bu bu bu bump!

Summer's almost over. Did anybody get to see a cool show this summer?
Foo fighters last night - great show. They even had Dave Grohl do drums for a bit :D

If I can find someone to take my extra ticket, I'll be seeing Gigantour on September 3. That'll be headlined by Megadeth, Dream Theater, and Fear Factory with 5 or 6 other bands doing 30 minute sets beforehand. Should make for a good 7 hour show

I'm gonna go see Andre Rieu when he comes to Miami with the Johan Strauss Orchestra in April. That should be an awesome "concert". I've only been to operas and symphonies...my only actual concerts were both mc chris shows, the 2nd of which rocked.

ah...i'd have to say that i've had 2 favorites...

my first concert outting was prolly the most memorable (only b/c it was the first concert i've ever been to...plus no chaperones!!) i went to see my all-time favorite american band Save Ferris. they were performing w/ Goldfinger & Sugar Ray (back when they only had the hit song "Fly"). Incubus was the opening act...that was weird. i got to see them perform even before they became wildly famous...now that i see them on MTV and stuff, it seems kinda weird. the best part ever....i was with a big group of friends and one of my friends gave me her autographed Save Ferris poster (absolutely free...no strings attatched). that rocked.

my second experience...hmmm...it would have to be the Puffy AmiYumi concert i went to last October. in case you don't know...Puffy AmiYumi is a japanese pop-rock band. they're famous for singing the Teen Titans cartoon theme song and the ending song "Friends Forever" for the Scooby Doo 2 movie. i've already seen them in concert twice, but my first time was the best. it started off w/ the opening band, Watashiwa. that band was ok...nobody was really feeling their vibe, so to get the crowd at least half-way excited. they offered to throw money into the audience. they only threw a lousy 2 dollars...but it was a 2 dollar bill nonetheless...and guess what? i caught the 2 dollar bill (by accident). it was pure luck. i wasn't expecting to catch anything, but all of a sudden i felt something hit my face. i wasn't paying attention, so i thought somebody was throwing stuff at me. i thought they were being so rude. so i went to look at it, a crumpled piece of paper. when i unfolded it, it was the 2 dollar bill. that really caught me off guard. i guess you can say that the rest of the concert was magic. pure magic.

I just got back from Gigantour (Megadeth, Dream Theater, Fear Factory, and several other bands)

I went to see Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fear Factory, and Megadeth (in order of preference).

Overall, the acoustics at the venue were godawful. Treble was WAAAAAY too high, and most of the opening bands had WAAAAAAAAY too much distortion on their guitars. Symphony X usually has a super clean sound. Here, they sounded more like any other band that lives off of power chords.

Fear Factory had the best overall sound in terms of the equalizing and overall sound, but I was very disappointed by their performance. The drummer was great, but the instrumentals just sounded blah in person. The singer was doing more screaming than singing.

Dream Theater was impressive, but John Petrucci didn't get enough solos... then again, their drummer was AMAZING. Poor acoustics once again... too much treble, waaaaaaay too much volume

Megadeth had by far the worst overall sound setup IMO. Again, too much volume and treble, but the vocals were completely inaudible. I only actualy heard Dave Mustaine singing for maybe 5 minutes and that's because nobody was playing their instrument. Even when I heard him, there was no clarity in his voice, it was just garbled and weak sounding. Totally unacceptable for the band/singer responsible for this entire tour.

To give you an idea how loud most of these guys ended up, I had to make some earplugs out of napkins out of desparation in order to keep my ear drums from exploding. They blocked off a lot of the treble... and there was STILL too much emphasis on the highs.

Of course, those were the bands. The people were one strange ass crowd. Even stranger because the Amphitheater was only half full. Scene kids galore - you know. The ones who dress and act funny compared to the real fans. Then they proceed to do their strange form of dancing and solo moshing... even though they had seats in the middle of the arena. Add in the old fat women with the waaaay too tight clothing and the fact that there was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much non-cigarette related 2nd hand smoke in the air... I guess it was the only way people managed to make it sound good?

Overall, the Dream theater bit was nice, but the rest of the concert really disappointed me. This is scary because they filmed the DVD for the tour at Montreal last night. Hopefully it turns out ok.

emad: You've convinced me to change the title of the thread! I hope you have better luck in the next concert you go to.

I have less than a week until my Oasis/Jet/Kasabian concert. It should be great! I just need to make sure I don't forget our tickets, since the venue is over three hours away from my apartment. :D I forget tickets in my car or home, all the time. :guilty:

Wow. J-Pop alert! :D j/k Did you see these groups in Japan?

Dream Theater made it worth all the pain I went through though. They played all my favourite songs and despite the awful acoustics, they managed to come out sounding good. I'll DEFINATELY be seeing them when they come by next spring - hopefully with a new sound technician 👍

Whereabouts are you? If Dream Theater is anywhere near me, I'd love to see them live.

I'm in Toronto. Their Gigantour had several Canada stops over the past week. 👍

Friday, I went to north of Seattle to a town called Everett, for Oasis concert. When I tried to go up to the cheapseats, I was saddened and pleasantly surprised at the same time. It turns out they couldn't sell enough tickets, so our nosebleeds tickets were exchanged for the lower level! :D I was sad for Oasis and Jet, but was happy for me. :P

The show opened with Kasabian, who I didn't really care for before the show. I had bought their CD, but didn't really like it that much and on top of that, the CD was copy protected, so I couldn't load it onto iTunes or burn my mix CD. :grumpy: However, after their performance, I'm going to give it a go, again. Great sounding band, very professional and had good personality as well. Though the show was half empty, they showed a lot of enthusiasm and appreciation for the fans. 👍

Second act was Jet, who I really liked. It's too bad that they kind of sucked. Only good thing out of Jet was the great vocal. It was much better live than on the CD. Like I said, crowd was small and Jet played accordingly. They started out, out of sync and it was routine after that. After their effort, I probaby won't be rushing to the store for their upcoming second album.

Finally, Oasis! By the time Oasis came on, the seats they did have available filled up. They were TOP-NOTCH. 👍 My only complaint was that from their latest album, "Don't Belive The Truth", they played almost every songs except 2 out of my 3 favorite songs. :( To make up for that, they did play lots of classic Oasis songs like "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Live Forever", "Champagne Supernova", etc. Their legendary b-side(they had lot of those), "Acquiesce" was just beautiful. I didn't see that coming. If they were bothered by the small crowd, they didn't show it. I gotta tell you, Oasis fans at that show went home very happy. :)

Bump?

I dug this thread up for a very good reason. Next week I'll be flying to Toronto with a couple friends to see Dream Theater in concert for their 20th Anniversary tour. It'll be my first major concert experience, and I couldn't think of another band I'd rather be seeing. We all love Dream Theater, and it's a dream (no pun intended) of ours to see them live. I'll definitely be posting my thoughts when I return. :)

emad - I assume you will be attending as well?

and around I come to see this revived thread.

I'd have to say my best concert experience was seeing Iron Maiden, in 1991. Fear of the Dark tour, back when Bruce Dickinson was in the band (before he left for the 1st time). They had two shows in Caracas, and I went to the first one. The following day at noon a friend of mine who worked at the Hilton called me to tell me the guys from Maiden were due in the bar at 3pm or so, wo of course, I dropped by. Well, this guy introduced me to the press agent and told him I represented a magazine, so the agent gave me two free tickets for that night's concert. So I got to go to the second concert as well.

Also up there should be Sepultura. Although I've been to two Sepultura concerts (Arise and Chaos AD tours), I'd have to say the first one was better. The first one was in 1991 as well and it was one of these "Band fests", it included Sacred Reich and Napalm Death, both of which were awesome as well.

The last greatest is a 3-way-tie between Pantera (Vulgar tour), Apollo440 (in Toronto, at Lee's Palace) and Hiromi (piano virtuoso).

I've been to other great concerts as well, but from little known artists who don't have the greatness of these last ones.

For me it has to the Chemical Brothers, at their last gig in Manchester. It was jaw dropping. It sounded INCREDIBLE, and the audio visual show was a delight.

I've also seen Bob Dylan, he was crap, Slayer, good, Entombed, also good, and a few others. Off to the o2 wireless thing soon to see DJ Shadow and Massive Attack, so fingers crossed it's ace!

what constitutes as a concert? ive been to more shows than i can count but only 5 at the most coast over 10 bucks. of those, i've seen:

Killswitch Engage with Lamb of God and God Forbid. Terrible lineup.

Barricade, Claymore, Shattered Realm. Waste of money. Barricade was the only worhtwhile band.

The Answer, Champion, Sick of It All. Great show, well worth the money.

Sinking Ships, Comeback Kid, Bane. Just after Comeback Kid released Wake the Dead. I like the record, but the crowd they draw bugs the crap out of me. Bane was great. So many people, the mosh circle pit action was certianly in effect.

Either Foo Fighters or Kiss, both live at the Sydney Superdome.

Kiss put on a great show, as expected, and Dave Grohl didn't miss a beat, and really entertained the crowd. Both outstanding shows.

Today, I had what is perhaps the defining experience of my life. I saw David Gilmour performing with Richard Wright on keyboards

The first half of the show, he performed his entire new album - opening with the song On an Island. The lighting and mood was set similarly to the opening scene of the Pulse dvd where he played Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

The second half, he played Pink Floyd material. Timeless classics like Time, High Hopes, Breathe, Wearing The Inside Out, and High Hopes. He also played the obligatory Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Comfortably Numb.

For his second last song, he blew everyone away. One note by Richard Wright and everyone went berzerk. That song was Echoes - all of it. Combine that song with the most incredible light show I have ever seen and well, I felt as though I was tripping balls even though I was quite sober all night.

Musically, this was no doubt the best concert I've ever been to. But the lighting... holy crap, the light show! That was an event in and of itself! The strobe lights, the lasers, the rediculous amounts of smoke - simply amazing

Overall, even though I went alone, this one was worth every last penny. If anything, it felt as though the 2.5 hours he performed just wasn't enough

That sure makes me want to go see a concert. I wonder if there's anybody good coming to my town......

Looks like I'm going to just one concert this summer....... August 26th, I'm going to the Oregon State Fair for the first time(or any State Fair) to see Cake, Violent Femmes and the Decemberists(local band!). I don't know much about Violent Femmes, but they are supposedly really good, old-school band.

You guys got any plans to see a good show this summer?

Hopefully, I'll be able to catch a couple of the concerts again at PAX this year. Last year I was only able to see the part of the concert that featured mc chris, but otherwise I enjoyed the nerdcore rap songs and I had loads of fun, that being my first "concert".

Las night I had the chance to go see a jazz band called Reunion 06. Basically a well-equipped quartet with many invited guests, local and international. The quartet is Chuck Loeb, Anthony Jackson Till Bröner and Josh Dion. Really good stuff.

The jazz festival is in town, so that's going to be the main attraction for the next week. Eddie Palmieri, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, David Sanborn and Joe Sample are just a few of them. I'll be going to about 4 concerts.

Best I went to was the "Hidden Fish Golden Finger" tour, with Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish. They put on an awesome show, especially Goldfinger, they let us up on stage! :sly:
Afterwards we got the chance to talk and get autographs from the band members.
I'll be seeing The Living End in September, so I'll see if they can put on a better show.

I'd love to see an Aquabats concert, it'd be grat fun, and top Goldfinger/Reel Big Fish off, easly. Apparently they get attacked by evil villans in the concerts.

yeah, they do. I've never been but a freind of mine has been to several. The only show ive ever been to so far as a local show. But we opened up for the band, so thats why i was there. But I am going to see Ted Nugent on August 5th in Ft. Worth. Should be great. (I'll probably be the only teenager there, but The Nuge is sooo cool, it wont bother me.)

Pink Floyd, The Division Bell, at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. They made 3 nights at full capacity, and I'm quite sure that's the only band that ever achieved this.

We were in the 2nd row, right in front of the Humongous speaker column at the right of the scene, it almost made me deaf for a week. We could touch a giant pig from "One of these days" once it falled. We moved to the center of the 30ish row for the last two songs, which was perfect. The lasers, projectors effects and other tricks were out of this world. Plus I was almost "molested" by a really cute girl. :sly: ( I was 15 at the time).

This show was nothing short of amazing, musically and visually, and the 60K+ crowd was totally fired up. The only downside is that most of us were not familiar yet with songs from their new album, but the classics totally made up for it.
