Witcher 3

Kinda... Alchemy is part of your skill tree, crafting, however, isn't. Depends on the level of the merchant you're visiting.

Agreed, some of the side quests have better writing than some games I've played

What's more, the game's size is almost intimidating. I've got close to thirty hours on the clock and seen maybe a third of what Velen has to offer. Haven't set foot into Novigrad, Skellige or Khaer Modan yet

Correction noted.

I totally agree. It's got as many question marks as Farcry 4 but I don't dread going after them. :D

I have yet to feel like it's grinding at all. It's an adventure with benefits. ;)

That's one aspect of open world games that often gets annoying, when doing side quests and other non main story line quests, they feel repetitive and too much of a chore.

This game however isn't that way. There have been a few secondary quests that while I was involved in, felt like main quests.

Sorry for this dumb question but you are using the cross road symbols?

View attachment 373973

Not just that specific one. If you go to one then click (X) this will open the map and then you can select the area you want by choosing the closest symbol and it will then allow you to fast travel.

This video shows it best.

This is exactly what I was trying to do. But the problem is there are no crossroad symbols on my map that look like that green axe in white orchard. So I can't get to white orchard. I've currently just battled and beat the wild hunt warrior. Now I've found a place of power by helping Keira the witch and fighting a golem. I just don't know why there are no axe symbols at white orchard. Maybe it's because I didn't discover the ? And places of power, and I didn't complete the side quests there. When I did find an axe symbol like that HTTP told me I could not fast travel. But as I said I am at the part of the game where you battle teams defeat the wild hunt warrior nithran.

That's exactly how I feel. Even though I'm not far in to the game I can't wait to adventure forth and work for my advancement rather than just grind my way there.

Yeh I've also done the Wild Hunt guy. He's pretty mean to beat but doable at low levels.

It's weird how the crossroad symbol isn't in White Orchard. The location of it is next to the Inn by the stables and the Merchant guy you help at the beginning of the game.

Absolutely!

For me, it's mostly because the world feels alive. A random Witcher Contract might not be meaningful in the grand scheme of Geralt's journey, but CDPR managed to convey the feeling that it's important to whomever's the contractor. Tough for me to put it into (English) words, to be honest... But the world feels authentic, organic. My actions feel meaningful, therefore. I know I'm dealing with scripted NPCs, but in the context of their world, they matter - and so do the problems I'm solving. That's probably the highest praise I can give to a game of this genre. Whether it's Skyrim or Dark Souls or World of WarCraft (bit of a stretch, I know), nothing seems to matter, aside from the main story. And even that doesn't feel very meaningful, oftentimes.

CDPR didn't do something extraordinary, to be quite honest, but the game's so well executed and lovingly crafted... They claimed it was a labour of love and for once, I'm inclined to believe a developer when saying that.

Be that as it may, let's talk character builds :D I'm a bit of a min-maxer at heat and I've got an alchemy-combat based build sketched out in my head. What do you guys plan on doing with your Geralt?

Yep. I feel the same. Everything is so well connected and it actually feels like your actions have a meaningful consequence. You get the typical exploration with some good loot, but it doesn't become repetitive because they made the experience more involved, engrossing, etc. It's not just here's a contract and you get some coin at the end. The developers earned every penny they get. I also like their plan for the DLCs. Unfortunately, games like this only come once in a while. Maybe I should have played Skyrim before this. I feel that I'll be disappointed after this.

I'm probably doing a lazy build as usual. Increase the sword damage(light and strong attacks) and throw in some defense (upgrade quen).

@Luminis Very well said. Yes, I find I am emotionally invested at times. What a great way to draw a player into the game.

I swing a lot, and I throw magic a lot. I throw fast attacks for some enemies, and strong attacks on others.

I NEED IT ALL!!! :-)

That will be the hardest for me is coming to a point where I need to either be really good at something or just mediocre at everything.

I'm really not sure if the game will lend itself to letting me build up all the abilities I want, still to early to tell. If I do all the side quests, I may find enough experience to do just that.

I have to say, there is nothing more gratifying than cutting a bandit from head to toe on horse back! Oh yeah! The sound, the blood, the body split open like a banana. That is THE BEST! :D

I'll try it again tomorrow. Now I have a new problem. Fighting this golem in this place of power after wandering in the dark. Can you fast travel from anywhere even if your in an objective with keira like fighting a golem? Can I just fast travel from the map to wherever or do I have complete this stage and find a crossroads sign? I already tried a fast travel sign a while back and it didn't work. Even when it said press X to fast travel. I noticed the fast travel symbol the AXE had a red line through it on the KEY table above that tells you what all the icons are. It's as though fast travel isn't available to me for some reason.

Hehe, I had a good one where a group of bandits tried to gank me last night. I jumped off my horse and cut them all down. The last one was standing at the top of a hill, and I chopped his head off and then watched it roll all the way down to the bottom where it got stuck on one of his mates corpses. :D Justice!

The game does a fantastic job of making combat really satisfying.

As far as I can tell you're restricted to what you can and can't do while mid mission. I don't fast travel that often so haven't tried while doing a quest like that Lamp one.

As far as I know, you can Fast Travel to anywhere, whenever you reach a signpost, regardless of what you are currently doing (otherwise you wouldn't be able to Fast Travel to the next part of your current quest).

Wasn't too sure as I tend not to do FT and either Roach it or run it.

I checked again today and there are no fast travel points in white orchard. And the axe icon still has a red line through it. Why oh why do I have this problem and no one else. I decided to bypass the golem and go through the invisible cloaked door and complete the Magic Lamp quest. The objective just says Ladies of the Wood, " Find the crones of Crookback Bog" use your Witcher Sesnses to fin the shrine that marks the start of the trail of treats. Should I be able to fast travel at this point. And can anyone help me figure out whats going on. I might have to post a video of my problem.

Sorry if the video isn't very good.

Made a huge mistake... See, I initiative hated Gwent. Sat down and got to terms with it because I had a quest about playing and winning against the Baron.

And I'm starting to like it. I might just start to sink my teeth into it. Not like the game needs another time sink

/edit:
Don't know if anyone wants to use this, but there's an interactive map showing all the hidden locations and Gwent players and whatnot in Velen and Novigrad.

@wraith of horus looks like you've got a bug then fella. I've been FT back to White Orchard today and it worked and I had two FT points. One near the Inn and one at the Barracks at the north West of the map.

On another note. I have now got the full Gryffin set. And have crafted a greater Blue mutagen.

Got the Griffin set, too. Well, except for the steel sword (found a Relic that's better) and the trousers (same). Still a great set until I can get my hands on the Ursine Gear.

Personally, I'm a bit pissed at how much rarer red mutagens are compared to blue and green ones. I've already slotted a greater green mutagen but haven't been able to find a single lesser red one. Gotta consider myself lucky to have a werewolf mutagen. Still sucks, though.

/edit:
Anyone else finding the crossbow to be ridiculously useless, aside from insta gibbing stuff under whater?

I agree about mutagens. I only have one red one. It's came from the vampire thing while getting the Gryffin school stuff. Must admit they missed a trick by not being able to combine special mutagens.

Say Gryffin mutegens give you access to a special ability linked to signs, once you have the greater version and it's equipped it opens the skill tree and then you can upgrade it as normal.

All the other special mutegens then have different abilities linked to different attribute types.

I've already crafted a better silver sword but I can't use it until I get to Lvl 13/14.

Agreed. Especially since CDPR established the different effects of the named mutagens with the decoctions already. Then again, having red, green and blue mutagens that did something other than increasing attack power, vitality and sign intensity respectively might have made the system a bit too complex.

I've already crafted a better silver sword but I can't use it until I get to Lvl 13/14.
I have the feeling we've got the same sword sitting in our inventory :D

I think you could be correct. :)

What I love is, normally I would be getting annoyed I couldn't use it yet and really not be happy or looking forward to levelling up to get the better gear. With Witcher I actually cannot wait to get back into the wild and get more loot etc.

I've found a few caves which are not marked on my map too. I need to explore them to find out if they are linked to others or just random small places.

This is my first Witcher game and I'm loving it.

I'm desperately trying to avoid it, because otherwise I'll never get to the end of the game. :)

I'm hoping I can come back later and clean up all the gwent stuff, because it looks kind of fun. Otherwise it might have to be on a second playthrough or something. ;)

And that's a fantastic map link. Again, I'm going to try and avoid such things for a while, but it's a great tool when you don't want to have to talk to ever snaggle toothed inbred hick on the whole map just to find the one gwent player you're missing. ;)

I like the way you think  That's pretty much what I bookmarked it for. Knowing myself, I'd miss something sooner or later. Being my usual self, I could not let such stuff go... But I still hate combing such a huge world for what I missed

In Gwent news, I just finished the "Velen Players" quest. Dang, that fisherman was hugely annoying. Faired much better against the lil' Slowpoke and the geezer. I so want to get a Monster deck going, though. If only because having Eredin as the faction leader is awesoooome :D

Well, I am in the second area (Velen and Novigrad?). First priority was to visit as many Notice Boards as I could (a few were inaccessible). The map is now covered in ? symbols and I have a fair number of quests at differing levels. Even managed my first boat trip! Avoided a particularly difficult Level 10 enemy until later. I'm only Level 5.

I seem to have somehow got into the habit of playing the game on alternate days! I have been slightly distracted by Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on the 3DS, though that seems to be on the same alternate days!

Let's see, "hot blonde" would be "attractive" yes?

:)

Level 13 and have been chipping away at a couple level 23 Royal Wyvern's for the past half hour. He down, one to go. Yikes.

Anyone else finish missions way above their level?
