The draw for the first group stage was made yesterday

GROUP A:
Liverpool, Porto, Olympique Marseille, Besiktas

GROUP B:
Chelsea, Valencia, Schalke 04, Rosenborg

GROUP C:
Real Madrid, Werder Bremen, Lazio, Olympiakos

GROUP D:
AC Milan, Benfica, Celtic, Shakhtar Donetsk

GROUP E:
Barcelona, Olympique Lyon, VfB Stuttgart, Rangers

GROUP F:
Manchester United, AS Roma, Sporting Lisbon, Dynamo Kiev

GROUP G:
Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow, Fenerbahce

GROUP H:
Arsenal, Sevilla or AEK Athens, Steaua Bucharest, Slavia Prague

Sevilla vs AEK Athens was postponed due to the death of Sevilla's Antonio Puerta. Match to be played on Monday night, with Sevilla 2-0 up from the first leg

I can see all of the British clubs making it into the top 2 of their group and progressing to the next stage, with the possible exception of Rangers. Barcelona and Lyon will be tough for them to beat.

Valencia, I see. Hope it's not as nerve-racking as the last time we met in the Champion's League.

I'm sure Roma would be hoping not to let in 8 goals on aggregate, too.

Liverpool and Chelsea both drew, here's hopin Man U start their season tomorrow and get into gear with a good performance and a win.

Anyone catch the Real game?

Looked like the Dutch national team playing last 10 minutes. :sly:

A good win for Man U, we're still not firing but 3 points away to Sporting is a good start. I think we're improving each game though, we showed more hints of the fast flowing football we're best at in the second half than we have so far this season but we're still not playing nearly as well as Arsenal.

Another Man U match, andother 1-0 win. A good win though, Roma pressed us hard and they messed up some very good chances. Ronaldo scored a great goal back heeling the ball, sadly he was just offside when he made his run. Rooney scored a great goal to get his seasons tally off the mark.

Our defence was shakey, though we really only had 3 defenders on the pitch, John O'Shea is not the best when it comes to defence. He can fill in there, but he doesn't fill in there all that well. Ferdinand was brilliant, Tevez looked good, and for the short period of time he was on the pitch, Anderson looked much sharper than he has so far.

If you squint slightly, he looks really old and wrinkled!

Celtic 2 AC Milan 1

Who'd ah thunk it?
Flabbergasted, but a great week for Scottish football - if not for Celtic football fans... I really hope that Celtic are not robbed of their points. The commentators on Radio Five Live after the game suggested that if Celtic do forfeit the match, the fan will (in all seriousness) probably have to leave the country...

On another note...

These Spot The Ball contests are getting easier every week...

First time I've seen the actual footage and I'm absolutely appalled at the behaviour of Dida... there's no excuse for the fan and he deserves all the punishment(s) coming to him, but Dida is supposed to be a professional footballer and going down like that is utterly, totally unprofessional and despicable in my view...

It is blatantly obvious what he's trying to do - he knows full well that unless he reacts and makes it obvious that something happened, then it may well have gone unnoticed and whatever punishment meted out to Celtic FC would probably have been minimal - but he's deliberately making a meal out of it because he knows full well that a goalkeeper being stretchered off will look like to UEFA, and in my view he's trying to make the most of the situation and possibly stealing the points for the tie...

Shame on that idiot supporter for putting Celtic in this horrible situation and for wrecking their best night in European football in many years, but shame too on Dida for being an utterly pathetic opportunist. Celtic FC will be punished for not controlling one of their fans and guaranteeing the safety of the traveling players, but Milan should be censured for one of their players blatantly cheating... there is no other word for that sort of simulation - it's cheating, pure and simple. 👎:grumpy:

That was no Celtic fan, that was Pei Mei demonstrating the 'Five Finger Exploding Heart Technique'. Watch it closely, that 5th step is a doozy

Spec....

Ha ha..... Dida has been banned for two matches for being an utter donkey! And Celtic were fined, but only £25,000, and I don't think any further penalty i.e. points lost or play games behind closed doors, have been issued...

Great to see UEFA acting sensibly here - punishing Celtic proportionately, and coming down hard on cheats... 👍

Rangers drew 0-0 against Barca, Arsenal hit a staggering 7 passed Sparta though looking at the highlights Sparta looked incredibly poor. Still, 7-0, very good result.

Man U played impressively in the first half against Kiev (not the Chicken kind), going into the break 3-1 ahead. The second half was less impressive, we went down a couple of gears, gave the midfield away posession wise and looked too relaxed. Fletcher was rubbish in the second half and Giggs gave the ball away too much. I was very impressed with Anderson tonight, he played well over the weekend and he played well tonight so hopefully he's going to keep improving on a consistant basis until he's playing like he did tonight, against teams comparable to good Premiership opposition.

I can't believe I missed this story! its commical, to say the least. I am glad justice has been done, and I am glad that was handled proffesionally by the people in charge, you just know, if this was formula 1, the FIA would have banned celtic, and finned dider quater of a million. As for the result, which I unfotuneatly missed given this is over a week ago. I must say I am impressed with the result.

The ban has been reduced to 1 day after an appeal by Dida.

A new record has been set, Liverpool have thrashed Besiktas 8-0, the biggest winning margin in the Champions league to date. To be fair though, the game was more of a training session for Liverpool, run around the obsticles and shoot. Very poor performance from Besiktas. Liverpool still deserve credit ofcourse, they scored 8 goals. But Besiktas we're incredibly poor.

How did he 'appeal'? He probably collapsed at the hearing and rolled around the floor for 3 minutes when they announced the two match ban..

A strange game last night... Besiktas just stopped playing altogether, and Liverpool were more than happy to hammer them. It's always a shame when a team just give up like that. Let's hope that Liverpool can carry on the momentum and get a result against Porto, which promises to be a much stiffer test.

When I said the ban had been reduced to 1 day I meant 1 game, just to claify. I don't know the details but there was a small snippet in a paper about the appeal and the ban being reduced. Yeah Porto will be a much bigger test. Man U 4-0, could have been more. Comfotable win, Dynamo wern't a threat at all today.

Sorry to revive this thread before the champions' league again but...

How come Rocchi's goal in the game between Lazio and Werder Bremen counted as a penalty even though he didn't score from the spot? unforentry, I can't find good video on Youtube anymore, but here's the Wikipedia page if you don't believe me:

Stunning.

An absoulte master class from Arsenal.

I was getting really worried that they were playing SO well but not scoring.

We ran Milan Ragged. Best game I have watched in a really long time.

That wasn't what was expected.

I was watching Man U play Lyon, ITV1 went to Milan just at the right moment. Theo Walcott used his pace and showed some desire to win that ball even though all he needed to do was run down the clock. Good cross too.

Fantastic for English football with both United and Arsenal to both win.

We never needed to try that hard at Old Trafford, Lyon had very few moments where they put pressure on us and we never needed to step into a high gear. As for Arsenal, they played great. Missed a hell of a lot of chances though, but they played great and deserved to go through especially after Walcotts move to set up the second.

After the Man U game they asked Fergie what he thought of an all English quarter final, Man U v Arsenal perhaps, he grinned like he wanted it. Much like Arsenal we deserved to go through, unlike Arsenal we didn't need to play at a high level to do it since Lyon played behind the ball most of the game. Why would they do that when they needed to win is beyond me, but they di, and they lostd. If both teams played like they're capable of it would be a hell of a game much like this season is one hell of a season. Very close, very competeive, very entertaining.
