Anyone else finish missions way above their level?
No missions, but I did try my hand at some ?s way above my level. Tend to grow impatient on some of them, however.

Either way, it seems like the XP bug finally caught me. Just finished the 'Family Matters' quest, which wasn't greyed out yet - should've given XP, as such. Didn't get any, though... Escaped that issue for a good bit, but I might have lost a bunch of XP still as I'm not sure at which point of the quest line the damn issue triggered. Might have to pick up at an earlier save just to make sure. The patch to fix that bug is due tomorrow for the PC version, luckily. Hope none of you guys are affected.

I haven't experienced it, but I only received 250 exp for that Level 23 Contract. I expected more. Over an hour of hacking, healing, and repairing.

Hmmmm, I do recall a few quests where no xp was given. Should every quest give xp?
Not every quest. There's a bunch that don't. Basically, quests only give you any XP if the level recommendation is at most five levels below your own. Any lower than that and they get greyed out, meaning they don't net you any XP. Quests not tied to fighting, it seems, are greyed out by default - like the Gwent quests, for example.

That's normal. The XP requirement to level up doesn't rise that quickly and most side quests don't get you a lot of XP. The biggest chunk of your XP will come from the main quests. And don't worry, the bug doesn't lower the amount of XP a quest awards, it negates the XP completely. If you get Xp for a quest, regardless of the amount, you're good 👍

Here's a Reddit post detailing the bug. That's where I learned of the bug.

Did make ma bit paranoid, though

Let's see, "hot blonde" would be "attractive" yes?

:)

Level 13 and have been chipping away at a couple level 23 Royal Wyvern's for the past half hour. He down, one to go. Yikes.

I think I saw those while doing some exploration and hoofed it the other way.

No longer accidentatlly igniting candles! Yay :D

The XP bug is also going to get fixed in 1.05. CDPR is doing some good work, fixing whatever issue is creeping up post release. Rockstar, PD, most everyone, take note! :D

Correction. There were actually three. After you kill the two level 23 Wyverns, then you have to take on the Royal Wyvern. The largest Geralt has seen. So yeah, it is ways to just keep on hoofin it! :)

Of all the patches, I am most excited about the annoyance of lighting dominance over opening chests. YAY! :D

Wow, had no idea..... 42.5 hours of game play and only level 13. Really? 42 hours? Doesn't feel like it. Kudos to any game that can keep my attention past 20 hours any more.

Well I'm glad of the patch and like you @Pako , the candles on chests etc will be a welcome fix.

As for the game I wonder if larger and dedlier enemies which are at the end of quests (inc side quests) level up with you.

I picked up a witcher contract "Jenny Of The Woods" and they dont have a sugested level you need to be at, (some show in red) but this didn't. I'm Lvl 10 and full witcher gear with specter oil etc andfound the battle very tricky.

I found that tricky to. Can't remember there not being a level indicator on it though.

Umm maybe someone here can help me, I'm nearly stuck, not sure what to do lol.

I'm level 6 and I did the quest with the witch looking for Ciri. She told me about a sorcerer with a mask. We proceed to a cave where you search for that sorcerer that guide Ciri with signs. Once you find the signs labyrinth there's a golem you have to kill, which I did but then you fight the one of the icy guys (not sure how they are called in english since I play in french), here comes my problem, I dont have any life left or barely and no food left after the exploring of the poison area.
So is there any way to retrieve some life maybe at least ? Or do I have to load a save before this and go once I'm a bit stronger ?

Before you go into the battle do Meditation for a few hours, this will ensure your health is full and your oils and potions are restocked.

Makes you wonder why there are so many candles around loot anyway.

I think I had that quest at a recommended level of 10 or 11. I enhanced my armor and weapon at Midcopse, but it wore off since I had to meditate until night to have her appear. The battle mostly involved dodging and waiting for good opportunities when the wraith is trapped with Yrden. Usually when I don't wait and get hasty, that's when I die.

Yeah, try finding a place you can meditate beforehand, and possibly lower the difficulty.

:embarrassed: I didnt use meditation yet, guess i need to learn a bit about it ^^

Thanks guys :)

No problem. Happy to help.

My personal tactic before boss fights or bandit camps is.

1. Arrive at desired location
2. Meditate 2 hours (Heath goes up and oils etc restock)
3. Oil sword and make sure all bombs/potions/special items and signs are sorted out and equipped.
4. Save game

This way, if you die you can just reload and everything is set up before you have another try and you don't have to spend any more time and get on with kicking ass and taking names.

Seems like the patch will go live on Tuesday, maybe even Wednesday. Oh well, another day or two of dodging candles ain't gonna kill nobody

Same here. I'm just over 40 hours in and I've still to venture into Novigrad. I've got like 35 question marks left to uncover in Velen

Opponents don't level with you, not even the Witcher Contract ones... it's just that some creatures are naturally difficult. Personally, I hate Wraiths of all kinds. They force you to use Yrden or the Moon Dust bomb to even hit them properly - limits your options quite a bit (I tend to use Quen for defense - I'm SOL if I have to spend my stamina otherwise... :indiff:) and their move set can be quite nasty. Teleporting around and taking double swings at you and whatnot. Yuk.

I'd rather fight a level 15 Wyvern than a level 12 Noonwraith, honestly :grumpy:

I just quicksave and bum rush stuff  If it goes wrong, I load and prepare.

The 2 most useful signs for me have been Yrden and Quen so far. I didn't really use the other ones so much. Once in a while Aard comes in handy. Did anybody else find the same or make use of the other signs?

In Witcher 2, I think I did more hack n slash mixed with Igni.

Yess the signs always come in handy for every human or non human monster you fight.

Axii for temporarily mesmerizing humans or monsters. Quen for protecting yourself as you deal with humans with hammers or axes or monsters especially the wild warrior. Igni for shooting fire at drowners, ghouls, bears even humans. Aard works against bears too before shooting Igni fire at them. the Arrd seems to lower their life a little bit aswell.

Before fighting wraiths or noonwraiths I use Yrden against them. Then I use scepter oil on my silver sword. You can use the Arrd to shoot the telekinetic blast at hard to reach areas or doors you can't open which aren't locked. You can also use it to clear rubble or stacks of wood in your way to loot. If you can't use Igni fire to burn some entrances down you can at least try the Aard telekinetic blast to knock them down. using Arrd or fire is important in finding secret rooms or areas with lots of goodies, books, letters, weapons and other artifacts to discover.

I started the game all over again. And I'm still in White Orchard. I'm currently completing all the side quests and questions marks and finding the places of power. I've just completed the Dessert Gold treasure quest. Also I made it to the top of the windmill but the door is locked. Does anyone have any idea where I can find the key for the locked chest where the treasure is and where the key for the windmill is too????

I find Axii useful for stunning single opponents. Aard for crumbling walls, against shield bearers and to put fires out. Igni... Well, to take down bee hives to harvest honey combs  They're going to be more useful if you're investing skill points into that tree.

I defeated the Jenny o' the Woods some time ago, and it was pretty annoying. Wraiths in general are pretty annoying too. I was doing the Red Baron quest and one segment of it requires you to face three or so waves of Wraiths. One of the most annoying set of battles for me. Seems like you have to know where every Wraith is so when they teleport you can dodge away once they reappear. Setting Yrden seems to help too since it slows 'em down.

Funny that Kotaku thinks playing on Easy is better than playing on Hard..

Yeh the Red Baron one is a pain. The section with the vampire too has a ton of wraiths and on my second attempt they all
Seem to congregate at the entrance for some reason so I had to take on about 8 in one go. Was not a fun experience.

I've heard of people adjusting the difficulty to kill certain bosses. Personally I'll keep where I'm at and just keep trying until I do it.

 you mad bro. I have to be prepared or I'd be a wreck after an hour or two of gaming.

Yeah... I hated that fight. Won against a level 20 Royal Wyvern just now - easy compared to some wraiths around my own level. Just dodge and slash, dodge and slash, dodge and slash

That's what they wrote:
The result is a game that locks you into long swing animations against your will. Geralt comes from the school of twirling his sword around like a helicopter while running at the enemy. Mind you, this comes after the beginning scene when he criticises Ciri for being too showy.
The system doesn’t give you the tools you need to solve combat problems like an enemy lunging at you. I see the enemy coming, I know what I’d like to do, but I also know if I press that button, my attack will be interrupted.
Seems to me like they've yet to find the B-button on their game pad or map the dodge button on their keyboard - I can cancel my attack animation into a sidestep or a roll just fine  Also, every other sign or bomb might just help out - but, yeah, let'em set the difficulty to easy and whine a little - that's bound to be less of a hassle than to actually come to grips with the game's mechanics, right? :D

Oh Kotaku, y u so silly?

 you mad bro. I have to be prepared or I'd be a wreck after an hour or two of gaming.
Just a little :D

Well, I do prepare - kinda. I oil my blade to match what I'm facing, but I do so on the fly. That said, it works rather well. Most of the stuff (wraiths and stuff WAY above my own level) goes down easy enough that I've been pondering whether to play on Death Match or not, actually... Might hold off with that for a bit, though - I want to get my build fleshed out a little more beforehand.

I think I'm going to set the difficulty a bit higher actually. Playing on normal now and it's quite easy.
The combat is not without its flaws, but I find it satisfying enough. Especially with bigger stronger enemies that you have to prepare for.

26 hours and 37 minutes in I'm level 14, but I have been doing a lot of quests lately and ignoring the world. I plan on checking out the question marks soon though which should hamper my level progression.

Awesome game. 👍

Too many distrations lastnight but can't wait to dive back into it today.

I really do miss this game when I can't sit down with it.

I can't say that about too many titles I've come across over the years.

Has anyone found the keys for the chest and the windmill for the dessert gold quest???

It's found on a body on a riverbank close by, this key opens another box close to the body and has another key inside this (I think) this then opens the chest close to the windmill underground.

The windmill can't be opened.

Ohhhh yeah!

It's real bad for me. I actually sat down and toyed around with a skill calculator during my lunch break today. This is what I came up with as my final build :D
