Really enjoying Fiona Apple's "Slow Like Honey" today. The meaning of the lyrics is at least 3 levels deep.
Here's part of it:
"So I stretch myself across
Like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge
And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story
Shall I release you?
Must I release you?
As I rise to meet my glory"
She's talking holding off a climax in at least 3 ways. One is physically, one is emotionally, and one is musically... which is reflected in the song where she keeps avoiding the refrain.
I know I've already posted about this song once before in here but I just listened to it again and... goodness I think it might be one of the best written songs ever. This song is pure sex. If you listen to it interpreting everything as sexual inuendo, it holds water completely (lined up orgasm sounds and everything). And it is sooooo good in that interpretation. She goes through the entire encounter with such brilliant imagery, and even intellectualizes a little bitter sweet element of how real sex can still be like living fantasy, and crossing that bridge is tenuous and temporary.
And then if you listen to the song thinking of it as a discussion of an emotional connection, she describes a relationship, almost an abusive relationship, where her partner wants to get away and can't quite shake his attachment to her. She describes being difficult to understand, and her complexity being an endearing quality that almost painfully keeps bringing her partner back to her. And that level of interpretation of the song holds water completely as well, and is more bitter sweet.
And then again if you listen to the song thinking of it as literally Fiona Apple talking to her fans about her music... it's again a complete story. Kinda like "hook" by Blues Traveler. Her fans are mystified by her, can't quite discern her, and yet they can't run away because she keeps them coming back with her slow melodies and deep moody lyrics... and her music bridges the gap between fantasy and reality and relieves her and her fans... for a moment.
I'm so friggin impressed with this song. It's a really great tune, and it's so Fiona Apple, and it's so damned brilliant and immersive in layers. Hang on, I gotta go take a cold shower.
