I don't see how they would recommend slice as a starter word - C is way less common than the five letters in the one you were using. I would say that any word that uses 3 out of a,e,i,o and 2 of n,r,s,t is as good as any. The mileage will vary depending on what the actual word is.

I wish it were easier to spot repeated letters... they tend to throw me off.

My best suggestion for a starting word is "Choose something with the lowest possible Scrabble Score". The letters in Scrabble are scored almost exactly in proportion to the letter's usage in the English language, so go for something with all 1-point scores. If that isn't to your liking, restrict yourself to D or G, which score 2, but nothing higher like B, M or F which score 3, 3 and 4 points respectively. The lower the scrabble score of your first few words, the better chance you have of finding a result sooner.
