Worst Liveries Of All Time

You lack a sence of history...the Pink Pig is truly iconic and belongs in The Best Liveries of All Time thread. In racing's last gasp before advertising and sponsorship took over, this was a response to using something other than national racing colors.
Just because it's iconic doesn't mean that it's good by default. It's a matter of personal taste - you can appreciate the history of something without necessarily liking it. I can appreciate what The Beatles did for music, but in all honesty, I don't like their music. The same logic applies here.

Oh, absolutely...I don't like the color pink, but I feel it gets a free pass for creativity and response. The purple-and-green 917 was also criticized in those times.

Off-topic at bit, but series where every car must use the same windshield banner drives me a bit nuts, design-wise. At least let the teams choose a color to their liking.

with the cut throat business F1 is now, they cant afford to be pick.
That's what they're doing, Ron said their title sponsor would have to fit the brand's philosophy.

So, like it or not, their current (and not that bad) livery will be here for a while.

title sponsor would have to fit the brand's philosophy? how egotistical of them.

And yet, they're doing just fine. Ron Dennis might have invented the idea of a close relationship between team and sponsor, but he reckons that the days of title sponsorship are over - it's too expensive for companies to invest in major sponsor deals.

Probably because major sponsors require a fair bit of the drivers' time away from testing, simulators, and other team tasks. Honda might also want to have a say in those matters. The sponsor(s) have to be respectful of that and probably wish to avoid supplier or associate corporate clashes with respect to those ties...still, it all depends on how much the team has in reserves, and McLaren might actually have trailer-loads; we'll know where that level is if the cars appear with Durex logos (with no disrespect to John Surtees).

Not at all. Brands have images associated with them. Look at car manufacturers - German cars emphasise precision engineering, Italian cars are flamboyant, American cars favour raw brawn, and French cars are like cotton candy; cute, but insubstantial.

The point is that all brands have an image that they project, qualities that they want the customer to identify and associate with. The product that the customer chooses will ultimately be down to their discretion, a decision made based on what they value, and there is an increasing trend towards intangible elements like corporate social responsibility - for example, green initiatives, a localises supply chain, ethical taxation practices, and so on. The same logic applies in a business-to-business transaction like a team seeking sponsorship. It's the reason why McLaren ran with Zain sponsorship instead of Vodafone in Bahrain back in 2013; Vodafone didn't want to have their name associated with the race following the protests and violence.

I might be colour-blind, but I'm not so colour-blind that I think this is anything other than a bad idea:

Light blue? Great! Bright green? Also good! Together? DO NOT WANT.

At least work some design into it. That just looks like his bonnet flew off and they stuck on the next spare one they had lying about.

I don't mind the colours so much, but it does need something more to break it up. I quite liked it when it was Gustl's livery... Much better than his Shell one for this year.

No offense, but man have the Japanese had some seriously ugly touring cars through the years! I mean I know we all have our bad days and occasionally those bad days end up being the paint on the racecar for the next season. Somehow, though, the different incarnations of the Japanese touring car series have never ceased to fail at producing some highly questionable design decisions.

I couldn't find any pictures of the real one and I'm not 100% sure if this livery ever saw the track. Regardless, just the thought that it was possibly being raced is enough for me to vote the Tatebayashi Skyline R32.

F1's worst this year by along way once again. which is sad as they had a chance of putting a great livery on this car.

I know that the McLaren was rather a let-down when it was unveiled because many (myself included) were hoping for a return of the red and white colours, but this isn't that bad. Certainly better than this year's Force India (which has completely lost it's own identity) and - I know many will disagree with me here - the Sauber, which to me looks like it's sporting a half-hearted paint job from a lower formula.

MotoGP, for me this is just awful.

I don't think this is too bad, though I much prefer their own factory colours (which are very similar to BMW's, come to think of it..)

Oh, and am I the only one who thinks those Rockstar RX cars look awesome?

Its a Shame all Modern Castrol Liverys are Terrible, their 90s Liverys in basically every catagory they sponsered where iconic, from the GT500 Supra, Celica WRC and even the Larry Perkins Commodores in V8SC.

Last Good Livery they Had would probably be the early 2000s GT500 NSX before they started promoting their Synthetic oils.

I don't know, the Castrol livery Toni Gardemeister used in WRC in 2005, was rather good actually.

The livery Honda used in 2013 WTCC season was rather good, too.

The Honda Civics one is not to bad, but not the best fit for the car(looks a bit cluttered), the Focus seems pretty bland though.

But none stick out like some of old ones did that basically made you look at them:

Can't find a good shot of it, but both Attempto racing Mclarens in the Blancpain Sprint Series are using a Hello Kitty livery.

This is like saying Goodsmile Racing liveries are bad.

Just in case anyone is wondering, here is an example...

Just look at the sheer kawaii-ness of that thing. :D Is there such a thing as Best Liveries thread in here? If so, I'd love to post this one over there as well.

There is, and that exact car was posted yesterday.
