You might be out of luck with your PS2 there :(
I had to find a replacement after the lens gave up last year, and SVX I believe had to do the same more recently.

If you do get it running and would like some extra funds for upgrades I'm happy to let you have up to 6,500cr from my Shelby GT350 funds. I'd recommend spending it on tyres... 💡

Ok, so I've been battling with the PS2 (& DFP for that matter) for a while now. I was determined to finish my 1st Of June Society quest for a perfect A-spec GT4 game, and have been used to taking the PS2 apart, cleaning the lens and realigning the laser on an almost weekly basis. Oh well. It's 10 years old and has seen a lot of use!! I had to dismantle my DFP in order to desolder the broken tact-switch on the upshift paddle and solder a new one in it's place before I could complete my final race for that quest too!
All in all it's a temperamental old beast, but I find it works far better if it's left on more-or-less permanently, as it stays warm and is more likely to read the disk than if it's left off and cool, whereupon it refuses to read anything properly for hours (kind of like a teenage kid!!)

Anyway, I was able to get it running tonight, hop in my DOME ZERO '78 which was left in stock configuration with 7.6 miles on the clock.
I gave it a 50Cr oil change and fitted 1200Cr 3D Type BS wing.
Drops my budget from 4050Cr - 1250Cr to 2800Cr remaining.

I ran 3 races at Suzuka West, got progressively quicker, but ruined 2nd race with an AI touch. Race 3 will be submitted, and I guess I'll then know what sort of challenge lays ahead of me. :nervous:

Leading up to UKGTP13 my PS2 had the screws permanantly removed allowing me to get in and adjust the lens in seconds. It too was old and had had a hard life, but was behaving opposite to yours. It would usually work when cold but stop reading the disk after about 10-15 minutes. I'd then have to let it cool down for 60-90 minutes before it would work again. A few months later my nephew sold me his PS2 after switching sides and buying an Xbox360.

So you don't want my money for tyres then? Then wing is a reasonable alternative for much less money as is weight reduction, and I forgot about the instant 5% power boost from an oil change.

If you don't take my money I may be able treat myself to a supercharger for next week - depending on the roll of the dice.

Stock vs stock your car should be lower-mid pack, but everyone else has had the time and funds to upgrade. The challenge may be more difficult than you expect, especially if you are writing off any race where the AI gives you a gentle tap. I go by the rule that if it's acceptable in Touring cars, then its acceptable from the AI.

Not too happy with the way my Mazda and Cougar are performing, so I went and did a little bit of re-tuning. Come to find out out I never adjusted the suspension I bought for the Cougar! >_<

So with some ballast and downforce adjustments, I am now much happier with the cars. Seeing as my times have already been subbed for Suzuka, I won't start seeing results until SSR5.

I know that one. I recall buying a wing and forgetting to adjust it for a couple of rounds. 0/0 downforce is just as useless as no downforce.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to continue as I am for now, it's my penance for joining late, and I don't seriously expect to win, but I'll get a feel for the competition around at the moment when it comes to future seasons of this, Sunday Cup and Top Gear Comparo. 👍
I clarified the regulations with BH-21 so I'm clear that the odd bump here and there will have to be acceptable if we're only allowed 3 attempts at a race, and given that GT4 AI are essentially blind, drunk, 4ft-tall, 90-year olds, and thus at some points unavoidable! We're just not allowed to go AI bashing for an advantage. Not that I'd ever do that anyway.

I like the Touring Cars analogy! 👍

Once I know how I stack up I may come grovelling back for a loan! (As long as you promise not to break my knees if I can't pay it back immediately!!! :P)

Woo, racing tyres for the win.

Half of me wants to spend the prize money making my cars handle better, the other half wants to leave them as they are and give everyone else a chance. Maybe I'll do a bit of both...

Sod it. I'll sponsor a new entry in any class by offering 75% of my funds as an incentive.

I'm probably being a little slow on the uptake here, but my finances seem to be 650Cr ahead of where I thought they'd be. :D

I got 2000Cr starting money, 250Cr base + 6 x 300Cr for weekly roll to give 4050Cr to begin the final round at Suzuka West.
I spent 1200Cr on a wing and 50Cr on an oil change to leave me 2800Cr before the results of Week 4.
I get 6 x 300Cr for 6 points in Class D, and another weekly roll of 6 (2050Cr) to add to my total giving 6650Cr, but I'm listed as having 7300Cr.
Are there additional prizemonies for podium placements and I missed that bit?

Can anyone explain where I've gone wrong here, so I know what I can spend legitimately before I start this week's races without the Bank Manager sending the Bailiffs round? :scared:

Well, I missed your Oil Change for one. You also got 6 x 400 Cr for your points on the track as that length of track pays better as in its in the long class of tracks, wait till we hit the first grand class track.
You get a base weekly outside income of 250 Cr that the random roll is added to. This will change throughout the season as it will for Week 6.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for explaining, I blame the volatility of Wall Street personally! No-one knows what's going on!!!
I grew up in the days of Monopoly. "Bank Error in your favour" card was only ever worth 15Cr in those days, 650Cr just seemed too good to be true, even with current inflation!!!! :P

*EDIT* It is with great sadness that I report the death of an old friend tonight. SCPH-30001, Serial U4194917 has passed on after a long battle with GT4-itis. Try as I might, no amount of coaxing, cajoling, fettling or repairing could bring it back and it has gone forever more to the throngs of Disk Read Erroring PS2s in Silicon Heaven after 10 years of faithful service and abuse and taken it's final chequered flag.

Adios old buddy.

I can't imagine leaving GT4 alone though, even if I do finally progress to GT5, and a replacement PS2 will be sought tomorrow to allow me to carry on racing here. Refurbs are only $50 - 60 at GameStop, so I'll have a mosey over there on my way back from work tomorrow.

Well, I bank errored on your account twice yesterday evening Smallhorses. I'm going to blame my sinsus, well, because I can.

Quietly slinks off for some remedial math and keeping the columns straight. That or stop doing math in the evening where my success ratio is rather low.

Sorry to hear of your loss, you can send it to that big scrap heap in the sky. It served you well, or at least faithfully. Pat it on the disk cover and send it on its way.

More confirmation that it was a bad night for math, I'm sorry Flynn. Its fixed.

Flynn's 427 S/C: 10500cr for R2 tires (never should've bought them S3's)

BH, Anderson's donation should've brought me up to 10500, not down to 9600. ;)

A) I suddenly found the little Fiat going over 90mph when a Nissan Micra rammed my rear engined car from behind! Whilst repairing the damage I found that the stock gearbox was ready to collapse so was forced to buy that Full Custom Gearbox for 10,000cr sooner rather than later. +3 clicks on the Autoset and it can now exceed 90mph under it's own power, but I'm still bouncing off the limiter! Must remember to give it another couple of clicks for the next track.
B) I removed half of the ballast weight from the Civic and it felt a little more responsive without affecting the handling too much. I think I can put up with its quirky handling for the rest of this week.
C) After spinning on the first attempt I decided that there was no point fighting it any more and got rid of the ballast weight replacing it with an adjustable wing for 1,200cr. The result was an instant 10 second improvement, though much of that was probably due to the spin on the first try.
D) Resisting the urge to modify my Mustang I went straight to the track and was presented with a grid full of Skyline GT-Rs. Imagine my surprise when I found I had passed them all within half a lap despite my troubles putting the power down.
E) If there is one car that cannot be driven cleanly at ten tenths then this is is. As usual I had to settle for three scruffy races knowing that I could have been so much quicker if only a wing could be fitted.

My parts for Special Stage Route 5.

Alright. Hopefully this'll be my last embarrassingly n00b-ish question here. :dunce:
Do we run all 3 race tracks and submit times together and get rewarded on the basis of results of all 3, or do we submit them individually, get prizemoney after each track that we can use to upgrade the car before progressing to the next track?

I'm figuring we run all 3 tracks with the same mod-level and use the budget gained from the 3 different races during the race "week" to modify before the next race "week", etc. Right? Just want to be sure, sorry. :guilty:

Good question. The answer is either way, really. I started out by subbing all tracks together, but once the money started coming in, I do one track at a time so I can immediately sink the winnings into upgrades. :)

BH, thanks a million, bud. :D

So are there separate deadlines for each of the 3 tracks within a race "week" and 3 postings of results?
Things are becoming clearer.

4 day "soft" deadline for each, with a 2 day padding at the end, for a total of 14 days. However, if one fails to submit any times for a track when all others have subbed all of theirs, the guilty will receive a dreaded "DNF".

Smallhorses if you look at the very first post there is a graphic representation of how a racing period will likely go. It can go faster of course depending on driver submissions, but at a maximum of two weeks for 3 tracks.

P.S. If you want to be able to react on a track by track basis submit one track at a time and wait for the results. If you don't mind doing all three then getting the results, then submit all three. Time management is a drivers issue within the frame work I have set up.

What Flynn said, but the dreaded DNF happens if you don't submit a single track time if everyone else has theirs in, then we move on. If you have submitted a track time even for one class, we run the clock out till everyone is in.
