PS3 General Discussion

If that was the case wouldn't 1600x1200 be unoticable on a 19in LCD monitor. or 2048x1536 on a 22in monitor. Or even 2560x1600 on a 30In. So basically yes it would be noticeable.

If you were sitting 10 feet away from the monitor, like with most TVs, the resolution wouldn't be all that noticeable.

Ah so it was a trick question. I sit about 2 11/3 feet away from my 23" since I use it for both TV and PC. At that range it would be noticeable.

OK, I admit I have not searched around as much as I should, but I can't figure out how to create a second account on the PlayStation Network via the PS3. Can you guys point me in the right direction?

The only way you'll be able to do that is to create anohter user (left side of XMB) and then sign up for the PSN for that user. THat would be easiest as well, because you'd simply because to change users instead of having to sign in with a different account each time.

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2510604&postcount=6 I take it you were looking to set up an Asian account...

One thread in the GTHD section had the same thing but with pictures. I told him to come here and post his since he had pictures to go with it, but it looks he never did.

Well, I know that much, but I can't figure out how to get to that point. Any new profiles I create on my PS3 are still linked with my original account with no other options, so I feel a bit stuck.

Huh oh. It may appear Sony blocked other's from creating a second, unique account. Odd.

What I and others did to create a new user was to start up the PS3, move to the far left and moving up to "Create New User." Just follow the instructions and log in. We had no problems.

I'm creating a new account to see if Sony changed stuff around to prevent new users from getting a second account in "Asia."

I'll report back later.

EDIT: Nope. I had no problems creating a new account. Are you sure you logged in into your new account name? Are you sure when you logged into the PSnetwork you selected a MASTER ACCOUNT, or whatever?

Hey guys.

This morning, I said to my mom, "You know... I wonder if Target has Ps3." I got a bunch of Target gift cards for christmas and stuff. I suggested we swing by.

So, anyway, I took a nap after coming back from Kendo practice, and, sure enough, my mom went to Target for some bleach. She wound up coming home with the last Ps3 in stock in the entire area of stores. The store closest to us got 8 of them this morning; the 20gb's went like hotcakes (not as if I wanted one, though). So, she woke me up and asked me to check the receipt to see how much was left on the giftcards. It was like, boom, suprise.

Best christmas/newyear's gift ever. I can't wait until I feel like going out to buy a lotto ticket.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Supposedly Sony shipped a crapload of PS3s lately so they would be for sale today.

Congrats on the PS3 btw. Which version did you get?

It's because you're creating sub accounts and not master accounts.

At least I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

Hmm. I would've thought that the 60GBs would've went first...

People here are cheap

But, anyway, I'm now posting from the ps3. What a pain in the ass.

Allow me to change gears entirely and ask a couple of questions.. hehe.

Can you use HDMI video and optical audio at the same time? I had read somewhere that when you use HDMI, it automatically routes everything through HDMI and disables all other audio output. Since my TV has only stereo outputs, there's zero reason for me to send audio there, and I'd rather spit it out separately to the reciever through the optical cable.

The video problem with PS1/2 games.. I've heard it's an interlacing issue, does it affect 480p games at all, or do those come through unscathed?

You cannot choose to have it output both. The TV I'm purchasing (since my old one broke) has Optical out, so I will simply have the PS3 input to the HDTV and the TV output to the Reciever. There are other options, such as having your PS3 input to the reciever and the reciever to the TV, etc. But it's true that you cannot do both at the same time.

And I'm pretty sure I've addressed the PS1/PS2 problem many times. It stems from users who have their PS3 connected via Compotnent or HDMI. Reason being, not all component or HDMI inputs accept ALL resolutions. So, to avoid compatibility issues, the PS3 will "upscale" PS1/2 games. Howveer, basically the way it does this is by taking each interlaced frame, and putting it together, and the end result is terrible, because essentially you're seeing "two" frames at the same time, which creates a lot of artifacts and jaggies.

Progressive games are not effected, however. And for users that really hate it, it is entirely possible to have HDMI and Composite hooked up at all times, and switch between the two for your games. A pain, yes, but it's a temp solution for people who are really annoyed by it. Doesn't really bother me too much.

Well that sucks. Who's bright idea was that? My reciever doesn't have HDMI, so it has to go to the TV directly. But the only outputs on the TV are standard RCA stereo cables, so the best I could do is 1080p with Pro Logic II.. blech.

EDIT: I think I may have just thought of a workaround, though... If I use an HDMI>DVI cable, it would eliminate the audio signal while maintaining full digital video with HDCP. My TV has two DVI inputs that probably wouldn't be used for much else. Think that would work? There's got to be a way to split them.

I think there has been a bit of misinformation here - you can use the HDMI video output and a TOSLink optical cable at the same time. A very common setup, I'm sure - that's what I'm doing myself.

Jeremy, yes you can use HDMI for video and use any other connections for audio.

Go to Settings>Sound Settings>Audio Output Settings. Then you choose between HDMI, optical, or "Audio Input Connector or AV Multi".

Edit: Beat by Jordan...Quick sonuva...

Yeah, I asked on another board and they said the same thing, quite a few users with that same setup of HDMI/Optical. One less thing.

I need to buy a switchbox again. Crap. Just when I finally had everything wired up perfectly and no longer needed one (my old pre-HD switchbox). I have only one optical input on my receiver, and only one ethernet cable running downstairs (router/modem is upstairs with the computer). Or.. I might could move my router and modem downstairs, and use that hundred-foot cable running upstairs for the computer instead. Hmmmm....

EDIT: Cable problem solved... found a three-way optical splitter/switcher on Monoprice for eight bucks. :) Probably bundle that up with my next order, which will also include a bunch of cables for everything that's yet to come.

Same here.

HDMI to HDTV. TOSLink (optical) to receiver. Just mute the HDTV audio, and crank up the stereo. 👍

Already done. :) In fact, I've done one better, by deactivating the internal speakers entirely. :)

400W>>>>>10W

I used to do that, too. But, my boys want to watch my HDTV from time to time, and they ain't allowed to touch my stereo. So, I gotta keep the HDTV speakers on for them.

Note: Found out my problem. If you set the display settings to HDMI after the sound settings, then I think it reverts sound options to HDMI. At least that's the only reason I could think we couldn't get any optical sound when tried it out.

Gotta try it out again now :)

I just got my HDMI cable (40 bucks for 8 feet was the cheapest I could find! ) and everything now looks AMAZING.

My TV was also advertised as 720p, but the PS3 says it can do 1080i, apparently. I have 1080i running and it looks great, even though I'm not sure if its using some kind of scaler.

edit: Nope, I don't think it's upscaling. 1080i looks a lot cleaner than 720p does.

edit2: Oops, I hit quote instead of edit. Sorry.

most new TVs will accept a 1080i signal even if they are native 720p. My plasma will accept a 1080p signal even though it is a 768p TV. Check your specs on your tv to find out what you have. Do not, under any circumstances, trust something a salesperson told you at BB/CC about electronics :)

Dude, I know more than they do.

My TV is native 720p, but 1080i does look better...

It is impossible for a TV that does not support 1080p to display 1080p unless it has a scaler chip that will upscale all signals to 1080p.

I'd also like to mention that the PS3 (unlike the 360) has a self regulating cooling system. If the PS3 temperature increases, the RPM on the internal fooling fan will also increase, to produce more airflow. Also, should the PS3 ever get TOO hot, to prevent itself from dying (again, unlike the 360) it will auto shut down, and the fan will remain on for a period of what seemed around 60 seconds.

I found this out last night while gaming at a buddies house, his PS3 is in a cabinet (yea, I know, very stupid). Anyway, during a co-op mission in resistance, we noticed how loud the PS3 had become (the fan was MOVING lol) and about 10 seconds later the PS3 shut down. When we opened the cabinet...it was nice and toasty, like a fire. But, I was confused to find the fan STILL on after the PS3 shut down, but it's a very nice perk. A system that saves itself.

Once again I'll bring some of that good "insider" info (though I'm sure it could be found by other members).
