In this requested comparison, the
Saleen S7, BMW M5, Ford GT and
Mercedes SLR will battle at Laguna Seca.
Saleen S7
Bhp - 550
Torque - 526.98 Ft.Lbs
Weight - 1250 Kg
400 Meters Time - 11.730 Seconds
1000 Meters Time - 20.583 Seconds
Max Speed Test - 216.59 Mph
Laguna Seca Lap Time - 1'31.576
T1 - 23.273
T2 - 44.930
T3 - 1'08.576
Finish Line - 1'31.576
The Saleen S7 has the worst stock settings for gears 1 and 2 I can think off, very long first gear, that takes you to a very short second gear.
That put aside, at Test Course, it did'nt perform
to badly. Nice 400 meters time, followed by a strong top speed of 216 Mph.
At Laguna, well, what would you expect from an extremelly fat American car?
Understeer?
Yes, and lots of it, in the first lap (getting used to the car lap), I went into the sand four times, this was due to the amount of understeer, I was expecting it, but not as much as I got.
The brakes don't make up for it either, I was having to brake
very early, especilly for turns such as the Corkscrew.
So, the Saleen is a (very) fast car, and is quite light for what it is (1250 Kg), but has lots of understeer and takes ages to enter and exit corners.
BMW M5
Bhp - 499
Torque - 384.06 Ft.Lbs
Weight - 1715 Kg
400 Meters Time - 12.583 Seconds
1000 Meters Time - 22.278 Seconds
Max Speed Test - 200.97 Mph
Laguna Seca Lap Time - 1'32.986
T1 - 23.917
T2 - 46.081
T3 - 1'08.597
Finsih Line - 1'32.986
The BMW M5, most powerful BMW road car in GT4, and compared to the Mercesdes SLR, Ford GT and Saleen S7, the M5 is, on paper, much worse, but can it out perform it's new rivals on the track?
The M5 has 51 Bhp less than the Saleen, and way over 100 Ft.Lbs less of torque, and to round it of, it's nearly 500 Kg heavier, maybe thats why it's 400 meters time of 12.583 seconds just could'nt match the Saleens time of 11.730.
It did'nt get better, the 1000 meters times of 22.278 seconds was nearly two seconds slower than the Saleens, and the BMW just managed to break to 200 Mph barrier acheving a speed of 200.97 Mph.
But things change, from getting slowley worse for the BMW, it started to get slowly better at Laguna Seca, despite having a 7 speed gearbox, it was set up better than the Saleens, the brakes are better aswell, and although the BMW M5 has understeer, it dose'nt have as much as the Saleen.
The BMW was just 0.5 seconds slower than the Saleen when they crossed T1, but losts nearly two seconds bringing home a time of 46.081 seconds at T2.
But then, the BMW's brilliant brakes and ability to enter and exit turns much faster than the Saleen meant it was able to catch up with the Saleen and was now just 0.040 seconds behind at T3.
But that could'nt last, in the last few corners before the finish, the Saleen was able to pull away and beat the BMW M5 by 1.5 seconds at the finish.
Ford GT
Bhp - 499
Torque - 500.01 Ft.Lbs
Weight - N/A
400 Meters Time - 11.327 Seconds
1000 Meters Time - 20.757 Seconds
Max Speed Test - 209.87 Mph
Laguna Seca Lap Time - 1'32.109
T1 - 23.031
T2 - 45.138
T3 - 1'08.267
Finish Line - 1'32.109
The Ford GT, I used the 6 Speed Concept Version, it has around 50 Bhp less than the 'non concept' version, but can still rival the other cars in this comparison.
The gears are quite alot shorter on the concept version, mainly because there's an extra gear added on. This helped at the 400 meters, beating both the Saleen and BMW M5, but then loosing to the Saleen at 1000 meters and max speed.
I noticed the Ford to have quite alot of understeer in the first half of Laguna Seca (up to the straight before the Corkscrew), maybe because the corners are all
nearly at 90 degree angles, making the Ford want to go into the sand quite alot.
Once I was used to the understeer though the Ford was producing sector times faster than the Saleen and BMW, at sector 3 up to the finish, the Ford seemed to loose time compared to the other cars though, I knew this becasue at T3, the Ford was nearly equal to the Saleen and BMW, but was slower than the Saleen at the finish line.
After the 5 laps, the best lap time was 1'32.109, 0.6 slwoer than the Saleen, but around 0.8 seconds faster than the BMW.
Mercedes SLR McLaren
Bhp - 616
Torque - 575.73 Ft.Lbs
Weight - 1768 Kg
400 Meters Time - 11.599 Seconds
1000 Meters Time - 20.799 Seconds
Max Speed Test - 213.35 Mph
Laguna Seca Lap Time - 1'32.413
T1 - 23.576
T2 - 46.618
T3 - 1'08.425
Finish Line - 1'32.413
The Mercedes is the only car in this test with over 600 Bhp, it has the most Bhp and Torque, but also wins the prize for heaviest car in this test, just 60 Kg heavier than the BMW M5.
So, the weight is the main reason why it lost to the Ford and Saleen at 400 meters, and just lost to the Ford at 1000, and the Saleen gets the comfortable first.
At max speed, well, the Mercedes had beaten the BMW in 4th gear alone, a max speed of 213 Mph ssecured 2nd, behind the Saleen yet again.
The Mercedes is similar to the Ford in understeer terms, they both have around the same amount, but the Mercesdes is slower out of turns due to weight.
At T1 the Mercedes was placed 3rd ahead of the BMW, the positions stayed the same at T2, at T3, the Mercedes stole the Saleens position, now the Ford led, followed by the Mercedes, then Saleen, then BMW.
But it went downhill at the last sector, the Mercedes finsihed 3rd, just behind the Ford and just ahead of the BMW.
So, the Saleen wins all the tests, but that dose'nt mean it's the best overall car, or is it?

Conclusion
Saleen - Very fast and good accelration, but bad handling and big price tag.
Ford - Very nice car, not bad handling either, comes for free if you want the concept version.
Mercedes - Extremelly expensive, but also pretty fast, not bad handling but could be better.
BMW - In a class of it's own, to good for other luxury sedans, but not good enough for the supercars, quite cheap (110,000 est.) good value for money.
