The GT4 Weekly Arcade Time Trial Challenge
gran-turismo-4.jpg

It’s time for some GT4 time trial action.

I’ve wanted to start a time trial series for a while, and even though Viperin has just started the Lotus Elan Tournament, I’ll announce this one as well.

Using the database I’ve just made with all the cars available from the beginning in arcade mode, and adding the prize car list* to it, I’ve got a list of cars that everyone should have, (or be able to get very easily) in Arcade Mode as a set of cars to choose from.
* Only bronze license cars, and prize cars from race series that take 4 hours or less are part of the car pool.

- The competition will be a weekly time trial challenge run in GT4 Arcade Mode, there will be a primary car to drive, and then a bonus challenge in a second car which will be optional.

- Complete as many laps as you wish, but your submitted times must be consistent with the standard OLR rules. (Section 16 in particular) You should also save your ghost replays, should any verification be required.

- Here’s how it works, post your best time in this thread, which you can improve (just edit your first post for that week) as many times as you wish.
The second optional part will be a time trial in a related car on the same track, where you will have to be within a certain amount of time of your primary car lap time. If you can do this you will get a time bonus.

- No sign up is required for this; you can come and go as you wish.

Depending on how things go I may open this up to the public to come up with suggestions for car/track combo’s, but you’re stuck with mine for at least the first few weeks.

EDIT: It appears some participants are getting confused about which tyres to use for some of the rounds, hence I will try to remember to use the GT4; GT Mode: Car Parts Purchase Menu tyre designations, as they are the same across both platforms, which are as follows;
N1 Standard:Economy
N2 Standard:Comfort
N3 Standard:Road
S1 Sports:Hard
S2 Sports:Medium
S3 Sports:Soft
R1 Racing:Super Hard
R2 Racing:Hard
R3 Racing:Medium
R4 Racing:Soft
R5 Racing:Super Soft
DT Dirt
SN Snow
Hopefully this will solve this issue.

GT4 Weekly Arcade Time Trial Challenge: Week 1
gran-turismo-4.jpg

The first week’s challenge for this competition is;

20ish year old supercars.
The supercars of today ‘coddle’ drivers by having just as much power as they do cutting edge technology. On the other hand the older generation of supercars have the power, but are not necessarily the easiest cars to drive quickly. So with that said, let’s see how you go driving these two supercars from twenty(ish) years ago. Both these cars are fast, but also unforgiving, which when coupled with the undulating El Capitan Reverse circuit should make for a challenging 1st week of competition.

Track: El Capitan Reverse

Primary Car: Cizeta V16T ’94
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: S2 (Sports Medium)
Quicktune: None (Stock)

Optional Bonus Car: RUF BTR ’86
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: S2 (Sports Medium)
Quicktune: None (Stock)
Optional bonus Car Time: Get within 2 seconds of your final Submitted Cizeta V16T '94 lap time in the RUF BTR ‘86 to receive a 1 second time bonus.

My Times (so Far)
Cizeta V16T ’94 - 1:50.935
RUF BTR ’86 – 1:52.897

EDIT: Some last minute house keeping. These are the specs the cars should have on the track menu screen just before you start driving;
Cizeta V16T '94: HP-580 KG-1640 Tyres-SM
RUF BTR '86: HP-370 KG-1180 Tyres-SM

You have 1 week to post your best time(s) in this thread (you can edit/improve them if you wish). All other rules are as per post No1.

Good Luck.

Sounds very good, I will give it a go.
Especially as I really like the Ruf BTR :)
Would it be okay to make up a casual team with my mate oldmodelt ?

Seeing that I'm holding off on getting FM4, i'll try to get in on this one in too.

I hadn't set this competition up for teams, and I'd rather keep things on an individual basis, even if just to make admining easier. As stated in post one, either of you can come and go as you please, but you'll be competing individually.

Forgive my newness, but can you please tell me (or direct me to the thread on) how to get/find a Cizeta in Arcade mode? It does not appear in the Italian line up.

(I've never spent any time in Arcade Mode)

Looking forward to it.

As per prize car list in the opening post, you obtain the Cizeta by winning the Supercar festival in the professional hall.

Winning/buying cars in GT Mode also makes them available in Arcade mode.

Arcade is where all the fun is/was. :)

Hehe, I think you need to have some "fun" in GT Mode first. The start up car list for arcade* while pretty long at 240 cars, does include an awful lot of "less exciting/slow cars from Japan." If you've got your 100% GT mode game completion (and hence unlocked everything), then yes arcade is "fun" aswell.
That said theres not much in Arcade you can't do in GT Mode. Arcades advantage as far as I can tell, is being able to create races with a customizable number of laps, and the ability to control the AI's tyre choice.

* Shameless self promotion.

Thanks this is the piece I needed.

I've been playing my "C" game for the last couple weeks (I have 3 memory cards going). I have that car in my "A" game (I'm about 80% through that one)

Off I go!

I have my times.

Cizeta V16T '94 - 1:53.005
RUF BTR '86 - 1'55.355

EDIT: My apologies folks. I accidentally copied down my times incorrectly on a sheet of paper. But, the times above are the correct results. This mistake was not for the higher chance of winning, it was because I had made an error in copying my results.

We're not. I'm only marginally better so far.
Maybe I'll give it another go tonight. It can only serve to improve my skills after all. It's just that if it stops being fun, i stop. I've got enough things that feel like work already.
👍

Hello everyone. Glad to see that there's still some GT4 activity on here.
I likely won't be able to participate every week because of business travel, but figured I'd give this round a go...

Cizeta V16T '94: 1'51.193
RUF BTR '86: 1'56.571 (Not even close. :indiff:)

Challenging combo to start the series with! 👍

Cizeta V16T '94 Time: 1'57.672 :ouch:

RUF BTR '86 Time: 2'00.389 :grumpy:

Seems like I can't drive on ice either. I did, however, find the RUF to be far more enjoyable to drive than the Cizeta, perhaps because with the Cizeta almost all that I did was slow down for corners, and slide all over the road.
I agree, a very challenging first car/track combo!

The best advice I can give for driving the Cizeta is; brake, brake and then brake some more. Seriously, get it slowed down more than you think you need to (its a 1640KG car on S2's so it doesn't turn all that well), this means you can then put the 580HP its got, to use as early as possible.

One of the aims of this comp is to drive cars you all have in your garage, which you should at least drive once.
And the Cizeta has got quite a few votes for the worst car in GT4 thread, so I thought using it might show that it does have some redeeming qualities. It's certainly tough to drive quickly, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

Well said! 👍
The problem with GT4 is often that it's far too easy to get into a race car with incredibly (overly so in GT4) sticky tyres and brakes that would essentially detach your retinas if they were that capable in real-life. Then people get back in a car like the Cizeta that does kind of represent what over a tonne-and-a-half of 580HP supercar on road legal tyres would actually respond like. Sure, it'll do almost 160mph before you hit turn 1, but it's not going to stop like an F1 on slicks or an F-15 on an aircraft carrier with a catch line.

So far I've managed to wrestle a best of 1'49.753 out of the unwieldy Italian beast and I'm working on getting within 2s of that in the much more friendly RUF. I'm exactly 0.101s outside that goal right now, but I can see where it's going wrong and I will crack it with a little more effort (frustrating effort!) tomorrow. :D

G'Day mate.

Sorry I could not get a time or two for you. Suddenly had lots to do and ran out of time.
I like the concept though and should find enough time for round 2.
Well done 👍

I didn't post an exact, submit due time (I'll try to do that for round 2) but the 7 days will be up in around 34 hours from the time of this post. This is when I'll post the results and announce round 2.

I'll (try to remember to) post a 6 hour warning for the close of round 1 at the appropriate time tomorrow.

Ok, my final times are in:

Cizeta V16T '94: 1'49.753
RUF BTR '86: 1'51.560

Replays saved, analysed and available upon request (NTSC only.)

Ok here are the results for week1.

GT4 Weekly Arcade Time Trial Challenge: Week 2
gran-turismo-4.jpg

This week’s challenge is;

The BMW M3.
The BMW M3 is one of the finest sport cars you can purchase, it has an excellent balance of speed and handling.
So lets see how you fare in BMW's top of the line M3 road and race models.
This weeks circuit is Midfield raceway, being run in the reverse direction (Because I haven't driven it in reverse very often).

Track: Midfield Reverse
EDIT: It's worth adding that I don't consider the paved section on the left in the first tunnel to be part of the circuit. So at least 2 wheels on circuit proper at all times. That goes for the other paved sections on the right and left for the other tunnel section as well.

Primary Car: BMW M3 GTR ’03
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: S2 (Sports Medium)
Quicktune: None (Stock)

Optional Bonus Car: BMW M3 GTR Race Car ’01
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: R2 (Race Hard)
Quicktune: None (Stock)
Optional bonus Car Time: Beat your road car time by 9 seconds to receive a 1.5 second time bonus.

My Times (so Far)
BMW M3 GTR '03 - 1:20.541 EDIT: 1:19.789
BMW M3 GTR Race Car '01 – 1:09.832

These are the specs the cars should have on the track menu screen just before you start driving;
BMW M3 GTR '03: HP-375 KG-1350 Tyres-SM
BMW M3 GTR Race Car '01: HP-444 KG-1120 Tyres-RH

You have until Tuesday 15th November 2011 1:00 PM GMT to post your best time(s) in this thread (you can edit/improve them if you wish). All other rules are as per post No1.

Good Luck.
