PS3 General Discussion

Uh, no. You add real money to your PSN Master Account and then buy things.

That's not what he's talking about.

In Tekken 5: DR, you buy the game for $15, and then for "Gallery Mode" you can buy endings from past and present Tekken games using the "Gold" (aka Tekken Money).

OK, that's what I thought you meant. 👍

Now I'm hoping they release T5DR to the US, sucks not haivng ghost traning. That was a cool part with the psp verison. Tekken Dojo will have o do on my psp. still a great handheld fighter.

Well, I finally got my PS3 this morning. 👍

So, I go to create a PSID, and it requires that I update my console. So I try to.

Notice "try". When I'm downloading from the internet, it goes to 37%, then it just stops. So I download the update manually via PC and install it with my PSP. So I get that done.

So, I try to create a PSID, and try to register "Duck". And how typical, it wouldn't work, without giving me any reason. So I use "DuckRacer1" instead. And that worked.

So now, I go into the PS store. It's definitely well organized, a lot better than the Xbox Live Marketplace, but since the thing acts like a webpage, it's slow and clunky. Please, make it integrated.

And now I want to download some stuff. So, I go into the PS Store, and I want to download the GT:HD demo. So, it slowly but steadily downloads. But wait, it gets to 9% and says it's getting an error. And it's not just that. The Motorstorm and F1 demos are getting errors too.

To be quite honest, it's pretty pathetic. There's not even a million people with PS3s out there, yet the servers are so bogged down it's really not all that funny. And it's not like I can queue up a few downloads and play some games, so even if it does stop working, it's not a waste of time.

If Sony really wants to create a near flawless online service like XBL, they better start working hard.

Kind of unfair of you to judge the service by the tail end of the Holidays when around 800K people are downloading GT: HD and other demo's. You have to remember how many people probably got PS3's for Christmas, and are now downloading tons of Demos.

The other thing is that Sony is currently doing maintanence on their servers, adding new ones and increasing bandwidth, which left a few out of commision currently. Once all the servers are back up everything should be back to normal.

I'd also not worry about the other features, as they'll be updated in a big March Update to double up with the European Release.

As for your username, it's too few character IIRC. It has to be more than 4. Pako has "GTP-Pako" or something. I'd suggest you do the same :P Duckracer1 is kinda cheesy :P

But, we'll see how well XBL holds up when Halo 3 demo releases. I mean, afterall, it did get amazingly slow when a TRAILER for Gears of War released on the market place...I doubt a large sized demo for Halo 3 will leave XBL unscathed.

Funny, I had the same expirence the frist time I booted up. PS store was all jacked up but after a while it works perfectly with blazing fast downloads.
During Xmas time everything was going fast.

Hey Duck the servers were bad when GTHD came out. It may or may not have somthing to do with Tekken5 being out.

I added Pako not knowing his username, heck it may not even be him afterall :) and it isnt. As I now checked.

Come now.. a measly 800,000 users? What happens in a year's time, when there's ten times as many users? Will their servers be ten times as fast? I doubt it.

Hopefully. I want my GTHD demo before it gets pulled! :grumpy:

Well, DuckRacer1 is practically what I use almost everywhere, and I think GTP-Duck would be cheesy too. :P I'll see what I can do though.

But then Sony's online service has only just been released, and Xbox Live has been around for years.

Okay, I have another problem. I popped in the Blu-ray Talladega Nights movie that came with the system, and the resolution drops to 480p. Why can't I play it at 720p?

I'm using the PS2 component cables, too.

That's a fault in the PS3. It has no internal scaler, so it's very limited as to what resolutions it can display at besides what it's "supposed" to display at.

Blu-ray through PS3 is limited to 1080p, 1080i, and 480p. It cannot display at 720p.

On the flip side, there are some games that can display only at 720p, but not 1080i or 1080p.

So if you have a 720p TV (LCD/Plasma/DLP), you're screwed. And if you have a 1080i TV (CRT/Projection), you're still screwed. Sony went a little too far with the "1080p" thing, and the fact is that a 1080p TV is actually the only kind that can display everything that the PS3 will attempt to spit out (480p/720p/1080i/1080p).

People are calling it a major design flaw, and they're right. There's some hope that it can be resolved by a firmware update, but some people believe that it will require a hardware scaler that the PS3 simply doesn't have. Which is odd, in a "HD" gaming system, because every other piece of HD hardware out there (DVD players, TVs, even the X360) all have internal scalers. But not the PS3.

Hmm... it seems that you're correct. I put in the movie displaying at 1080i, and it worked. The picture wasn't very impressive though, either because the BD version was rushed for the PS3 launch and/or 1080i isn't my TV's native resolution.

Well, I have a 720p LCD (that also displays 1080i), so it looks like I'm good. That said, 1080i looks like crap and it's a hassle to switch modes.

Yeah, LCD isn't the best at handling interlaced sources that aren't film-based (my TV does a great job at inverse 3:2 pulldown, though, so film sources are displaying at their full resolution). Other sources, like games, it discards one entire field, so you're only seeing half of the actual vertical resolution. Effectively, 1920x540.

I noticed this today when I played GT4 for the first time on my new LCD. On the old composite inputs, it looked like utter crap in a can, so I ran out and bought some component cables for it. The "1080i" mode is actually only a minor improvement over 480p, because of the way my TV handles (or rather, doesn't handle) 1080i video sources. And although I'm not 100% sure, I think I may have lost half the framerate at the same time.. discarding one field would do that.

I swear, you don't realize how fugly these old games are until you see the way they're truly being rendered. As great as GT4 looked on my SDTV, it doesn't hold a candle anymore. Even Forza stomps it graphically now, because the 360's emulator is rendering the game at 720p. Makes me pine for GT5 something fierce, but I know it's still two years away. :(

So, here's an awesome tidbit for everyone.

Downloading content from the JPN stores with a US CC is possible...if it's a debit card...and you only do additions of 40HK each time.

Which means I'm getting Tekken 5: DR as we speak.

Oh, the irony!!

Jedi - When Sony has twice as many users, they'll likely have twice as many servers. Speed is not the issue, the amount of users on the PSN far exceeds that of Sony's expectations, and it's very likely that they are having to upgrade their servers.

The difference between XBL and PSN is that the PSN is free, thus it will have a significantly higher amount of users online. However, I think Tekken 5: DR will more than fund Sony. At $15 a pop, if they sell to HALF of the populous, and take HALF of that money, then they will still come out with 3 Million bucks in the pocket, and I hardly think that the PSN runs them 3 Million a month. If the PS3 user base increases at the rate it has been, for another two months, that's 1.6 Million users. Sony has some work cut out for them, but with the extra cash they're sure to make with games like T5: DR and Calling all Cars (as well as a significant amount of Lemmings and Go! Sudoku users)...I think the free service is awesome, and exceeds that of XBL (if you consider how much XBL costs).

I give Sony a year tops, and they will have XBL begging to be free.

I just saw an article about the XBL down time over at Kotaku. Hell, no one was downloading anything and it goes down. GTHD has received more media coverage than anything that has been on XBL.

Excuse my fanboyism but, I'm just tired of all of this unjustified negativity.

Try being a firearm enthusiast in SoCal. That'll get you prepared for this crap.

You know, servers do go down occasionally. It really has nothing to do with the amount of people using them at one point.

Yes, I do understand that. So, when PSN goes down, it's no big deal. Right? My point is that those who criticize PSN for not meeting the demand of serving out GTHD are now mute in criticizing the much more mature and tested XBL down time with little demand on it's servers.

anyone want to donate a PS3 to the "Poor Brazilian Foundation" It's actually one kid, who loves cars, racing, modding and so on. If interested in helping this poor guy please call 011-55-27-555-1986 and ask for Rafael Fideles.

Thank You,
Ronaldinho.

You would think that for what, $20,000,000 for every 400K users (which is probably how many people are on XBL currently) there is NO excuse for it to go down.

If someone pays for cable TV, and it goes down for a few hours, Cox or Charter, whoever you use, will "refund" the lost time. But MS is suddenly immune right? Doesn't matter since it's "only" $50 a year right?

I'm sorry, but for a paid subscription, it should NEVER go down. I can expect that of a free service, but paid? Absolutely unacceptable.

50 bucks a month is downright ridiculous.

Whoops, my bad, that was a typo, I meant to put $50 a year.

Still, it's very ridiculous, since the QoS is matched by the PS3's online, the only thing you get an edge on is it's features, which are more related to the 360 itself, not the XBL service.
