It seems there are alot of people not sure whether they should get shift or not.
I figured a overall 1-10 rating from GTP members would go a long way in helping them decide.

Voted 9 as well. Would have been an 8 yesterday, but I have the wheel straightened out. I also learned that crappy cars handle like crap, and good cars handle quite well (shocking, that). Anyway, I agree with 84SSccc, this game is a blast, and the physics model is actually really good. Great purchase.

What I had hoped Codemaster would have done with Grid.
Not quite a sim like Forza or GT, but in a right direction.

I gave it an 8 because the FFB could be stronger, the AI will ram you and run you off the track and access aggressive points to your profile, however I would of given it an 8.5.

This is a solid buy without a doubt, I'm enjoying NFSS so much I haven't put it down in that last 2 days.

its too slide happy but it ok so far for my 30min play lol. The front wheels drive handling is too drifty even at low speed :(.

8.5, but voted 8. The game I think was made by SMS, with the ideas of EA. Does not feel like an NFS at all to me. It's a brilliant gap filler for the wait until GT5.

5 - Great potential but annoying handling and AI ruined it for me. Played it for less than an hour before I was over it. Probably better for people with a wheel.

I'd give the game a 9, picked up a copy this afternoon and played it non-stop virtually. Handling takes a while to adjust to but when you get the hang of it it's a great challenge. Reward system is also very in depth.

From the limited time playing it I would give it an 8. Currently my only complaint is the menu's, they are at an angle which can be hard to read sometimes. Sure this looks cool but it gets hard to read.

On the plus side though it is very good, the handling feels great. I have spun out locking the breaks trying to avoid a car. I will have to play with the settings some more to get it to where I like it though. I would also like to point out the major gain when turning assists off, this will hopefully encourage more people to learn to drive without them.

+1 Voted 4. Taking it back today. It's not too bad I suppose but it's not my cup of tea.

I gave it a 9. Why ? Well first it's a great game, the physics feels great, the sounds are just awesome and the AI is pretty realist. (It makes some errors from time to time to spice up things). For the negative things: No 1080 HD so it looks bad on my TV and not a lot of cars. (I'm used to GT :D) I didn't try online yet but I'm looking forward to it. So to wrap this up, shift is a nice comeback for the NFS series and it feels the gap until GT5.👍

Disclaimer: I played the game with a DFP and I tuned a bit the steering wheel settings. It may feels different with a controller.

Haven't had enough time with it to rate, but my first impression is im very impressed, seems like NFS is back 👍
Will rate later, but for now I'd give it a 7 or 8 :D

Rated it 5. Good effort, and it felt pretty good in tier 1... but once I moved up a tier it pretty much went downhill. Where I'm at now (T2-3 transition) most stock or default-tuned cars feel same-ish (poor range on pedals, huge lift-off oversteer and mild understeer on power)... and I now see what people meant by "slot car handling". Try the R35 and R8 car battles for very good examples of this.

I won't be as harsh as I might want to as I've only played it with the miserable MS wheel and DriveFX (which had just as good feedback, but much better pedal precision)... but it seems like something is fundamentally wrong with how the cars handle.

No cars should oversteer that easily and that much just by easing off the throttle...
If I ended up face down in the graveltrap I'd blame myself for being a tool, but it's easily recovered just by accelerating - and actually looks like a part of the handling model. I eventually gave up trying to eliminate it and did a couple of laps rally style, ie slide up to the apex and floor it out without using brakes.. and I actually was just as quick doing that (used Spa for my fix-it/tuning runs), which left me feeling a bit cold.

After playing a few hours, still haven't test everything yet, but already found some flaws like best - time on Nürburgring online is around one (!) second?? Umm, ok...
Overall I'd give a 8,5 though as I really like the driving style ( physics ), technically ( framerate rock solid ) I found no issues.

Played with DS3 on experienced setting with exterior view and racing line off.

...

Yup definitely a 8-9 based on single-player only. SHIFT really has a good sense of speed, including a big fear factor with the higher powered cars. I personally think it feels a lot more realistic than GT5p, it somehow rather drive / plays like GT3, which was/ is the best SIM to date in my opinion. 👍

I guess I rather should post that on a NFS forum... :nervous:

Here's my impression of the game.

Graphics: It definately doesn't look as good as GT5P overall. Plus the FPS is only 30, so that requires some getting used to. The car in the menu screen doesn't look good, lots of anti-aliasing going on, and some textures on cars like tyres look very low-res. The game is also only in 720p which is dissapointing. The cockpit camera looks really good though, I use that one the most. I can't really race with it in GT5P but in this game I can. Rather weird... The replays don't look good, and when you're saving your progress after a race the cars in the replay dissapear/start flying. The tracks do look good however, while not as accurate as the GT series.

Gameplay: The racing is nice, but in the beginning the car feels very slow and weird, but I guess I'm used to it now. I won some races in hard difficulty. The expierience is more intense than in GT5P, and there are lots of things going on with the AI. They're better than in GT. Some dirty racing is sometimes needed to fend them off, which is fun, but it's not like in reality.
8

Sound: The sound is very nice, you really want to push the car to the limits and hear the enigne roar. The tire sounds are good too.
9

I race with the DFP. I have reasonable good settings now, and the dead zone is rather gone. But between races the wheel makes noises as it reconfigures or something. Very weird and disturbing.

I give it a high seven, so I vote 8. 7.8
My rating may change after I play it some more though.

My biggest problems are the bugs, and what seems to be a not very well thought out menu. There are a lot of little things that are irritating simply because I am use to GT quality, and this game is not of that quality.

I cant seem to have my controller on while playing single player either, that really gets to me.

I voted 6 out of 10. Sounds bad, but no game is a 10. GT5P is a 7 IMO and GT5 will be a 9.9. So, in those terms 6 seems very fair.

From everything I've read on the xbox forums, it seems like the xbox, and ps3 versions are 2 different games. Alot of 360 owners are complaining about the game, while the majority of people in here seem to like it. I believe it's the 360 wheels fault. It's actually pretty good with the g25. The pedal travel is pretty short, but that might be able to be fixed with some settings, which I haven't tried changing yet.

Another thing too:

I think people are judging Shift based on GT5P/Forza 2 standards, which is not realistic in my opinion, or fair for that matter. I would like to know how much time and money were spent to develop Shift vs. how much time and money have been spent to develop GT5 and Forza 3 respectively. I would guess that it has taken roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the money (probably less than that), and in the case of GT5, probably 1/4 of the time to develop.

When you judge this game from that perspective, as I do, NFS Shift is quite impressive I think. PD has tagged the GT series with the "Real Driving Simulator" moniker, so I hold their games to a much, much higher standard than I would NFS Shift. As far as I know, the Shift developers have made no such claim with their game. Nonetheless, they have managed to produce a very solid--yet arcadey--game with good physics, car models, great sounds, and very good graphics.

If I could have, I would have given this game an 8.5, but I couldn't so I gave it an 8. Judging from the poll results so far, if you average it out, it seems that is right about where this game is ending up in the votes--8 to 8.5.

Very good game, tons of fun, and it's not coming out of my BR drive for a good long while (unless GT5 somehow manages to be released within the next couple of months ;) )

Well, the game did cost more than GT5P (30% more actually) so if I go by price then this game is a 2, maybe a 1, lol.

But seriously, I think it is completlely fair to compare two games that are of the same genre but of different styles, not for quality or realism, but for ease of use/how user friendly they are. This is my problem with NFSS, it is like a maze. I got a message from my friend last night and he asked me how to play multiplayer... this is unacceptable!

If you have to read the entire manual just to figure out what the hell is going on then something is wrong. I remember putting GT5P in and thinking this is weird, but it was still real easy to navigate and figure out what needed to be done to get the ball rolling, one could say. The realism, looks, and feel, are not comparable between the 2 games.

On the other hand, they are both racing games and every racing game should have certain elements. NFSS has these elements, and it is fun to play. Those two things are extremely important, and they need to have those two things (racing elements and fun factor) to a point where you dont want to stop playing. NFSS has achieved this, IMO.

In conclusion, when price, fun factor, ease of use, and addictability are all brought into consideration it is a 6-7, I think.

For comparison-Lets say GT5 cost $80. It will most likely be easy to navigate, really fun(more cars and tracks than NFSS), and I am already addicted to it and its not out yet. I am guessing GT5 will get a 9 out of 10 from me.

p.s. Carl- I watched a documentary on Rabbit Hash Kentucky, If you havent seen it you need to look it up, It is awesome!!

If you want to compare it to any game GRID would probably be closest.

I've been thinking of getting this game and looking to see what it was like; this was pretty much the impression I was coming to.

Do people think it's worth trading in GRID for this, or are they much of a muchness? I particular I'd be interested in hearing about the following:

Handling - people are saying Shift is somewhere between Sim and Arcade, so I assume it's more realistic than GRID

AI - overall I like the AI in GRID - it's very aggressive and makes for exciting racing, but sometimes it's too aggressive, taking me out illegally at corners and not a hint of a flag or a penalty for them!

Damage - is it just cosmetic, or does it affect the car's performance and can the car be destroyed by too much damage?

Championship Mode - can you set up a good GP style championship mode in this game? In GRID the longest I can seem to get is a 5 x 2 lap race championship once you get to the world level. Can you set up a meatier campaign in this game?

Also, I hear tell there are a lot of bugs in this game - is this the case and are there any game breakers?

Nope you can't compare SHIFT with GRID, just no.

Don't know about damage and haven't really test online yet.

There are no bugs yet to see on PS3 version.

I have something bugging me tho... Anyone know if you can take your cars from career online ?
I tried, but didn't see the option to do so... heck that's what NFS's all about, no?
*scratches head*

When you get online there will be a set of options on the right-hand side of the screen in the race lobby. One of those options is car select, I believe.
Just enter that menu, and then move through the car options by pressing R1/L1. You should be able to choose from your cars, Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4 cars (depending on the tier you're on) loaner cars, and bonus/reward cars.

Of course, the type of car you will be allowed to choose is dependent on the type of race you have setup and the car limits/restrictions you have allowed.
If you are entering someone else's lobby, they may have restrictions on the type of cars allowed and that may be preventing you from selecting your own cars if they are too powerful 👍
