PS3 General Discussion

What is the "HD Camera" you mention, Ricci?

Basically, Sony is releasing another "eyetoy". But, this one will have resolutions between (from what I understand) 480p and 720p.

However, unless I misunderstood my Japanese counterpart, broadcasting to other users (video chat?) will not be done in "HD". Still, it's something I'd like to get my hands on to video chat with other people.

It is impossible for a TV that does not support 1080p to display 1080p unless it has a scaler chip that will upscale all signals to 1080p.

By definition a TV that does not support 1080p would not have the ability to scale the image to the native resolution of the TV.

you would need to have an external scaler in that case to downscale 1080p into a format your tv accepts

The update looks cool, while us early adapters get the beta version. i'm guessing Sony Connetct will be on a different server than the Playstaion Store at least I hope so. That setup looks pretty nice.

Does that mean we can enable photo, music and video sharing? Comments and blogs looks interesting. This is the real PSN I'm guessing.

about the System saving shut down thats pretty neat the same feature in all Nvidia 6,7,8 gpus.

Have any of you found a way to zoom in (close) to pictures viewed on the machine? I know about the option to automatically zoom 4:3 images on a 16:9 screen, but I want more.

Have you tried hitting triangle, then selecting the zoom option (looks like a magnifying glass with a + sign)?

edit: Nope, I don't think it's upscaling. 1080i looks a lot cleaner than 720p does.

It's a strange artifact of inferior scalers that makes 1080i look better than 720p on 720/768 displays. Theoretically, sending 720p to a 720p (or even 768p) display should be "pixel perfect". But what seems to happen is that the incoming signal is always converted to the native resolution. When you have a 480i/p or 1080i signal, the TV processes it correctly, but 720p shouldn't be converted. The end result is a slight ghosting (aliasing), and a massive softening of the image. This is clearly visible on Sony Grand Wega (rear-projectoin LCD's) and Pioneer plasmas (standard and Elite). Current Fujitsu plasmas, for example, don't have this problem. Try it for yourself with the PS3 (or XBOX/XBOX360).

I've been curious to try this 1080i thing just to see if it really is any different.

Because realistically, I can't see how 1080i could possibly be better than 720p. It's that "i" thing, you see.. interlaced. That means each "frame" you see is actually only 1920x540, deinterlaced and upscaled. Equals fugly.

Then again, I do have a 1080p TV.. why I'd want to use any interlaced signal is beyond me. :)

Yeah, definitely. My previous judgements were from the motorstorm demo. I'm going to have to get some kind of reference media to really test this out. That, and I'm going to have to find my TV's manual.

So, according to Time Magazine, Resistance: Fall of Man was the 5th best game this year, outshined by Wii Sports, which took first, and Gears of War, New Super Mario Brothers, and Zelda: TP, which came in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.

Personally, I find it rather amusing the pretty much the only good thing they say about Gears of War is that it looks really good, and that there's heatwaves coming off of the barrell of the gun.

Well, I might be getting a PS3 within the next month or so, and im contemplating weather to get it off ebay or go for a retail store just for the warranty. I was really close to bidding on this, but I didnt have any in the bank.

So, as I dont have an HDTV (at the moment at least) I wont be needing anything involved in the HD department for now, maybe 2-3 months down the line though.

Should I go for ebay or retail?

Thanks again for your opinion and help

-Alex

Retail, they aren't THAT hard to find. I'm sure if you check 5 days out of the week for two weeks, since that's the time frame you're looking for one, you'll definately find one.

Anyone know how I can put .max Max Drive or Xport files onto the ps3 in mem card format? Is there some kind of decoder availible or something?

Can't you just use the PS2 memory card with the PS2 memory card add on.

1. It's Time magazine.

2. Could you find a link for their list? I tried looking for it on their website, yet I couldn't find it.

No, because I wouldn't be dumb enough to ask the question if I could indeed do that.

There are max drive files (etc) on the internet that I want, but I don't feel like buying some obsolete max drive pos.

RE; Time magazine top 10
Very much the opinion of someone that knows very little. No mention of FFXII - one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year. Or Oblivion. Nah, personal opinion counts for little, accept as opinion and not a valued judgement. Let's face it, there's millions of opinions on the Internet, most of which are BS (depending on your point of view of course! ;))

Ok, im going ebay for sure. Im looking at some of the prices and they are LESS than retail, and selling at a loss. So, in about 3 days or so, I will most likely have one

---------------

This also sold at a loss too, but there are about 200 more listed, so I think I have time.

Typical. Why the heck is Prey and Table Tennis in that list?! And Wii Sports at #1... meh. It's very fun, and deserves a spot in it, but not #1. Maybe #4 or #7.

As for Gears, while I do think it deserves that spot, the reasons he gave were stupid.

With Resistance, IMO it deserves #4 or #5.

And like slackbladder said, where's Oblivion or Final Fantasy? Or G.R.A.W. or Rainbow Six? Seriously.

You can obviously tell this was made by someone who plays games a few hours a day and who only get their info from the media. He obviously hasn't played all the contenders.

Hey now, Prey was a good game.

Totally off topic, but I just hit #199 on Blast Factor's leader boards, up from 770+, lol.

It was actually extremely fun, right when it hit's Stage 5 the action goes through the roof, very intense. I'm convinced that stage 7 is impossible.

I hated the demo. It ended too quickly!

Once I'm done with BLACK, which I haven't played for two weeks now, (graphics look horrible on PS3), I'll get this game. Aren't there 90 stages, or something?

I unlock hard on the demo, and it's pretty intense. How much more intense can this game get?

At 1080p, this game looks fantastic. When grandma came over for Christmas, she thought it looked amazing and tried it. She did pretty well with it.

I'm also a fan of Blast Factor, it really is a great little game especially with the volume cranked up! 👍 :)

You have no idea man! It's amazingly intense.

For instance, they add enemies that come CLOSER to you when you use your blast thing, and then they have enemies that swarm you when you hit them with a wave, it's pretty nuts.

As for the 90 levels, yea there are, but it's more like 7 levels with tons of variations. Basically, by doing different things, you take different paths, i.e. one time you may go through 2 medium and the next you'll go through 2 hard, etc.

I still have a "blast" with it though :)

Use any movie you know extremely well, and any scene that you've seen so many times, you've memorized it. Lord of the Rings is a great transfer, for example. Since the PS3 has issues with scaling DVDs, try a half-decent upconverting DVD player (again, Sony may have a good cheap example). You could try HD cable or satellite, but you'd have trouble watching the same scene again & again (plus, the scalers in those are just awful).

Anyway, back to more realistic uses of the PS3....
