Yes, Suzuka East, West, and reverse are all technically the same course, but with different layouts (excluding east and west which requires just a bit of barrier reconfiguration).
So I would count all of those as 1 course, not 1 location.

Here is my 2 cents for the discussion.
Suzuka is a unique track.
Suzuka East is a configuration/layout of that track.
Any course in reverse is not another layout or config. It is simply the car pointed the opposite way. 💡
By the way, you guys probably already know this, but Suzuka won't be in reverse anyway.

Famine, I thought I could hear you concentrating on your enunciation - I do the same when forced to give presentations (I also hate how I sound "on tape").
Still, it might have been just as entertaining in full South-Yorkshire drawl
Also, I don't think there is a Suzuka reverse. Not many (if any, of the non-PD designed) real-life circuits have reverse versions!

I'm going to count reverse for each track as a course variation, so I'll be expecting somewhere > 35 & < 40 default tracks to drive which includes short and different variations of large circuits in the same way we have Suzuka, East & West = 3 tracks. Adding the reverse versions of those 35 - 40 tracks would take us to over 70 variations.
When I think about what we've seen to-date and the fact that PD are clearly way behind where they would probably have hoped to be - with most of their time most likely having been spent making 200 premium cars, this is what makes sense to me (and that's fine).

No need for that. Famine's explanation of what KY told him gives a strong indication that they are counting tracks just like they did with GT PSP.
It's a good sign, because GT PSP had most of GT4 tracks and the count was 45, then the variations to get to 72.
If GT5 starts with 70, with the reverses it will go above 100.

So if we take all the tracks from GTPSP, add them to the tracks in Prologue and then add those to all the new tracks that have so far been confirmed how much does that up to?

Exactly where could they put it that would allow that view? It worked on the Ferrari because of the Camera pod, but I dont see any way they could on the Zonda as that intake partrudes in a rather funky way from the rear bonnet over the roof.

What you've said here is actually funny because I've got GT PSP in front of me right now and I count 45 tracks total (including variations = short / east / west / road / old). I've checked and not all of these tracks have a reverse (backward) layout and I can't be bothered to count those, however *including reverse* a total of 70 - 80 tracks or so would be about right.
As I said, I don't see it being difficult to believe that we'll get 35 - 40 default tracks (including short / east / west / road / old versions) and the total number of variations (i.e. the 70+ touted by KY) would include the reverse versions for those.

I don't think we'll see all of these tracks in GT5 but then we know there are alternatives in GT5 such as London, Madrid & Eiger. I think that quite simply, we'll see some more variations of the tracks we've seen already. For example: Indy & Daytona have at least 2. Suzy I hope will have all 3 variations, Nordschleife also has GP, etc... I think if someone were to take all the tracks we'd seen so far in the demos, then threw in a couple of variations on some of these, we'd be almost there. Don't get me wrong, I do think there's a few reveals left in as far as famous circuits go (which may have another variation or two as well) and with the High Fens "Course Maker" theme being available I am hoping (expecting?) to see Spa on release day if not before.

Personally I believe that most, if not all, GTPSP/GT4 tracks will appear in GT5.
There are too many of them that can't NOT appear in GT5 (with the exception of GT4 tracks George V Paris and Hong Kong that were possibly the worst in the game - they weren't in GTPSP after all).
The confirmed GT5 tracks and GTPSP (+GT4) together make about 45 unique tracks.
Including all unique variations, that makes around 70 layouts.
Counting in reverse versions too, that's around 110 variations.
Even if we take out some GTPSP tracks, there still is room for additions from NASCAR (very likely, as 2 ovals are too few) and WRC and probably a couple of completely new or returning (from old games) original tracks that we haven't seen yet.
So in the end, in my opinion:
~45 tracks, ~70 unique layouts (courses) - What will be most likely included in the game
~70 tracks + variations - unlikely, but would be great
~?? tracks + 70 unique variations of them - would result in an enormous amount of tracks, I can't see this happen

Nice thoughts, but I don't think so. You can't take GT4 and GT PSP (a less elaborate port) as an indicator of the tracks that will be in GT5 (a new platform built in HD).
Keep in mind that it takes PD 6 months to map and build a new premium car and there are 200(+) of those (lots of time eaten here). Keep in mind that PD has had to convert another 800 cars from GT4 for use in GT5. Keep in mind that it takes PD 2 years to map and build a new circuit and there are several of these (Daytona, Indy, London, Madrid, Nurb-GP). It's probably easier to do this than it is to completely rebuild fictional tracks which never had any real texture or landscape.

You can't have 70+ unique variations from 20-25 tracks (around 20 is the number currently confirmed from videos and screenshots).
They have to come from somewhere, and from mostly GT4/PSP tracks seems the most plausible answer to me.
Upscaling PS2-level, but still visually good tracks to GT5 specs, maybe by making them "Standard" tracks (opposed to "Premium" ones specifically made for GT5) doesn't seem such a time consuming job to me anyway.

What you call a "unique track" is really "a location". KY has said there are 20+ locations in GT5. GT PSP has 32 locations (some fictional) as per below which makes for 70-80 variations (including reverse).

As we know GT5 has 20 locations and these include new places like London and Madrid, many locations in GT PSP would need to be dropped. Of the 32 locations in GT PSP, how many fictional ones do we know will be in GT5? As far as we actually know - it's just the High Speed Ring. It's my bet that the majority of the fictional locations are being dropped & replaced by new, real locations. For circuits like Fuji, there's no reason PD wouldn't have gone back to capture new data and upscale / improve the layout over GT4 in GT5.
For all of these (8 - seen to 10 - incl.not seen but oft.rumoured locations) there are several "tracks" and if you also include the reverse for most of those, then you'll have nearly twice as many "variations".

Have a look at 34:32, the AI car has the bonnet popped up to, but off course it doesn't suffer from vision problems

Where do you guys get these numbers from? I have the GT4 guide and according to it, GT4 has 38 unique tracks (excluding reverses and short/east etc.) and a total of 83 variations. 70 variations from 20 tracks doesn't make any sense.

In that video, the hood goes back down(unlike in the video I linked to) and we do not get to see what the player sees in cockpit view. So this video does not answer my question.

The video you posted was a replay, and was driven like that, by a human player, so what you see is what you'll get. You won't see anything with the bonnet up.
