WRS'ers and their ride...

Well I've finally updated the initial thread with all the cars people have added 👍

Thanks for updating post#1 MisterWeary, but peculiarly enough, all the links for everyone's posts point back to your car! We can't all be driving your car, can we?!!! :P

Hmmm....my bad....I thought when I cpoied and pasted a previous entry all I had to do to get the link to work was change the post number at the end of the link, looks like I was wrong. Being the anally retentive man I am, I have gone through and fixed them all up, thanks for the heads up Smallhorses 👍

I noticed a few things while I was going through the thread though:

1. Electric..... has been banned?!? I hope it wasn't for owning a yugo :sly:

2. Kent's post is number 83 in this thread and it's number 83 in the post where he did the write up for his car...as a poker player I like those little odd coincedences.

3. Kyle, does KLR142 stand for "Killer 142", I can't believe it's taken me this long to realise it?!?

MisterWeary
Electric..... has been banned?!? I hope it wasn't for owning a yugo :sly:
He's been banned on his own request for a fortnight... which ends tomorrow.

Edit :
Great car Jason 👍 👍
I remember having had a 1/43th 240Z model when I was 6 or 7 and I've always liked that car since that time.

Jason? How come your gtplanet name is jake? Lol, that's like Randy with his real name being Rob... Anywho, that is an AWESOME job on that 240 man!

MisterWeary
3. Kyle, does KLR142 stand for "Killer 142", I can't believe it's taken me this long to realise it?!?
👍 Well, initially, it was KLE for my initials, but then it looked cooler as KLR, and so yeah, that's what it's become. Killer142, even if I don't quite yet have a killer 142... :)

Now this is a unique and different thread!

If the main list up on the 1st page is still being updated, I've got a stock 2000 VW Jetta VR6 for the time being...Eyeing either a late 90's M3 or early 2000 Vette C5 sometime (hopefully) by the end of the year.

MisterWeary
Well Falango's post here got me thinking...since we're all simulated car fanatics, there's a good chance we're real life car fanatics too so I thought I'd make this thread and ask the question:

~What's your real life ride?~

Well, I have two cars... My daily-driver is a 1980 Mercedes Benz 240D, which I bought from a friend of mine who's parents bought it brand-new back in 1980, so I'm technically the second owner. I drive it mostly for the good fuel-economy (depending on the season, up to 30 miles-per-gallon around town... And it'll burn anything from regular Diesel Fuel to BioDiesel to Vegetable Oil, to Kerosene -- even used Motor Oil and Tranny Fluid, as long as they've been filtered first... And I don't have a true Veg-Oil "conversion" so the weather has to be quite warm for the Veg Oil to work properly... I usually mix the "alternative" fuels with at least 50% regular Diesel for the best results...) It's safe, reliable, comfortable, and, yes -- SLOW! (Zero to Sixty MPH in 25 seconds!) <GRIN> But it's got "only" 211,000 miles on it, which means I should get, hopefully, MANY more years out of it... These things can regularly beat the 500,000-mile mark...

My other car is my "fun" car. A 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible. Rebuilt big-block Ford 390-cubic-inch engine, bored .030 over. 391 BHP at 4500 RPM, and a whopping 486 ft-lbs of torque at 2500 RPM. (No joke!!! She'll MELT the tires if I'm not careful! Total torque-monster!) Edelbrock Performer 390 intake. Comp-Cam's 275DEH camshaft (.515" lift intake, .541" lift exhaust, 275-deg. duration intake, 285-deg. duration exhaust.) Flat-topped pistions, giving 10.5:1 compression. Ported/polished heads. Stainless-steel valves with hardened seats. Shorty headers with full-dual Flowmaster exhaust. (Couldn't use long headers, because the convertible's extra frame-parts get in the way.) 3.70:1 limited-slip rear-end, with a GearVendors overdrive unit mounted to the back of the rebuilt C6, so she'll still get decent mileage on the highway... (above 20MPG, believe it or not!) Modern electronic ignition. And, (where I get the good fuel-mileage from) a home-built throttle-body electronic-fuel-injection system that replaces the old-fashioned carburetor... (Visit http://www.megasquirt.info/ for more info on the EFI system. It's a VERY cool setup, and not as horribly difficult or expensive as you might think! An automatic 15-20% increase in fuel economy vs. a carburetor. And I can tune my 38-year-old car WITH A LAPTOP!! <GRIN>)

I'm still getting everything together on the Galaxie -- took her completely apart to do the restoration, and that was about a year ago... She's roadworthy right now, but not complete -- lots of trim and interior pieces left to finish up... And some more tweaking to do on the engine and EFI and whatnot... But probably around August, 2006, she'll be perfect and I can start really showing her off... And take her to a few drag races, too. ;) She should do the quarter-mile in under 14 seconds -- which ain't bad for a 4,200-pound land-yacht. She even has factory power-disc brakes, so she can stop on a dime! (1968 was the first model-year that Bendix had their single-piston floating-caliper design on the market, so they're fully modern dual-chambered power-front-disc/rear-drum brakes just like you see on your average car of today...) And it's got factory A/C so I can keep cool during the summer. :) Whoever ordered this car, really put on just the right options! I love it!

Well, that's about it -- hope I haven't bored you with this long post. I just love my cars!

Jason? How come your gtplanet name is jake? Lol, that's like Randy with his real name being Rob... Anywho, that is an AWESOME job on that 240 man!

When I was a kid, this guy I worked for started calling me Jake for some reason. Before I knew it my family adopted the nickname and it stuck. So my family and friends call me Jake...

Glad you like the Z. It gets a lot of looks and is real fun to drive. I learned a ton during the resto process. If you ever get a chance to tear a car apart and restore it, I would totally recommend it... 👍

@KLR142: Well I too hope to do some serious work to a car one day, just need to buy a house with a spare garage bay, not sure I'll choose a Volvo though :sly:

@SimRaceDriver: Sure am still updating it, adding your car as I write this...

@Laurence5905: No chance of boring us with car details, just a shame you don't have a pic, your car sounds awesome 👍

@jake73: The main thing I noticed about your car is those oh so sexy wheels :sly: Seriously though....that model Datsun is very nice 👍

MisterWeary
@Laurence5905: No chance of boring us with car details, just a shame you don't have a pic, your car sounds awesome 👍

I do have pics, but they're all "in progress" photos... No trim, and the like... Nothing that's complete yet...

I suppose I could post this one pic Right(xsm).jpg -- it was the day I brought her home from the body-shop after having her re-painted... (You can see my Benz in the background, too, so it kills two birds with one stone...) Ignore the wheels that're shown in this pic, they're a VERY old set of steel American Racing Outlaw II's, painted black in the center, and equipped with cheap knock-off spinners. (Circa 1975 or so). I'm either going back to the stock steel-wheels with styled full-wheel-covers, or buying a set of American Racing Torque-Thrust D's (or maybe some Cragar SS's). It all depends on how much I can get a set of wheels for -- I've spent way too much already, and I don't want to spend $2,000 more for a set of wheels... But that's for after I'm done with the interior and trim and everything else! ;)

👎 Sucks to be you! Lol, just kidding... I'll be doing serious work to more than one car, no worries, but yes, most of them will be volvos, because you wouldn't expect it, but they're cheap and fun... 👍

Laurence5905

Sweet, are you thinking 17"s? Or little dinky ones? And, megasquirt is awesome stuff. I'll use that on one of my 140s that I convert to EFI... :sly: It's quite popular in the Volvo tuning world actually. Did you have your engine on a dyno then?

KLR142

Well, I've got 235/60R15 tires on there now, and they're practically brand new, so I think I'm either going to have to wear these tires out and then buy some 17" rims, or just buy 15" rims and use the existing tires... Probably gonna go with the 15" rims just to save money on tires... (Yeah, I know -- go ahead and flame me... :nervous: )

I didn't realize it was so popular with the Volvo folks... I'm totally thrilled with it, myself... It was a LOT of fun to build and the whole installation wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be...

Did you have your engine on a dyno then?
Yes, I had the whole thing professionally built and then dynoed... They didn't use the MegaSquirt, but they did use a 750CFM Holley carb, which will be pretty close to the 750CFM throttle-body EFI unit that's on there in the car... Those numbers (391 HP @ 4500 RPM, & 486 ft-lbs @ 2500 RPM) are at the flywheel, of course, not at the rear-wheels... Haven't had it on a chassis dyno yet to find out how much power I'm losing in the rest of the drivetrain...

Yeah, a lot of the turbo guys use it and ditch the stock FI so they can toss their bigger turbos and injectors in there and then make it all work perfectly. :sly:

About the tires... Flame flame flame! I say wear those out on the current wheels, that way when they do go, which'll be a good while from now I assume(well, depends on how judicious you get with the throttle, eh?), get bigger wheels. My reasoning for that is, I bet the tires you have on there now are pretty old? Or at least old school styling anyway... When you get some 17"s, you won't just be upgrading the looks like you would if you just swap tires, you'll be upping the grip and handling of the car. Sure it's not going to be an awesome handling car when you do, but every bit helps, and 17" Cragars look a WHOLE heck of a lot better than eeeensy weeensy 15" ones... 👍

And onto the dyno... Do you have a wideband O2 sensor or two on there? It's a REALLY good idea to get on the dyno so you can tune the megasquirt by looking at the A/F ratio and such, and tuning it for certain numbers at cruise and full throttle. Does your MS do ignition too?

I have 2 vehicles (soon).

Daily driver is a 94 Acura Vigor. I made a few mods to it. It has:
no power steering, no horn, no cruise control, and judging by the tread left, racing slicks. Then I tacked on the 250,000 miles. Add in a little bird crap, and the ladies go weak in the knees. At least it has the inline 5 cyl. that no one around here likes to work on.

I'm buying a motorcycle this week. '81 Honda CB750 Custom. I love it already.

That's a trip you have the same wheels. It took forever for me to get them. Had them custom made with 4 lugs and correct offsets so they fit perfect... :)

Just to bore anyone who reads this thread. Here's my little toy:

Told you it was little ;)

That is an awesome Mini Sphinx, I love the older model Minis, those wheels are just so groovy for the car 👍

Speaking of wheels, I loved Simmons the first second I saw them jake and I didn't care that they cost an arm and a leg, they just look so cool.

Now come on, Jerry....! You know Minis are never boring! :D
Shame we don't get the chance to drive them in the game anymore though! :grumpy:

Actually the tires on there have less than 5,000 miles on them... They're good tires (Firestone Firehawk SS15's, size 235/60R15) and their relatively-wide footprint and stiff sidewall, combined with the large anti-roll bars front and rear (factory option, believe it or not) it actually handles quite well for a 4,200-pound land-yacht... (Nothing compared to the really sporty cars on here, of course! But not bad at all, considering what it is...)

So it'll take a while for me to wear them out -- they should be good for 40,000 miles... Which puts me in a major dilemma... I dislike the wheels on there now, and I'd REALLY like some 17" Torque-Thrusts or Cragars on there (I agree, the 17's would look SO much better than the 15's...) but I just cannot STAND to throw away $600 worth of good tires... So I'm still basically undecided -- I keep wavering back and forth from buying 15" wheels that can use the existing tires, to keeping the existing wheels for a while (it'll take several years for me to put 35,000 additional miles on these tires, since I only drive the car on weekends, and ONLY when the weather is nice...) Decisions, decisions... I guess it all depends on how much I can get a set of new wheels for -- if I find a great deal on 17" Cragars, that'll make the decision for me...

I decided to go with the simpler narrow-band O2 setup... A single heated sensor (a Bosch model, off of a '90 Ford Mustang) mounted in the middle of the X-pipe on the dual exhaust... (The MS computer can't handle two O2 sensors at the same time, anyway, so I figured why bother with two of them.) It's good enough to tell me when it's rich or lean, and the MS computer can figure it out from there by making minor changes to the fuel mixture... And when it's out of "closed loop" mode at the high end of the RPM scale, I've got it running just a tiny bit rich... (I tuned it by sitting in the passenger seat with the laptop, making changes to the fuel-mixture matrix while monitoring the voltage-reading from the O2 sensor, while a friend of mine followed my instructions from the driver's seat...)

The ignition is a Pertronix setup... Stock distributor with vacuum-plus-mechanical advance, with a Pertronix Ignitor unit replacing the stock points, and a Pertronix Flame-Thrower coil replacing the stock coil. Using that setup, I was able to remove the factory-equipped resistor wire, which cuts voltage from 12V to 6V to the stock coil (to keep the points from burning themselves out, of course). Now the coil gets the full 12-volts, and produces one hell of a nice spark. I was able to increase the spark-plug gap quite a bit, so I get an excellent fuel burn... And the whole package cost me only $110.00.

The ignition is not controlled by the MS computer -- again, I wanted simplicity in the MS setup... The wideband O2 and spark-control options on the MS just seemed like far more trouble than they were worth, and much harder to get good tech-support for... This way, when something goes wrong, its far easier for me to diagnose it by myself...

Once I get everything finished, I do plan on going to a local chassis dyno, and spending some quality time getting everything dialed in to perfection... And a few runs down a local 1/4-mile dragstrip just to make sure... ;) I've got a friend who's working on a 750-hp 1973 Maverick Grabber, and we're both going to be finished at about the same time, if things continue on the current schedule -- so we'll take both cars down to the strip on the same weekend and see what they can do. (Of course, we won't race each other directly -- he'd smoke me in that 2,800-pound car! Maybe some bracket-racing, though... Should be fun...)

Cheers mate. There has only ever been one Mini so I'm a little

Yeah it is a shame. :grumpy: Maybe in the next version. 👍

I meant to differentiate your era car from the newer model, although the newer one is quirky and kinda cute, I reckon it's got nothing on those older funky ones 👍

It's OK mate, I was only messing. :) We won't go down the road of discussing whether the BMW is a Mini or not. ;)

But then again:

Jerry, you should stick a Hyabusa into that mini, then wack on a super/turbo charger! :dopey: 👍!

I know I smoke and I'm aware that it's bad for my health, but what you are suggesting will push my luck a little too far. ;)

daily driver:
Year/Make/Model: 1989 Jeep XJ (Cherokee)
Drivetrain: 4.0L MPI straight 6, AW4 4speed auto, NP242 transfercase with 2wd, fulltime 4wd, parttime 4wd, parttime 4lo (2.72 reduction).
Front axle: Dana 30, high pinion, non-disconnect, 3.55 gear ratio
Rear axle: Dana 35 (POS) non C-clip, 3.55 gear ratio
Tires: 31 10.5 x 15 BFG AT
Major Mods: 4.5 inches of lift, fenders cut for tire clearance, swaybar disconnects, HD trackbar, custom front bumper, cb radio, roof rack, etc
Power: I have no idea, probably over 150 HP, but at least 200ft-lbs of torque a relatively low rpms

240K miles and about 13 Miles Per Gallon (on a good day)

I also have a 1991 Jeep XJ and a 1988 Jeep YJ (Wrangler). I am going to move the off-road parts over to the 1991 XJ and make that my daily driver/easy trail rig. The YJ is getting a stroker (4.0 engine with 4.2 crank, bore over to 4.5-4.7 liters. Over 200 hp and at least 250ft-lbs of torque at a low rpm) and is going to be set up for rock crawling.

all together my Jeeps have about 700,000 miles on them.

I drive my Jeeps slow, they have been lifted so have a high center of gravity. The suspension is softer than stock (gives good flex over uneven surfaces). The tires are made for off-road grip and to resist punctures and side wall tears, but don't give good feedback and are heavy so they are harder to get going, and harder to stop. So I am that guy going barely over the speed limit (if not at or under it) that all the others swerve around, but I stay to the right and keep a safe distance from the car in front of me.

I do all my fast driving on the PS2 now.

I used to own a GTI and a good friend had a GTI cup car that I drove a few times.

Daily Car:

Ford Focus td di zetec 2001
1.8 diesel, 90bhp, nice and frugal to suit my student status :indiff:

I also drive a Ford Transit when home from Uni
Faster than my car tho, it has 125 horse power!
