Windows Vista RC1 is complete! (Windows Vista Team Blog)

TechBeta and TAP will get their hands on the build first, then MSDN and TechNet subscribers will be offered access to it next week. Microsoft did not say when they will make RC1 available to the public (via the Customer Preview Program).

Edgy Eft Knot 2 Now Available (Information and Download Links)

The Ubuntu team has made the second alpha release of Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy Eft" available for download. Firefox 2.0 Beta, Gaim 2.0 Beta, and GNOME 2.16 RC1 are included in Knot 2.

New Build for Leopard Preview (Apple Insider)

The first update for Leopard Preview, Build 9A241e, is now available through Software Update for developers testing the next version of OS X. This update fixes some stability issues and provides minor fixes to applications such as AddressBook, Dashboard, Expose, Mail, Spaces, Spotlight and Time Machine.

So did Microsoft, Canonical, and Apple get together and decide that they were going to release updates on the same day?
Ha, that rocks.

I'm downloading the Ubuntu thing right now - I've been running my laptop on 6.06, so I'll switch to 6.10 for the heck of it.
I see that there's been quite a bit of discussion lately.

My computer, with 512MB RAM and 80GB HDD, Pentium 4 2.8GHz, Beta 2 ran stably, but not fast. The CPU usage was always hovering at around 50% even at idle.
Beta 2 was slow as all get-out compared to the newest builds.

Pentium D 2.8Ghz @ 3.5Ghz (Vista takes advantage of the dual-core processor far more than XP did)
1GB DDR2
250GB SATA3.0 7200RPM
6600-nonGT 256MB

It's certainly not a beast, but it runs the OS flawlessly.

Thats way better than my current pc. I wonder if it would run good at all on my pc.

I heard everyone else gets it within the next week. Dunno if its true but it would be nice.

I have acquired a copy of RC1, and it's good, but not a whole lot different from the Pre-RC1 release.

So yeah. I did install it on my laptop, which isn't that great (1.73GHz Pentium-M, 1.25GB DDR2, Intel GMA900 Video, 80GB 4200RPM HD), and it runs pretty well (albiet it doesn't let me enable Aero, but that's okay as I doubt it would've run very well anyways).

Man oh man look at this price for Vista Ultimate:

Full package: $399.00 - £211.77
Upgrade: $259.00 - 112.39

I rather go for the upgrade, since I have Windows XP Home.

Good call. 👍

And while I have already downloaded the ISO, I just checked MS's servers to see how they were fairing, and right now they're pretty snappy.

After using RC1 (been using it for a few days now), I don't think I can go back to XP. While Windows Vista is very familiar; meaning you won't have to learn anything new; it has many great additions. Going back to XP would mean I would have to give up a lot of my favorite features. The new Basic Interface is very attractive (sadly, I can't enable Aero). Everything, from the buttons, live folders, icons, and colors, is polished. The search is great, and the various applications that came with Vista aren't too bad. Overall, I am impressed with RC1.

Another thing I like about Vista is how Microsoft got rid of the "My..." naming scheme. Now "Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, and Downloads" are all inside your username folder. It makes more sense than "My Videos" inside the "My Documents" folder.

With that said, I am planning to use RC1 as my primary operating system. I will probably keep it until Edgy is released. Who knows, I might go back to Vista since I have until June 2007. I'll have more later.

I know exactly what you mean. Like I said, I've installed Vista on both my laptop and my desktop, and it was for a reason: After deciding to use Vista as my main OS for the desktop, not having some of the features on the laptop was killing me. Granted, I don't have Aero on my laptop, I still have everything else, and there is quite a bit.

👍

Damn, you two are lucky.

The download doesn't seem to be working. It either says "failed" or "connecting" forever. Plus even with Vista I don't have internet connection, which is pretty much the final blow for me.

In the past with older Vista builds, I've had to force it to use XP drivers for some devices that it wouldn't installed. They all worked fine, however I haven't needed to do that with more recent builds of Vista as it appears they've improved driver support.

Just curious. What scores are you guys getting on the 'Windows Experience Index'?
scoreim4.jpg

I'm seriously let down by my Video card (FX5200), but I can still run Aero with no slow-down. Although I noticed today that while my CPU usage is minimal (Never really over 10%, mostly around 2%-5%) but I'm using almost 400mb of physical memory just idleing and running firefox.

That's about the amount of PF I use at idle as well.

I don't remember what the desktop gets (3.x, down by the video card on that PC as well), but on my laptop I get a 1. :sly:

Yup. Integrated video.👍

So I assume 1.0 is the best score?
It's probably his video card or something along those lines - The Vista performance score is based on the lowest rated component in his computer. Like in my laptop, where I got a 1.0 score, it is due to the video card (integrated gma900).

Oh, if that's what you meant, then Burnout is right. Your computer is rated by its weakest link, which in my case is the graphics (Although it's strange, when I installed Beta 2, my score was 2.0).

Theoretically, I could score double or triple :scared: digits in every other category, but if my graphics is still rated 1.0, then Windows Experience Index will rate my whole system 1.0.

Are you using:
  • IE6 + Akamai Download Manager?
  • IE7 + Akamai Download Manager?
  • Firefox's download manager?

I'm using IE7 + download manager. And yeah, it makes a 971KB file and just stops. No more action.

About the driver: I don't know whether if the wireless card utility is able to work with Vista RC1 but during my usage of Beta 2, it kept on saying that the program cannot be installed because it isn't compatible with Vista. It annoyed the hell out of me and the next day, I reformatted the computer. Hopefully RC1 will be able to work with my driver.

Have you tried both the download manager link, and the non-download manager link? Personally I've never used the link for use with download managers.

You could also try other technologies for attaining the ISO (it's not illegal to attain the ISO in such a way; attaining the activation key from such sources would be however).

I got a mail from Microsoft with a link to the download. I chose the 32-bit version - like I'm supposed to - and then it lead to me a website, and told me to wait for a few moments. Then the window closes and the download manager starts.

Well if I can't get it this way I'll have to resort to BitTorrent....I already have the key anyway, so it's not illegal is it?

Its not illegal if you're downloading something like this. Its only illegal if you use bittorrent to download movies, music, etc.

'PROBABLY FULL'? It's that suppose to help me in anyway?! It's like it's saying, 'I think it's full, but to be honest, I have no idea....'

Well, "something bad" happened to one of my applications.

I expected a "There was an error in..." but I guess they're going for the more casual approach. I don't know what the problem is, but at least I know it was something bad.

Wow, now that's a different approach. I'm used tot the "Error..." thing so much that reading that sentence was kinda weird.
