healthy sized page file isn't really an inconvenience.
