PS3 General Discussion

I haven't heard of any. While there are reports of PS3's being "bricked", it doesn't sound any worse than any other piece of electronics. There's bound to be a few bad units out there, it's unavoidable.

I know some people are going to love the following statement, but here goes:

The PS3 failure rate does not appear to be anywhere close to that of the Xbox360. On the whole, the unit itself appears much better designed, especially in terms of heat distribution.

That is what I've been trying to say (with the Wii alongside the PS3), but I was accused of being a Nintendo fanboy for saying it. The person I'm arguing says that the 360 doesn't have any more problems with overheating, and that the 360 is far out in front of reliability between the 3 of them.

Heh.. he's wrong.

But, on the flip side, I've yet to see any proof that the Red Death is actually caused by overheating. I've seen 360s locked in those little airtight kiosk booths, damn near burning the hand of the guy who goes in there to change the disc, running for months on end, twelve hours a day, without dying.

Fact is, nobody knows what causes it. Except Microsoft, of course.. but they're not about to tell us what the real problem is.

You own a Mac. You hate everything.
If that wasn't sarcasm, that'd have to be the dumbest thing you've ever said.

I don't like Microsoft. But they put out IMO a great product (the X360), so I use it, and love it. But with Windows and Office, they can throw it away for all I care.

With Sony, I think they're a great hardware company. If I had a million dollars and I could choose any TV and laptop (wait, it comes with XP, scratch that :grumpy:), I'd choose one of their 1080p LCDs. And the quality of their hardware thankfully extends to the PS3. From touch-sensitive buttons (coolest thing since the automobile) to the overall solid build of it, I'm pretty confident it'll last a long time. And even if it poops out, I have the 1 year warranty.
Just in: Xbox 360 warranty has been increased to 1 year (from 90 days) to match the PS3.
Just in... about a week ago. Speaking of the X360 warranty, aren't you supposed to get yours fixed from about 3 and a half months ago, so we can get going with the TDU club?

Unless if you're talking about overheating when you say "heat distribution", my PS3 is like a furnace, constantly blowing out warm air. Not hot, per se, but pretty darn warm.

Then again, I'm sitting 3 feet away from it, and it doesn't have the best ventilation. :indiff:

From what I've heard, it's much more efficient at removing the heat from the system, rotating air from outside the unit, through it, and out the other side, moreso than the 360 does (which features a more traditional heatsink/fan combination like a PC motherboard). That's why the air coming out of the PS3 is warmer than that of the 360, because it's actually doing what it's supposed to be doing. This is also the reason the PS3 is so much quieter.

This thread is ridiculous. Hint: Brand loyalty is flat-out retarded - they ALL just want your money. The "console wars" are just people trying to justify their purchase.

Choose the system you think is better (or both), but don't "pick a side" like its your political party or something.

Jedi, Jeremy, enough with the argueing! It seems that you two do this in everything thread. Neither of you are going to say that the other is right, so either end it now or switch to PMs!

Vonie: Yeah, I'm pretty sure the PS3 can recognize most anything Bluetooth. With my headset, for example, I just went to accessory settings>Bluetooth headset. From there it scanned for any Bluetooth accessories (maybe just headsets, if it can tell any difference. During that time you do whatever needs done with your device to pair it. After that you just need to enter the device's passcode.

You're still missing my point, Swift, since you continue to bring up the whole "comparing the services" thing, when that was never what I was talking about.

As I've stated repeatedly, I used to be the same way. There was a time when I followed Sony just as blindly as Jeremy does. That Microsoft was the devil, anything even remotely related to the Xbox was utter garbage, and that Sony could do no wrong. Since I went multi-console and took my blinders off, it's like a whole new world, and now I find those people, who think as I used to think, utterly pathetic.

Actually, it is you who missed the entire point of my post since all you wanted to see was a comparison. This is what I'm talking about. You and Jeremy both are so set into whatever mode this is you're in that you don't even think about someone else making a point.

Let's see what I said here:
And your opinion is?

Sorry, but you sound just as arrogant as you painting Jeremy to be. All of your points are complete opinion with nothing to back anything up. You say you entilted to that opinion and so is Jeremy. Except he actually has played on the PSN so his opinion has at least a decent foundation while your only foundation is, "The PS3 is not the second coming of Christ".

In other words, everyone's opinion is as valid as everyone else's. Whether you disagree with it or not is irrelevant. Jeremy likes Sony and the PS3 and is defending it. So what? I've seen him slam it before as well.

All I'm trying to do is to get some people to understand that just because something has "Sony" imprinted on the front of it, doesn't necessarily make it better than something else.

Well...duh. But Jeremy is bringing up points to backup his specific argument as to why he thinks XBL isn't worth the money. Why can't he have that opinion and back it up with some of the points he has? Why is that such a bad thing? Because you think XBL is better because of certain features? Why does his opinion make you upset?

Right now, you're arguing about his opinion. How useless is that. This reminds me of the useless "logic" prattle in the Religious Tolerance thread.

Let's look at this:
Swift
I personally think that both consoles are currently a waste of money at this time. Does that make me a fanboy? Does that make me hard headed? Nope, it just means that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it until something happens on one of those consoles to change my mind. I can justify my opinion and I know I'm "right" but all of my justifications are purely personal. So what's the point in arguing with me about it?

Now, what are you going to say about that opinion? I'm just trying to gauge what it is you're so up in arms about with Jeremy. My opinion IS correct and I think it's correct for EVERYONE. Whether other's decide to go with it or not is up to them.

Honestly, both of you need to chill before I MAKE both of you chill.

Well said.

I've no argument with you, Swift. Read Zrow's post that I quoted above. You don't fall into that category.

Okay, pros and cons of my 20GB PS3 so far...

PROS
  • FREE ONLINE PLAY - Lag-free 40 player online in Resistance says it all.
  • CONTROLLER - It's definitely not as bad as I thought. At all. The motion sensing is pretty cool, and I really don't notice often that I don't have rumble. And the triggers are definitely not as bad as people thought. And it's rechargeable, so it doesn't eat up AAs.
  • BUILD QUALITY - What more is there to say? The touch sensitive buttons, internal HDD, HDD-access light, slot loading drive, etc, make my X360 and to an extent my Wii seem so last gen.
  • BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY - 98% of the 8000+ PSone and PS2 titles work properly, as opposed to the ~33% rate of the X360. So hey, you can sell your PS2 on eBay now.
  • SWAPPABLE HDD - Okay, so what if I find that my 20GB becomes too small for my needs? On the X360, I have to fork out $100 for a 20GB HDD. On the PS3, I can get a 120GB laptop HDD for about the same price on Newegg. If I find that pricey, I can also choose an 80GB for $65 at the same website. And then I can sell the 20GB HDD on eBay to recoup some money. How do you like them apples? I sure do, and it's one of the biggest reasons I settled for a 20GB PS3.
  • BLUETOOTH - Wired X360 headset? $20. Wireless X360 headset? $50. Wireless Bluetooth Headset that works with the PS3? $30. Compatibility with other bluetooth objects, like cell phones, unlike the X360 headset? Priceless.
  • MESSAGING - Okay, so when I select one of my "buddies", it shows me sent and received messages that we've sent back 'n forth, something that I can't do on my X360. Definitely is pretty useful.
CONS
  • PLAYSTATION STORE - Okay, this is a biggie. It acts like a web page, so with a controller, it's hard to navigate. And a year from now, when there's 75 demos, 400 trailers, and such, it'll be messy. Not to mention, 95% of the time, downloads stop for no reason.
  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY - Sure, 98% of PSone and PS2 titles work, but unless you're using a crappy composite cable, games look like absolute ****. And you pay $15 for an accessory (memory card adapter) you're only going to use once.
  • NO CUSTOM SOUNDTRACK IN GAMES - Or at least in most of them. I want to listen to my music in GT:HD! Or Need for Speed Carbon! Or Fight Night Round 3! Isn't this supposed to be the biggest reason why we put music on the HDD anyway? And while we're on the topic of music...
  • INTERFACE - It's not intuitive. So I don't know how to create a playlist/folder. Nor can I find out how much space I have left on my HDD. I'm sure these things can be done. I just don't know how because the interface is tough to figure out.
  • LACK OF ENTITLEMENTS - Come on, admit it: achievements are a big selling point. They add replay value to a game. And they prove to your friends that you've done something big, like complete the Call of Duty 2 single player on Veteran difficulty. Or got Celebrity Status in Burnout Revenge. There's nothing like this on the PS3. Sure, there's points in Resistance, but I haven't figured out a way to see if any of my "buddies"
    have specific ones.
  • CONTROLLER - While it's better than I thought it'd be, the triggers aren't true triggers, and my finger almost slipped off the gas in Motorstorm. And no, I'm not putting a vulcan deathgrip on it. My hands were sweaty. Even though you forget that there isn't rumble, that doesn't negate the fact that rumble added to the game, and it'd definitely improve Resistance and GTHD. Motion sensing? At this point it's a gimmick. So what if I can turn the car by tilting the controller? Analog sticks are much more precise and useful. I do know that there are games coming out that'll use the Sixaxis tech creatively (like Army of Two), but as of now I'd take rumble over motion sensing any day.
  • NO SCALING - I can't play half the games in HD on my 2-year-old 52" CRT. Nor can I play Blu-ray movies natively on my 26" LCD, so Talladega Nights looks like total crap. With the X360, I select a resolution (1080i or 720p respectively), and everything displays in the specified resolution. No "and"s, "or"s, or "but"s. With the PS3, everything isn't so simple. For something that calls itself the end-all for everything HD media, this should be common sense.

You might have noticed that I didn't touch on the subject of Linux or Blu-ray. I've only played one improperly mastered version of a movie on a non-native resolution, so until I play something like Black Hawk Down on the 52" CRT, I'm not commenting on Blu-ray. With Linux, I haven't tried it, but I heard it runs as fast as an 800MHz PC.

Duck - I agree with the crappiness of the PS3 GUI - it's the same as the PSP and I've hated that for 2 years now. Web browsing is a JOKE.

Wireless internet connection sucks - my laptop gets 95% signal 6 inches away from my PS3, but I had to run ethernet for my PS3.

On the plus side, I can't stop playing GT:HD and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Scaling isn't a big deal for me since my Panny does a decent job converting everything to 768p.

The big down side I see is the lack of games right now.

The PSP had many options added after release. The user interface is very intuitive. I find it easy to navigate and I know how much HDD space I left. 43GBs. Theres tons of features it doesnt have that the psp added later on.

Custom soundtracks is not a PS3 or a Sony issue. Its up to the developer to add such feature. Not every 360 games has custom sound tracks. As far as achievements I'm glad sony does't have such a useless feature. The only real use is people will play crappy games just to get the achievements. Its addictive. I know becuase i bought eko shirts for the 10 points in TDU.

I'm not going to debate yout opinons because thats what they are your opinons.

I'm just going to add in my word about the online (PSN vs XBL). Sorry, no full blown write-up.

Pretty much, I agree with Jeremy (oh noes! ;)). The $50 per year deal is a ripoff. The online play, which is what you're paying for, is about the same on both systems. IMO, Resistance online is better than most games on the 360. Now, don't get me wrong, I'll probably buy another year come February when my current subscription ends, since, hey, it's $4 a month. Cheaper than a Starbucks.

When it comes to the service in general, XBL beats PSN. Downloads aren't erratic, there's more features, etc. However, I do think that the PSN is going to catch up in that area. Maybe not surpass it, but definitely catch up.

So, would I rather have XBL Silver or PSN? At this point, I'd choose XBL, until they get the downloads fixed on PSN.

Umm... what? Everything has it. You press the Xbox button (or whatever it's called), then you select your music, then it gets played. It's universal.

Only the gamerscore whores.

Its addictive. I know becuase i bought eko shirts for the 10 points in TDU.
And thus that's a big selling point of achievements. It gives you motivation to do things you wouldn't normally do. Like try to complete X game at Superhard difficulty or whatever.

You don't need to. You're just missing out. ;)

I never looked at XBL like that but I guess you are paying for the servers. I know MS handels the servers for all its games. For Sony I'm not sure how that works.

As far as sound tracks I never used in on 360, just Xbox and thats how it used to be. So i learned something new.

Sony has dedicated servers as well. Every game that says "PSN Compatible" runs on the Sony dedicated Servers. Sony leaves it up to developers to use their own servers or the PSN.

This is *exactly* what I was trying to get across.

And I agree. Though, in the midwest I do not suffer from the same problems (my downloads have never taken longer than 30 minutes for any game), I am fully aware that there is a download problem, and that some things need to be fixed, but Sony is working on it, and it's supposed to release in march.

One of the only LCD's, which has the black level then any Plasma on the market and better pictures then plasma’s, is the Sony W2000 series of Bravia's. Even the Sony W2000 series of Bravia is better then any CRT HD TV, but CRT HD is not true HD, since HD was designed mainly for LCD's and Plasma's.

Wow. There are so many things wrong with that paragraph, I don't know where to begin. Since this really isn't the right forum for this discussion, I'll simply point you to a few places where you can educate yourself.

"CRT isn't true HD". Sheesh. :dunce: And yes, I've seen the Bravia line of TVs, and no, it still doesn't come close to the image on this, let alone this.

If you're arguing about HD, you could also say that most LCDs and virtually all Plasmas and DLPs also aren't HD. For the simple reason that "True HD" is defined as 1920x1080.

While they're starting to catch up, it's no secret that 1080p TVs are still in the severe minority of "HD"TVs out there.

This is exactly why I convinced my father to wait when HD hit the scene a few years back.

Smallest 1080p TV I've seen was 37in's. Thats way to big for my current gaming set up were 23In is a perfect fit. 1080p is far from being main streamed.

If that was the case wouldn't 1600x1200 be unoticable on a 19in LCD monitor. or 2048x1536 on a 22in monitor. Or even 2560x1600 on a 30In. So basically yes it would be noticeable.
