Playstation 3 Slim - Confirmed

That photo looks like a distorted image of a regular PS3 I can't even see what the side looks like, is it curved or what?

It was discussed in the PS3 general discussion thread from memory.

Wouldn't exactly say Koller confirmed the PS3 Slim. No idea where that article got the date from as any other article I've seen has no date on it.

I think the date has more relation to TGS than an actual release date.

BSN usually has good resources and hasn't led me astray (as far as computers go) so, we'll see. 👍

The PS2 slims ran a little hot and some burnt out. I hope Sony don't have the same problem with these. Since I don't play PS1 or PS2 games on mine anymore, I'd give the one I have to my boys (oddly, one is not enough for them) and I'll get the new slim version with a new HDD. So, that would make 3 PS3 for the Lifters' family. :)

this talk doesn't help the community and only one to gain is Microsoft! Why? Because people who would be buying PS3s will shift to a wait and see approach!

Personally, after having seen the PS2 slim, I was more than happy to keep my fat boy. Sure, the slim had the network adapter built in, but then I'd lose the ability to load games off of my hard drive.*

I see absolutely no draw in a slimmer PS3 whatsoever, unless they jack up the specs on it and even then it's a stretch that I'd buy a new one when my current one works just fine.

*Is it wrong that my PS2 has double the capacity of my PS3?

Yeah, i had the fat PS2 and when the slim one came out it had absolutely no draw to me...

Plus, if that leaked picture that's been making the rounds for the last couple of weeks is indeed true - the slim PS3 looks completely rubbish :P

And yes, terribly wrong :) I really need a new hard-drive for my PS3 *sighs*

My out of warranty PS3 died, i waited to hear of news of a 'slim' console but thought it would be a long time before it would be confirmed and so i bought an 80GB Chunky PS3 like two days ago :ouch:

That Ars Technica interview was doen just after E3 where Sony had spent their show joking about PSP Go leaks. That statement can easily be just more comment about PSP Go.

John Koller has every reason in the world to get upset when talking about leaks as it likely his department that they are coming out of.

Simple question, looking for a simple answer - what is the big draw to a slim Playstation? Is it just because it's new? Surely it can't because it weighs less (how often do you move it anyway?) or takes up fewer cubic inches (if this is the issue, you need to find a new place to live)?

Please enlighten me, 'cause I certainly don't get it.

Slimmer models usually have come with price drops as well.

And new SKUs tend to come with new games/bundles. So, a bit of GT5 hope may also be included in this.

I also don't get how that article confirms the slim PS3, nor why the slim PS3 has a completely different font for "PS3" on the box.

Slim version of a console can have a fair few benefits
-new features
-improved performance
-more reliable
-more convenient to store (for those with limited space). This can even introduce people to in car use.
-lower power consumption

Which is irrelevant for people that already have one, of course. New game prospect still stands, though.

For the PS2, there was no way to connect a hard drive to it. I wouldn't call that a "feature".
-improved performance
-more reliable
Like decreased airflow, making it more prone to overheating?
This can even introduce people to in car use.
I'm not even going to start on this...

Sorry for the completely condescending attitude, but I'm incredibly surprised that there is that much need/want for a slim model.

Change the tittle. This is not "confirmed" it's just another quote taken to mean more than it probably does. I'm not saying the slim doesn't exist and the thread can't still be about this new tidbit (and it is only a tidbit) of info, but the tittle is wrong and will just cause confusion. As Yoda once said, confusion leads to anger, anger leads to flaming. something like that

Thank you.

There is only need/want among the fanboys that feel they can only justify their console decisions by winning the popularity contest that is sales.

I am also somewhat confused by the big deal made out about the new GPU. Laptop versions of the PC equivalent to the RSX have been out for half a decade now. Yeah, they will be cheaper, but how much smaller can they get?

Not much smaller, at least not with current generation technology, electron leakage is becoming a big problem at such a small scale and scientists are scratching their heads as to what new elements they can make their pretty little circuit boards out of that will allow any more die shrinkages.

Seems like 35nm will be the limit for a while, but we'll see...

Sure it will be cheaper, but there are other draws to smaller dies - aside from being able to pack more transistors into the same space for the newest and best - if you make a die shink then a comparable product created using the smaller process will use less electricity and will give off less heat.

To note, I just read that Intel has already started producing 32nm 6 core chips at several of their plants. And to think, my CPU is .13um in size.
