Last week we reported the install size for Forza Motosport 7 will be a monstrous 100GB, the largest yet. It’s a cause for concern for the average user, meaning Forza 7 will consume 20% of the standard hard drive.
To ease that terror, Microsoft has confirmed only Xbox One X users will have access to 4K game updates.
When asked by Stevivor how the extended Xbox One family would handle the 4K-assisted game downloads, a Microsoft representative responded, “With the launch of Xbox One X, when it comes to game content our intention is to download the correct assets to the correct console.”
As a result, 4K assets will only download on Xbox One X, and not the original One or S models. Microsoft stresses the One X will obtain these assets regardless of the TV used. Standard consoles on the other hand will only download 1080p.
This is good news for “standard” Xbox One owners as it outlines a more manageable install size. It’s worth acknowledging while the One S is capable of 4K, it does so by upscaling the original 1080p image.
Furthermore, Microsoft states it will give “developers tools to make downloads more efficient” for the Xbox One X and One S. Continuing, the Redmond-based software developer suggests it has put together a feature that gives developers “significant flexibility when it comes to what gets installed on a user’s console.”
In addition to 4K updates, developers will have the ability to select the best assets according to the console. Language packs are a particular concern as multiple, unused languages take up space.
This feature suggests developers will have the option of only including the language relevant to the individual console. This hints at the possibility that while install sizes will grow, 100GB could be a worst-case scenario.
The Xbox One X releases November 7, with a suggested retail price of $499.
