So, is this on official release now? I want to try and use it with Boot Camp but don't fancy shelling out on the full thing just to test it! Anyone got any suggestions? I think I can get it with a bit of money off due to a pre-order discount but are there any other ways of getting it to test legally?

As GT3Mich says, you can still download the release candidate, which has been more or less totally stable on my laptop for nearly three months now. The only lockups I've had are - I suspect - because of a lack of proper drivers for it from Dell (I've been using Vista x64 drivers).

The pre-order discount ends in August, so be quick!

No. The version most everyone is using is Windows 7 rc. And its free. Go here and pick your flavor.

Thanks for your help, both of you! I'll give the release candidate a go as soon as I've got the latest Boot Camp update 👍

EDIT: I'm trying to download it now but the download manager says it's stopping the download, I've only got to 2%! Why the bloody hell can Microsoft still not do anything well?! Any ideas how to fix it guys? It won't go past 2% no matter what I do.

EDIT 2: Now the download has dissappeared completely. This has reminded me very quickly why I switched to a Mac.

EDIT 3: I removed the link from my desktop to see if I could start the download from 0 again, but now it's gone to 0% and has got stuck on 'Stopping' again. WHY CAN'T MICROSOFT JUST MAKE THINGS WORK LIKE APPLE CAN? I give up. One chance to redeem themselves and they failed at 2%. God I love my Mac.

Were you using Microsoft's download manager?

I've downloaded both the Beta and the RC versions a few times, with and without the download manager and there was no problems. Also, there are millions of people who downloaded and are using the RC, so the problem is probably on your end.

I'm thinking of pre-ordering this too, the RC has been working great on my desktop. I'm only having problems making Battlefield 2 work, which is odd because it worked on the Beta release.

I was using their download manager, yes. I've never had an issue with any downloads on this computer in the year I've had it. Why don't they just put it up as a normal download?!

I've downloaded the 32 bit version twice and the 64 bit version once without any problems so I have no idea why you're having problems. It is a slow dl but it still worked.

Maybe try to download without using the download manager.

When my HDD broke down a few weeks ago I downloaded Win7 using Firefox from an Ubuntu Live CD and saving it directly to a USB stick.

Sorry for the bump, but recently my friend came across a particularly (good?) offer for Windows 7 which appeals to us, and probably some of you guys.

Windows
We are offering students the opportunity to buy Windows 7 for an amazing discounted price, £30 for either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional.

You can take advantage of this offer from September 30th but you will need to be quick as it is for a limited time only and is only eligible to college and university students with a valid .EDU email address (an email address given by the college or university, for example: Suzanne@leeds.ac.uk ), a PC that is currently running a genuine copy of Windows Vista or Windows XP and can run Windows 7.

This offer will be available from 1st October so please check back then for details on how to take advantage of this great offer.

So is it worth it for that money? I mean, I'd love a Mac in the long run but for someone working on a extremely tight budget would upgrading my XP Media Centre to 7 be beneficial? I'm intrigued to hear your opinions.

Well, we get given college e-mail addresses. But are told to change them as you can only access them on-site.

I'm pretty sure if your univeristy has a MSDN thingy licence anyway you can download it for free?

Yup, that's how I got 7 - my uni is a member of the MSDNAA and being a computer science student there I can order a fair few MS programs* and whatnot from the MSDNAA website. 👍

* Visual Studio 2005 and 2008, XP, Vista (x4), 7 x86 and x64

So I got it yesterday and I love it...(Upgraded from XP Home 32-bit to Business 64-bit...had to reinstall everything but it just moved all my old files to another folder...no format required! [OEM version at local MicroCenter for 130, normally 150])

What are some cool/good features I can do with it?

Mines in the mail, I got it for $40 which was a pretty good deal. I'm waiting to install it though, I should be building a new computer in January so I just going to do it then. I've already played around with it though since some of my friends are on MSDN. I like it.

Straight from the fanboy's mouth: You people really shouldn't have bothered with Windows 7, because "Vista + XP = 7," and "XP mode is a joke and an insult to intelligent buyers everywhere."

Great, I have no email. My two main email accounts are with MSN. I have MSN Premium service with Verizon IS. For some reason, it doesn't work with Windows 7. A fix can be two, three weeks away.

Do any of you know what's the best way of getting my email with those two MSN email accounts?

Can you not just go to http://login.live.com/ sign in and then click on Mail?

Edit: How about this?

Yeah, I used something similar. I got it sorted out.

Odd, I have the mail Icon in the Windows 7 command bar, but clicking on it doesn't work. I get the warning, "...default mail client is not properly installed, yarda, yarda, yarda."

At least I have my mail, and MSN Messenger service, so I'm happy for the time being. I still want my MSN Premium, though.

It took just short of 3 hours to download, an hour or so to back up my drive, 3 hours to install and another for updates but 7 is up and running.

3 hours to install? Wow. (Takes us like 30mins on the customer computers @ work—had one install in 10.)

👍 Microsoft killed Windows Mail and replaced it with Windows Live Mail, but doesn't ship it with the OS. No idea why they did that.

That, I think had something to do with an FTC arbitration regarding MS's market dominance. They did the same thing with IE8 and Windows Media Player in Europe.

Was that a fresh install or an update? The 3 hours was also to copy over all of my installed programs and settings. It would have been decidedly shorter, I'd imagine, for a clean W7 install but then I'd have to go hunt down all my programs and install them again. Think I'll pass on that this time around. Maybe when the weather gets crappier and I don't have anything else to do.

Wha....? 10 minutes? 7 installed on my laptop in about 40 minutes, and it's far from slow... what sort of specs did that computer have? :scared:
Yeah 40 minutes sounds about right, actually for a Laptop that is pretty impressive!:D:tup:
I'm currently running Vista Premium, I can't see me updating anytime soon...Vista is handling all my programs and is going like a train so I'm happy for now.:)

I think it was 40 minutes. Might've been closer to 60, but I don't really remember, that was a fair while ago.

Just wanted to let everyone know that you may want to steer clear of Comodo Firewall as well as pay a little extra attention to Avast! Antivirus in Windows 7. Comodo will cause the system to lock on a blank screen and quit responding to all inputs when you run most full screen applications. Avast!'s "on-access scanner" is what you want to disable when you're playing games. It eventually causes crashes. I think its trying to scan files that are in use by the application and the conflict will crash the app. Not as bad as Comodo locking the system entirely though (background processes continue, but no system response). Just disabled the on-access scanner when you think it might matter.

Bought a new HP Pavillion DV6 yesterday with Windows 7 pre-installed. Everything is going really well so far. Although it was advertised to have a 512mb ATI raedon graphics card and it dosent, I am annoyed over that, I dont plan on playing many games on this but do you guys think Win7 will be ok with 64mb intel graphics card?
