Note: Please don't post full YouTube videos here. If you want to share the song with others, then please link to them as I have with mine. Thanks! :)

First of all, sorry if this has been posted before - I did a search and nothing came up, but still. :)

So, then, what are your favorite song lyrics? I have quite a few, and I realized that there's no actual place to post them on GTP (well, besides a status, but 140 characters is frequently way too short). If you can, don't forget to post the song's title and the artist so people can look the song up. :)

I have quite a few "favorite" lyrics myself, so let me kick things off with some of my own:

Metallica - "Fuel"

Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire, OOH!
Turn on, I see red
Adrenaline crash and crack my head
Nitro junkie, paint me dead
And I see red
One hundred plus through black and white
Warhorse, warhead, **** 'em man, white knuckle tight
Through black and white....

(stops before he posts the whole song lol)

Xandria - "Soulcrusher"

Abusing for lust, instinct thirst for blood
Hunting day by day - tears will run dry to hate
For the weakest one is hacked 'til it's done
'Til it's falling out of the nest, dead and gone
This sublime system of pure selection
Guarded carefully by the lies unquestioned
It is living on, it is killing on
While the protectors just watch

Tarot - "Ashes to the Stars"

Jump into madness awaiting at the seams
Of all reality and mind
Through a wound torn in space and time
I blink, centuries unwind

Hear the voice of the suns
Their wind at your face
The rage of their storm...

Spread my ashes to the stars
Join the raw chaos at heart
Spread my ashes to the stars
Fall forever in the dark...

I could keep going but I think it's wise to stop there.

Led Zeppelin - Thank You

"If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. When mountains crumble to the sea, there would still be you and me"

Aerosmith - Mama Kin

"It ain't easy living like you wanna, it's so hard to find piece of mind"

The Offspring - Dirty Magic

"She's just not that way, her little soul is stolen, see her put on a brand new face"

The Offspring - Can't Repeat

"Yesterday laughs, tomorrow cries"

Plus many many many more.

This sounds like fun! No better place for me to start than with...

Sonic Youth / The Diamond Sea

Time takes its crazy toll
And how does your mirror grow
You better watch yourself when you jump into it
Cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul

...

Throw all his trash away
Look out he's here to stay
Your mirror's gonna crack when he breaks into it
And you'll never never be the same

bob dylan subterranean homesick blues.

The pumps don't work cause the vandals took the handles. Actually the whole song, that is just the last line.

Great idea.

Blue Öyster Cult - Veteran Of The Psychic Wars

"You're seeing now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars.
I've been living on the edge so long, where the winds of limbo roar.
And I'm young enough to look at,
And far too old to see, all the stars are on the inside.
I'm not sure that's there's anything left to me."

And this is one of my all-time favorite quotes, not just song lyrics; it doesn't hurt that I'm a big fan of both Richard Thompson and Jack Kerouac.

Richard Thompson - Sibella

"Oh some girls hold the ace, the deuce, the trey.
X-ray the deck to see what's coming.
Mary Antoinette she smiled that way.
Easy to smile when the luck is running.

Like a myth you rode in from the west.
From the go you had my button pressed.
Did the tea time of your soul make you long for wilder days?
Did you never let Jack Kerouac wash over you in waves?"

Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum

"Second robber to the right of Christ
Cut in half - infanticide
The world will rejoice today as the crows feast on the rotting poet

Everyone must bury their own
No pack to bury the heart of stone
Now he's home in Hell, serves him well
Slain by the bell tolling for his farewell"

Metallica - One

"Darkness
Imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body, my holding cell

Land mine
Has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell"

I don't give a cotton-pickin' ****
About a brother tryna size a ***** up, I hold my own

It's not the line itself that is my favorite, really, it's the way Method Man enunciates it, especially the last word of the first line which makes it an instant favorite, at least for me.

Though for something a bit different:

The last two lines really sell it:
But grace can still be found within the gale
With fear and rev'rence, raise your ragged sail

It is also cool that the last two lines of every final song on The various Alchemy Indexes (Fire, Water, Earth and Air) are all interconnected, being sonnets, all of the lyrics being written in iambic parameter, and share the same melody, albeit in different keys.

blink-182 - Not Now

Come here, please hold my hand Lord now
Help me, I'm scared please show me how
To fight this, God has a master plan
And I guess, I am in his demand

Please save me, this time I cannot run
And I'll see, you when this is done
And now I, have come to realize
That you are, the one who's left behind

Please stay, until I'm gone
I'm here, hold on, to me
I'm right here, waiting

I see, the light it feels good
And I'll come, back soon just like you would
It's useless, my name has made the list
And I wish, I gave you one last kiss

Please stay, until I'm gone
I'm here, hold on, to me
I'm right here, waiting
And take, my one last breath
And don't forget
That I will be right here, waiting

Excellent thread idea! I recently posted some lyrics in the favorite quotes thread not know of this one's existence... I will frequent this thread, often!

For starters, Billy Joel.

Piano Man - BILLY JOEL

"...sharing a drink they call 'Loneliness'
But it's better than drinking alone..."

My favorite Joel lyrics, I'll just post the whole song.

Come out Virginia, don't let 'em wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Aw but sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one

Well, they showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
Aw, but they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done
Only the good die young
That's what I said
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
Aw but that never hurt no one

So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal and I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never let's in the sun
Darlin' only the good die young
Woah
I tell ya
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
Mmm, and a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
(Oh woah woah)

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun

You know that only the good die young
I tell ya
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

Well your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
Aw she never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah

Come out come out come out Virginia don't let 'em wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Oh sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one
You know that only the good die young

I'm telling you baby
You know that only the good die young
Only the good die young
Only the good
Only the good die young

BTW, you suck with all this getting to go to concerts that I can't :P

My favorite Joel lyrics...
I cannot pick favorites. Nor can I single out a whole song. :P I'll share my favorite lyrics within that song.
Well, they showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away

We might be laughing a bit too loud
Aw but that never hurt no one

I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun

Aw she never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah
Those specifically make the song stand out to me.
BTW, you suck with all this getting to go to concerts that I can't :P
Red Hot Chili Peppers was my first concert. :P But I had pay 65 dollars for it...

Billy Joel as a second concert.. I'm starting off pretty strong. And this one is free. ;)

He's not bad with the words, I have many I like. When I was a kid growing up I think glass houses was my fav record and I'm so old I bought it the day it was released :embarrassed:

I'm a big fan of Tobias Sammet's lyrics, he can have some very silly lyrics, but he can then write words of beauty, as such:

The Great Mystery

"I see a cold moon rise above those empty streets
And I've seen movements part their lives
I hear the ticking leaving scars you can't conceal
Ain't it poignant how you try
Impatiently, they're giving up on hearts
Whose signs they cannot read
As silence doesn't talk, eternity will cease

And as you marvel at the artwork in your hands
Rich in detail, so frail and beautiful
And you forget the rules the elders always made for you
To save you precious time
You watch them pile up, they're saving on and on
Even you don't know where they store it all
You've got to be a fool if you don't save along
A thousand screaming, and silence doesn't speak
To thousands screaming, no silence doesn't want to speak"

What I hear less a topic, but more thoughts being spread out onto the page, philosophy on how to live life.

I also like Michael Kiske's lyrics, but in a different way, this example showing more simple lyrics. But if I ever wanted anyone to know anything about the meaning behinds songs, this song explains it beautifully.

A Song is Just a Moment

"A song is just a moment that might never come back
A song is just a feeling that sometimes I regret
And in that magic moment, a melody is born
Some other moments later, it may bother like a thorn

Because I've got to live my life like everyone must do
I don't regret a single feeling I've had to walk through
Life is a thing to get to know ourselves
And you're, you're a king when clear hear those bells
It's clear, so clear. I see

I right down my emotions, to see what's up inside
I walk across this bridge called life and found a place to hide
Whoever you may talk to, the sky will still be blue
Whatever you may talk about me, it shows what's inside you"

Yeah, it's a bit cheesy, but there's also some really good there.

More Billy Joel lyrics incoming!

This is from the song "Captain Jack." As I am kind of a big fan of Joel and his music, I don't really have a favorite song. I do often favor one over the other and lately this has been the one. A few of my favorite Joel songs that rotate as my number one are: Vienna, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, Miami 2017, New York State of Mind, All For Leyna, Tell Her About It, She's Always a Woman, Tomorrow is Today, Scandinavian Skies, Summer, and Highland Falls. Anyways, to the lyrics! :P

Billy Joel
Captain Jack will get you high tonight
And take you to your special island
Captain Jack will get you by tonight
Just a little push and you'll be smilin'
That is the chorus of the song which is repeated several times between the verses. What I love is how straight to the point it is. The song is about heroin and a loser who abuses it and does absolutely nothing with his life. This chorus basically states that Captain Jack (drug dealer) has the needed heroin and this scumbag loser can always rely on him. "Just a push and you'll be smilin'" is clearly taking about doing the drug itself. It is seriously amazing how Joel can come up with lyrics that tell something exactly how it is without them conflicting with the music itself.
Billy Joel
So you stand on the corner in your New English clothes
And you look so polished from your hair down to your toes
Ahh, but still your finger's gonna pick your nose
I really like how he decided to use "hair" rather than "head." It breaks the cliché, but it sounds great too.
Billy Joel
So you go to the village in your tie-dye jeans
And you stare at the junkies and the closet queens
It's like some pornographic magazine
And you smile
Theatre of the mind is a talent Joel definitely has.

Really enjoying Fiona Apple's "Slow Like Honey" today. The meaning of the lyrics is at least 3 levels deep.

Care to share an example?

Here's part of it:

"So I stretch myself across
Like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge
And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story
Shall I release you?
Must I release you?
As I rise to meet my glory"

She's talking holding off a climax in at least 3 ways. One is physically, one is emotionally, and one is musically... which is reflected in the song where she keeps avoiding the refrain.

Porter Robinson/Madeon - Shelter

I could never find the right way to tell you
Have you noticed I've been gone?
'Cause I left behind the home you made for me
But I will carry it along.
Mm, it's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter like you've done for me
And I know I'm not alone
You'll be watching over us, until you're gone.

Porter Robinson does a good job with his lyrics, especially on the more vocal-heavy songs.

Porter Robinson - Sad Machine
"Is anyone there?
Oh -- Hi!"

(Above is normal dialogue)

Who survived?
Somebody new?
Anyone else but you?
On a lonely night
Was a blinding light.
A hundred leaders would be borne of you.

And though I know
Since you've awakened her again
She depends on you. She depends on you.
She'll go alone
And never speak of this again
We depend on you. We depend on you.

And though I know
Since you've awakened her again
She depends on you. She depends on you.
She'll go alone
And never speak of this again.
We depend on you. We depend---
---I'll depend...on you.

XTC - Wrapped In Grey

Some folks see the world as a stone
Concrete daubed in dull monotone
Your heart is the big box of paints
And others, the canvas we're dealt
Your heart is the big box of paints
How colored the flowers all smelled
As they huddled there, in petaled prayer
They told me this, as I knelt there

Awaken you dreamers
Adrift in your beds
Balloons and streamers
Decorate the inside of your heads
Please let some out
Do it today
But don't let the loveless ones sell you
A world wrapped in grey

Some folks pull this life like a weight
Drab and dragging dreams made of slate
Your heart is the big box of paints
And others, the canvas we're dealt
Your heart is the big box of paints
Just think how the old masters felt, they call

Awaken you dreamers
Asleep at your desks
Parrots and lemurs
Populate your unconscious grotesques
Please let some out
Do it today
But don't let the loveless ones sell you
A world wrapped in grey

And in the very least you can
Stand up naked and
Grin

Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar-pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black

and

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of your highness I'm left back
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Especially the bottom line.

Sabaton - "Ghost Division"

Fast as the wind, the invasion has begun
Shaking the ground with the force of a thousand guns
First in the line of fire, first into hostile land
Tanks leading the way
Claiming the fame

They are the Panzer elite
Born to compete
Never retreat
Living or dead
Always ahead
Fed by your dread

Sabaton - "To Hell and Back"

Oh gather 'round me
And listen while I speak
Of a war where Hell is six feet deep
And all along the shore, where cannons still roar
They're haunting my dreams, they're still there when I sleep

What battles are these about?

What battles are these about?
"Ghost Division" is about the German 7th Panzer Division (aka "Ghost Division") from World War II, who were a key part of German blitzkriegs, and were frequently the first troops to make contact ("first into hostile land, tanks leading the way, claiming the fame"). "To Hell and Back" is about Audie Murphy and his struggle with PTSD. The section I included alludes to a flashback to the Battle of Anzio, depicting how it continued to haunt him for the rest of his life.

The Eden Project - Circles

If I told you how this story end,
Would you change a step you take?
And if I could relive all of my days,
I'd live them all the same.

'cause I'm scared, of all that I don't know,
'cause I want it all but all of it ain't gold.
And I'm scared, but I know it's not for long
'cause I'm learning what I should've long before.

That all we are,
Is a light into the darkness;
And all we are,
Is time that's counting down.
And all we are,
Is falling through the spaces in between;
Endless flight,
A lifetime in repeat.

So hold on to me,
We'll burn out slowly.
And feel our hearts leap
To words we don't mean:

Love.
Means nothing to me,
'cause I don't know what it is.

EDEN - End Credits

And all we ever wanted
Was sunlight and honesty
Highlights to wanna repeat
Let's get away from here and
Live like the movies do
I won't mind when its over
At least I didn't think for a while

So let's run
Make a great escape
And I'll be waiting outside for the getaway
It doesn't matter who we are
We'll keep running through the dark
And all we'll ever need is another day
We can slow down cause tomorrow is a mile away
And live like shooting stars
'Cause happy endings hardest to fake

EDEN - Gravity

I wanted you to be the last thing on my mind
I wanted you to be the reason I close my eyes
But I can't sleep
And oh god I wanted to be your high
But everything I said it went unheard
And everything you saw with eyes straight blurred
Became our downfall

So I been thinking that I think too much
And I can't sleep but I can dream of us

Cos you said jump and I went first but fallings always been my downfall

EDEN - Wake Up

But you'll feel better when you wake up
Swear to god I'll make up
Everything and more when I get back someday
This is more than just a phase, love
Shooting stars all break up
And even though it seems like half the world away

Things will be better in America
Heard the streets are gold there
Maybe I could fly you out this place someday
Chasing dreams like I'm on Novocain
Screaming through your airways
Looking back I almost thought I heard you say

Stay, you're not gonna leave me
This place is right where you need to be
And why your words gotta mean so much to them
And they mean nothing to me
So stay, you're not what you're hearing
'Cause I've been watching you changing
And who said you're one in a million
Anyway?

No "B" plan in your system
Just tell me what you're thinking
I'm scared that you might fall

And you'll feel better when you wake up
Taking off your makeup
Sun always seems to wash our fears away
And it's always shining somewhere
I just gotta get there
And even though it seems like half the world away

And who said you're one in a million?

You're so much better than that
^ right in the feels.

EDEN - Catch Me If You Can

Of course I'm scared
Would I be thinking straight if I wasn't

Of course I'm scared
Would I be thinking straight if I wasn't

But I always liked the thought of maybe being a runaway
I could be your lover and you could be my heart ache
I could sing the songs that we used to sing when we were kids
Maybe that could bring us back to before we got stuck in this

Even if its not the plan
Cos plans are over rated
Cos you never really know where you're going
And the past is always changing
Ain't been gold since I remembered it that way

And I could sing the songs that we used to sing way back when
The future wasn't everything and we lived because we loved it then
Oh I'm going back
Catch me if you can

Here's some for you guys. I have really gotten into early and mid 2000's emo music lately. Back in April of this year my friend created a playlist of music for me to listen to, most of which I have never heard before, and boy has it changed my life. I have always liked this kind of music but did not really know how to to find it. This stuff is great.

Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional

This is a pretty sad song. The section I put bold on is especially crushing.

As for now I'm gonna hear the saddest songs
And sit alone and wonder
How you're making out
But as for me, I wish that I was anywhere with anyone
Making out.

I'm missing your laugh
How did it break?
And when did your eyes begin to look fake?
I hope you're as happy as you're pretending.

I'm cuddling close to blankets and sheets
I am alone
In my defeat I wish I knew you were safely at home

Best Of Me by The Starting Line

we turn our music down
and we whisper
say what your thinking right now
tell me what you thought about
when you were gone and so alone
the worst is over
you can have the best of me
we got older but we're still young
we never grew out of this feeling that we wont give up

My Beautiful Rescue by This Providence

(I found this song on my own ;))

I've been dancing on the tops of buildings.
At the top of my lungs I'm singing you a song.
Don't you leave me alone.
My bones were shattered.
My pride lays shattered.
Well I'll trample my pride and tell the whole world.
To dance with me.

I'm falling more in love.
With every single word I withhold.
I'm falling more in love.
With every single word you say.
I'm falling head over heels for you again.

Had drinks with friends last night and somehow the topic of conversation turned to Michael Hutchence's daughter inheriting his estate last week on her 21st birthday. Not surprisingly, the topic then turned to death by autoerotic asphyxiation, and that always brings to my mind singer/songwriter Kevin Gilbert of Giraffe and Toy Matinee (both acts figuring prominently in my early '90s listening habits). I've been listening to my collection of his works where I rediscovered this gem from his last release prior to his death.

When You Give Your Love To Me

I've been thinking about this for the last 3 days
I don't think that I'm deluding myself
I don't think that this is just a phase
And I don't mean to shock you - I hope that I'm not rushing in
But I think that this is kinda important
and I don't know exactly where to begin

My whole life has been a constant ailment
You can provide a simple remedy
Yeah, I'm gonna show some vast improvement
When you give your love to me
And you can trust that I'm a worthy recipient
And be assured I'll act responsibly
I'll treat it like a work of rare and priceless art
When you give your love to me

So how's about it girlfriend? Am I gonna have to twist your arm?
Perhaps it's not the most original concept
but it has a kind of timeless charm

You'll have the little birds flying all around your head
and you'll gaze at me dreamily
Yeah, the whole world's gonna smile and wave
when you give your love to me
And I will write you a hundred sonnets - Every word will rhyme easily
And all your friends will be genuinely supportive
When you give your love to me

I'm sick of hearing about sadness
I'm sick of violent crime
I'm sick of angry militant lesbian feminists
I'm sick of imperfect rhyme

I've always heard that we should love one another
And what a fine example we will be!
Maybe we can start a trend or something
When you give your love to me
And maybe then we'll get our friends together
And they'll all get along famously
I think that everyone will feel much better
When you give your love to me
There'll be global peace and religious tolerance
All men as brothers in a world that's free
There'll be a perfect cosmic harmonic convergence
When you give your love to me.

So I'm re-reading Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451--something I must have done a couple dozen times at this point--and couple that with talk of the big, old Merc that once shuttled Adolf Hitler, I've got book-burning on my mind. As a result, a song has been looping through my head lately:

XTC - Books Are Burning

Books are burning in the main square
And I saw there, the fire eating the text
Books are burning in the still air
And you know where they burn books, people are next

I believe the printed word should be forgiven
Doesn't matter what it said
Wisdom hotline from the dead back to the living
Key to the larder for your heart and your head, unh

Books are burning in our own town
Watch us turn 'round and cast our glances elsewhere
Books are burning in the playground
Smell of burnt book is not unlike human hair

Well, I believe the printed word is more than sacred
Beyond the gauge of good or bad
The human right to let your soul fly free and naked
Above the violence of the fearful and sad, mmm mmm yeh

The church of matches
Anoints in ignorance with gasoline
The church of matches
Grows fat by breathing in the smoke of dreams, it's quite obscene

Books are burning, more each day now
And I pray now, you boys will tire of these games
Books are burning, I hope somehow
This will allow, a phoenix up from the flames

I maintain that Andy Partridge is one of the all-time great songwriters, and not simply because I love XTC.
