Ideas to be a cleaner driver?

With experience in the game in general, you can get to be extremely precise with your inputs and drive inches from the wall for almost the whole lap. And I do mean using a controller; in fact, the fastest clean times set there are with a DS2 because it offers the ability to make very fast adjustments to stay on the narrow driving line compared with a wheel.

What do you mean? AI act like jerks with no regard to where you are. I feel it is totally fair game to pull ugly moves on them. It's the game :)

Edit: Especially if you are running an inferior car and it will take lots of tiresome winning with another car at other tracks to get enough money to upgrade your car to a competitive standard, then I rather do some ugly pushing aside if I must to win.

Hmm. Well, I drive inferior cars against the Ai all the time. I never have to resort to dirty tricks. 👎 It just takes skill, man....you'll get it eventually.

I'm all for better hygiene. The cleaner the driver the healthier the racing and nobody gets hurt.

I try to be a clean driver, sometimes I just can't. Forinstance. I have the line in the corner(any corner) first and the AI dinglings moves down and pushes me off the track.EEERRRR!!!!

I try to race clean as much as possible.

However I race the same way alot of professional racers do, with the idea "I'll race them the same way they race me". If they race me clean, I'll race them clean. If they are constantly getting in to me, I will not hesitate to use the ol' chrome horn on them.

I don't think I will in this game. There is no incentive to drive cleanly. I doubt you drive inferior cars and win without bumping AI.

I disagree. Whenever I drive races against the AI I usually set the difficulty to at least +4 or +5 on the little slider (as for many cars it provides a fair level of competition from the AI), and it's still more than possible to beat them cleanly, even at narrow circuits like the 'Ring.

One of the members here (RACECAR, I think it might have been) organised a race series in the Mazda MX-5 a while back in the Long Race Series subforum (here's one of the results threads for the series). Each race was in the region of 10 laps in length depending on the circuit. AI difficulty was set to 7 which is fairly high for a basically stock car, and contact with AI cars was strongly discouraged.

Everyone was expected to be honest of course that they'd not run off the circuit though everyone saved replays just in case they were needed for verification. At one of the circuits I had a bit of AI trouble (on two different attempts to do the race cleanly) and made posts asking the other competitors whether they considered my races clean. Here was the first, where I ran off the circuit a little too much, and here was the second, where an AI glitch led to me being punted off the circuit and losing a load of time

To this end, it's definitely worth checking out the Race Series sub-forum, as clean racing is strongly encouraged there despite the AI's best efforts to the contrary. And if you learn to race cleanly when the competition is very difficult, it becomes easy to race cleanly when you have a performance advantage.

Hope this helps 👍

Hi! These days I've been trying being a clean driver. It's more difficult than I thought. For example when I want to overtake a car in some thin tracks it's really difficult. In Nümburgring there a few safe spots to overtake. Could somebody give me any advice? Sorry for bad English as I always say... Bye.

I actually find the Nürburgring a fairly easy circuit to overtake on. I race on the circuit a lot, and when you do that you see that the AI behave in very predictable ways at certain parts of the circuit. In equal cars, you can usually overtake someone on the inside of the downhill section at Hatzenbach (the easy right after the very first corner - here's a handy map so you can identify the corners I'm mentioning) as the AI drivers always keep to the outside of the circuit. Likewise, just after Flugplatz the AI often brakes for absolutely no reason - which really harms their speed on the following quick section, so it's easy to stream past. Late braking into Aremberg is another great place - I've passed as many as three cars into this braking zone before.

Once you've learnt where the AI tend to go even the 'Ring becomes an easy place on which to overtake.

Come on - you can't seriously believe that with the AI being as slow as it is, nobody can defeat them without dirty driving. I have done several 200 A-Spec point races with no AI contact, no wall contact, and no shortcuts, so it is very possible. I agree, however, that there is no built-in incentive to drive cleanly; that motivation has to come either from you or from rules imposed on you in a competition to do so.

You're calling me a liar? Well, I'm glad to prove you wrong,, then. I've written a long list of tuning guides at http://www.gtcarreviews.com/id3.html to make sure abundant power is not to be relied on.

It's certainly possible to win races with inferior cars, but you need to learn to out-brake and out manuever the Ai. I often get passed on the straights, so 90% of the time, I rely on my cornering to win.

Yes, exactly my point.

When you think of it, "inferior car" comes with a buch of assumtions like being able to tune the car, doesn't it? What if you can't tune the car because there are no upgrades? I didn't say "less top speed" did I? I can believe that people are good drivers and can win with an inferior car, but the possiblity to do so would have to be judged case by case (what track, what car against what cars e t c). And no, in the case i have fresh in mind the other day when being flat out in the corners with a wobbly car and not even closing the gap, you wouldn't have mysteriously flown past the AIs on the outside and not even touching them.

you should also learn how to look behind you and defend your line. AI is not going to pass you if you're blocking his line.

True enough. Problem with this argument is you're assuming many of us here fully tune every single car we drive. Have a look around this site, and you'll see alot of us are committed to using inferior or even stock parts. 💡

I'll use a stock, sport, or semi-racing suspension with stock or racing brakes (but no controller), and a fixed differential (1-way, 1.5, or 2-way....if needed) to help me avoid the Ai, to give me a few more options in those corners so that I DON'T wind up hitting them, or them hitting me. If the Ai raced as cleanly as I do, I wouldn't even need to tune this far.

So what often happens is the Ai gets past me on straights, but I can outwit them in the corners. Often, my races wind up being very close....anywhere from -.001 (seriously) to 2.0 seconds between me and the 2nd place car 75% of the time. If I find myself blowing away my opponents, I'll often restart the race, going back at it with less power/less parts. I get bored with easy wins, and ramming Ai DEFINITLEY creates easy wins. 👎

What if you can't tune the car because there are no upgrades? I didn't say "less top speed" did I? I can believe that people are good drivers and can win with an inferior car,

That's not how you started this discussion. You came in here talking about how you ram your opponents and such. You made it sound as if it's impossible to drive cleanly in an inferior car. Now that several of us are basically disproving your argument, all a sudden you're backpedaling and saying you believe it IS possible if the driver is "good". Guess what, you've stepped into a forum full of "good" drivers.

but the possiblity to do so would have to be judged case by case (what track, what car against what cars e t c).

Which car? > Which race? > How much power? > What sort of tuning? Let's have some facts, and we'll honestly try and assist you with our opinions.

It all depends on the meaning of inferior... The AI sucks, also. If we say inferior on every aspect (cornering, braking, acceleration, etc.), it's still possible to win. Put the same driver with two different cars, one inferior than the other one, and you will see it isn't that easy to beat the superior's times. Impossible, I would dare to say.

I was gonna say:

If I were to put myself in just about any sim car, with its far-greater power advantage, and the Ai were to switch places with me and drive one of "my" cars (with meager tuning attempts in place but less power), I would certainly blow the Ai away every time...no doubt about it, while the Ai driver would flounder far behind in 6th place. :)

Therefore, it's really about the skill level of the driver (the human driver, that is). Is it more skillful to drive cleanly in an inferior car, or is it more skillful to simply bash your way thru as Altidxx seems so proud to do?

Still waiting for him (or her?) to reply about which car was being driven during which race, as mentioned a few posts above.

There's an incentive to actually drive dirty in the Suzuki Concepts Race - at Tsukuba, I had to ram those GSX-R/4s, and I had to hope that I'd only face 2 or 3 GSX-R/4s, and that they'd be far down the grid.

What car were you actually driving? If you were driving the Swift concept (can't remember what it's actually called) then it'll be difficult unless you tune the car a little. In another GSX-R/4 though you shouldn't have to ram the other cars out of the way at all.

Well, you win the GSX from the Concepts series, so you're forced to use the S2 (Swift lookalike) to win it in the first place. If you're a good driver, you can absolutely win the race cleanly, but you do have to tune the car to make up for the shortcomings of its FF drivetrain.

Ah, the S2, that was it.

You've mentioned what I was getting at then, you do need to tune the S2 a bit but it's perfectly possible to win the race cleanly once you do. And there's no shame in tuning something if it's clearly not competitive otherwise.

Exactly. The Suzuki Concepts race is definitely one of the series that forces you to think a little bit about how to win. Most races can be won by just taking the best eligible car and either leaving it stock or slapping on a Stage 2 turbo to make winning easy. The programmers weren't stupid enough to make winning every one-make race that simple, though, as evidenced by the 206 and Speedster races in addition to this.

Save the clean driving for online play where people get pissed off if you bump them. I always bump the AI cars, they will wind up ramming me anyways.

For some races its easier just to nail the guy in front of you on the last turn rather than playing honest and risk getting 2nd place.

I'm assuming what now? You were the one posting a link about tuning to win. I responded to that.

I started my posting in this topic writing that, in this game, I rather bump (which is ugly driving) and win than redoing the same race over and over just to be able to say that I won cleanly. You then replied that I might master your great skills eventually ("get it eventually").

I'll get back to you with what race and what car and then I'd like to see you win that race without touching AI. If you do I'll bow to your awsomeness. If you don't then I suggest you in the future reconsider telling other gamers to "get it" as if they are goofs not sharing your perspective and also reconsider how highly you think of your own skills.
